Brian was great with our two puppies, Ziva and Zoe. His patience with two new puppies was amazing. He worked with them on several different behaviors. His training method works with clickers and rewards for desired behaviors. Both dogs picked up on his training quickly and effectively. He is always available by phone to answer any questions we might have. Would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a reliable, effective dog trainer.

Chris is a wonderful dog trainer and I highly recommend him. First, all 4 of my dogs love him! He is calm, yet assertive and has great control of them. I am currently focusing my training on my 2 puppies and am seeing improvement in their behavior each week. Also, Chris is very patient with me as the owner. I am someone who needs to break down each part of the lesson and hear my part repeated so that I am the most responsible pet owner I can be and he deals with that expertly! We are very glad we chose him!

Jane is an excellent dog trainer, although I believe she helped me more than my crazy wheatie. I was really impressed with how much knowledge she has and patience. I would definitely recommend her to my friends and family. She showed me some tools I can use to use while training my puppy. You will not be disappointed!!!!!!!

As the mom of two border collies, I want to make certain my kids are in the best of care. I have an older dog (13) and a rambunctious puppy (9 months). Danielle is responsible, kind, flexible, understands neurotic dog moms and based on the photos I receive from the dog park - fun! A five paw rating from our family!

Brianna did an initial evaluation of our 5 month old corgi, Obi. She is very knowledgeable and observant. She asked a lot of questions and really took her time with listening to our concerns and what we ultimately are looking for. She explained that a “one size fits all” approach to dog training doesn’t work.....it’s very individualistic. We look forward to working with her in the future!

Smokey Joe, our 7-lb, Yorkie-Poo (with some other stuff mixed in), was a wild man, er, dog. When we would try to get him to come to us to take him out to "conduct his business", he would think it was a game of tag (and we were "it"). He was so fast and nimble that we could not catch him. Carol Harris met Smokey Joe and us and within the 1st half hour of his 1st lesson, Smokey was behaving better. Carol was very good with him and patiently explained to us how we would have to behave to improve Smokey's behavior. We liked the old Smokey Joe, but we like the new Smokey Joe even better thanks to Carol's efforts. I would unreservedly recommend Carol as an outstanding trainer for any of your dog's issues.

I have called dog trainers all around the U.S., and Tackett Service Dogs in Palm Beach was the only company that actually cared! Love that they are a family owned company, and don't just care about the money. They take their training seriously, and truly care about each and every dog that they work with. I chose to work with this company out of all of the others that are local to me in Georgia.

Jillian is the BEST service dog trainer out there. She keeps her dogs groomed beautifully and maintained. All of the dogs she have trained are absolutely brilliant. Also, she takes the time to put the dogs on a raw diet which is AWESOME. I recommend to anyone if you want your dog to become to BEST service dog and if you want them to be in the BEST care.

Yes Dog Training has been a God-send. Stuart is great with our dog, Molly, and knew just how to address some dominant behaviors we wanted to correct. He also came very last minute to take care of her when we went out of town for a couple of days. Molly loves him and we love that he is trustworthy and responsible.

My experience with Kelly was great! I have to admit I was a little cynical simply because my dog’s behavior was extremely challenging. At the end of the training, I was left with a well behaved dog and additional tips and tricks! I’d recommend Love On A Leash Dog Training to anyone.

Marti is an excellent trainer, both for the owner and the dog, or dogs in my case. The improvement after the initial visit is beyond my expectation. She came prepared with collars and harnesses and tried different options to figure out which would be most effective for both the dogs and the owners. We plan on scheduling another lesson, after we continue to work with the dogs on our own for a little while. You can tell marti truly cares about your pet and the well being of both you and your dog. I would highly recommend her if you are looking for a dog/owner trainer.

Kaitlyn with Canine Concepts is the best! We brought our 7 month old black lab, Molly, to her looking for obedience training. Kaitlyn responded to our request within minutes and after our initial text on a Sat, meeting on Sun, we dropped off Molly for training on Monday. The process was super quick and we knew immediately she was the trainer for us. She is extremely knowledgable, friendly, and great with our dog. She had Molly for 3 weeks and sent us video updates all the time. She treated Molly like one of her own. When we got Molly back she went over everything we needed to do to continue the training at home, and even came to our house for another training session after we were home for a couple weeks. Molly is a much better, and obedient dog now. She will sit, stay, down, here, place, kennel, drop it, leave it, etc. She walks on a leash without pulling, and doesn't go crazy when people and dogs walk by. She also trained Molly with an e-collar so we can have her off leash at times. We are extremely happy with Molly's progress. Kaitlyn is also available anytime for us to ask her questions, and we also board Molly with Kaitlyn anytime we are away.

Steven just left and I am really impressed. He is obviously very passionate about what he does and certainly understands my dog. He got to understand him very quickly and did lots of work from the moment he arrived. I have a lot to learn and look forward to working with him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
