Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

Elevation Way did a great job professionally mounting my 65” TV on the wall with an articulating mount. He showed up on time, knew exactly what to do and got to work. The installation took less than an hour and was executed flawlessly for a very fair price.

I highly recommended Ryan and Ed from Paradise Systems. They did a professional job; reasonable prices; prompt and courteous. I had one TV mounted to the wall with articulating mount and installation of a one tier glass floating shelf. They installed 110 outlet and low trim kit and all wiring was concealed in wall. They ran into several situations which is not at all their fault, in-fact it was my old house electrical wiring and cable system provider and home builder. Ryan and his partner resolved all problems at hand perfectly. Ryan did not try to push anything that wasn't needed. The only thing I recommend is articulating mount with cable management system. This would provide no pinch to cable behind the mount. Anyway, the work came out great. Ryan went the extra mile to hide wires and cables and reviewed all equipment, I had.

I hired Markanthony to mount a 42" TV to the wall in our guest bedroom. We had previously had a friend try to install the mount but he was unable to do so, hence why we hired a professional. When I set the project up, Thumbtack wouldn't let me choose same day, but when I asked Markanthony when he gave me a quote he said he would be able to which was a huge plus for both me and my Fiance. He arrived when he said he would and text me ahead of time to let me know he was on his way. He was able to mount the TV in about 15 minutes and turns out our friend had missed the stud by about 1/4 inch. Nonetheless, we are very pleased with the look of our guest bedroom now that the TV is on the wall. We are already planning on using him in the future for a few other projects we have.

My job was a difficult one. There were some things that came up that Kevin Borrell would not have been able to see coming and I do not penalize him for that. However, there were several little things that just lead to me being a bit disappointed. The wire molding/cover was never installed (is still just sitting in the corner), one of the TV's is not centered (wrong mount was used) and I was told it would cost more to use the correct mount, and there is still tape on the wall (behind the TV's where it is difficult to reach). I think these three things would have lead to me being much happier. The original quote was $270 to install the three TV's. Between the second trip and some other up charges I ended up paying $370 (other pros were proposing more than $270 but less than $370). Kevin was a straight shooter for the most part. I just felt a little disappointed at the end.

Bill is absolutely phenomenal. He recognized immediately my mount wouldn’t work for my wall and he went out and got one at Wal Mart for me. Bill even went above and beyond and installed a ceiling fan for me. I can’t recommend Bill enough and will be sharing his info to all my buddies. He’s a stand up American guy and there is no one else I would have rather had install my TV. Ultimately if your not using Bills Video Design and living in Tampa you are wrong :)! Thanks Bill your the GOAT

Very disappointed with the quality of the job done. Initially asked the technicians for advice on the height of the TV. I ended up trusting their expertise but the TV ended up being WAY higher than what I expected. (I do understand this is a subjective issue). I really wanted hidden cables behind the wall. They barely attempted and quickly told me they were unable to do so and that my only option was the cable cover strip. I accepted trusting that they know best. I mean, I guess they do this on a daily basis After installing the cable cover strip I immediately pointed out that it was not straight. Technician acted surprised and pretended he was not seeing what I was seeing and then ended up telling me that the cable was creating so much tension it was causing that deviation. Because the TV was so high! Solution for this? they moved my Internet router to cover this. They obviously knew I was very disappointed with the end result. Did not offer to try to fix the problem; nor do I think I would've trusted that they attempted to do so. They were clearly in a rush to finish the job. SAME DAY ended up contacting some else who was EASILY able to mount my TV and hide the cables behind the wall without ANY issues. He, in fact, noted that my previous installation was incorrect and base wasn't even sturdy. Overall bad experience. Would not recommend
