Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

The photos took a while to arrive, but once they came, Jeremy and I were able to relive the memories of our special wedding day through those photos.

Alex did an awesome job with our wedding pictures. He was very responsive both before and after the event. He came on time at the event and worked well with my other vendors. And most of all, our wedding photos were beautiful!!! Thanks Alex!

Michelle and Bill were amazing. They did the photography for our wedding in March on a dinner boat. They were great to work with and the pictures were better than we could have hoped for. Michelle was quick to respond to messages and communicated with us. I would recommend them to friends and family and will definitely use them again.

Mr. Wallace shot my wedding and was wonderful. He was on time, patient and professional. He gives you the photos after the event is over on a flash drive and tells you to email the ones that you want edited. His assistant was amazing. She helped with the poses and props. I wish we'd taken more photos with different family members after the ceremony, but still got some great shots. I'd have a list of pictures you want before the event so it's more organized. Overall great job and great work!

We had a wedding at a specific time of our anniversery at a location that truly marked our relationship. It was as the sun came up, very early, and he came from St.Pete down to Tampa to meet us and take beatiful photos, and made the experiance enough for us to refer him to friends. He even got us a gift when he presented us with the finished professinal pictures!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I’m beyond thankful to have found Alex to take photos for our wedding. He was always fast with responding, the value for the work he puts in is beyond anything else you will find, and he was all around great to work with during the photo session. He arrived over 30 minutes early ( before I got there ), and was very patient the whole time while we waited for guests to arrived. He made us feel comfortable and it was a huge relief to have him take control while taking photos. I didn’t need to worry about whether or not certain things would be captured, I didn’t need to think about where to stand, or how. I highly recommend Alex to anyone who needs pictures taken. I will definitely be hiring him again in the future !

I hired him for my wedding, the beginning he was kind and attentive and always emailed or texted me back quick if I had any concerns, then the day of my wedding he was standing around for a good while and was trying to leave at 8:00 pm when he was scheduled and paid to leave at 10:00pm. After we told him he had to stay because that’s what we paid for he stayed he took lots of pictures and when it came time to send them to me the editing was horrible they were way too edited, I could’ve done a better job if I could that’s how bad they were. I asked him nicely if he can just give me the pictures unedited and just how they are and it took him a whole day to get back to me. He finally sent the pictures but a lot of them were missing , I’d say a good 100 were missing. I emailed him asking where they are and he never emailed me back, I tried texting him and he never replied. It doesn’t even say delivered and when I call it goes straight to voicemail which means he blocked me because my husband called him and it was fine. He’s obviously just in for the money he got what he wanted and blocked me so he wouldn’t have to deal with me anymore. Worst experience ever with a photographer and mostly on the most important day of my life.
