Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

To find out exactly how much it will cost to fix your desktop, laptop, Apple or PC computer, request cost estimates from computer repair specialists near you.

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

This was my first experience with Thumbtack, which I never heard of until I did a Google search in my area for computer repair. I reached out to several professionals recommended by the site. Mr. Orta of Orta PC Repair was one of the ones which I was able to talk to and was very professional and accommodating. We arranged for him to look at my computer immediately, which he was able to run a diagnostic and offer several suggestions. I had an older computer with a failed motherboard, so finding a replacement motherboard and compatible parts to work with the new motherboard would have been a challenge. Mr. Orta was able to locate a replacement motherboard at a reasonable price. However with the age of the computer and its parts, there were compatibility issues once installed. I say all this to demonstrate Mr. Orta's determination to do whatever was possible to salvage what he could from my computer and offer me the least expensive alternative, which he gave me several options including building a new computer. After taking some time for me to research and access what would be best for my needs, I decided that having a new computer built and transferring some compatible parts from my old computer was the best solution. Mr. Orta ordered the parts needed for the custom build at very reasonable rates as well as his labor. During my time of trying to decide what I wanted to do, he offered good suggestions to increase speed such as having a Solid State Drive, which I had him put in the new computer. It starts up quickly and operates fast. He also threw in some other extras to help optimize my computer. etc. which he delivered the computer right to my office and set it up and connected everything. Mr. Orta was professional, patient, knowledgeable, and always looked out for my best interest as a customer regarding technical needs and price point. When I first talked to him, I felt deep in my Spirit that choosing his company for my computer repair was a good choice. I had know idea that it would open up the door for me to now have reliable, fast, costumed built computers at an affordable price, and not the exorbitant prices I have paid in the past with some of the big computer companies that offer customization. I highly recommend Orta PC Repair.

Erick is very professional and courteous. He came to our home to assess the problem with our computer, ordered the part, and returned to fix the computer. He has promised to come back with one small piece, but wanted to get us up and running in the meantime. He kept in touch with me the whole time and was easy to reach. We had the same computer person for fifteen years before moving to this area, and, as I told Erick, I was dreading the day when something went wrong that I wasn't able to handle myself. I now feel that we have found our "new" trusted computer repair person.

Zack was so helpful. I was panicked because my computer wouldn't start. Zack returned my phone call immediately and set up a free consultation at my convenience within an hour of my call. He diagnosed the problem quickly and quoted a price for parts and labor. Brooke, his wife, kept in touch to let me know the status of the part order, and Zack made the repair the day the part came in. Service was quick, and the charge for parts and labor was very reasonable. My computer is like new! I highly recommend Zack at Gateway Tech IT Services!
