Francis is a very helpful and patient trainer. My dog is a little crazy but he was always kind and understanding with her. He offered solutions to all of the behavior problems I brought up with him and we're already seeing results! Once we tackled the first few training issues he worked with me on some additional training and was very open to working on everything I brought up. We even started on doing some scent games with my dog. I'm very happy!!! Definitely will come back to Francis and Oh Good Dog training in the future if the need arises. :)

Within minutes of putting up my request on Thumbtack, Dawn responded with what ended up to be an amazing offer for training. I just received my dog back yesterday, and I can already see the results. She did a wonderful job and worked with him on everything I asked, and as of now, everything I have seen has been a success. She sends periodic updates while your dog is away just like she promises, and makes it much easier to leave your furry friends for the allotted time. Dawn went above and beyond in helping my dog and myself, and the training has transferred excellently. I would highly recommend this service to anyone trying to take the obedience of their dog to the next level with the amazing Off Leash training.

We started Pups to Pooches when our pup was about 12 weeks old, and went through (2) 6-week sessions of training. The training was easy to learn for both our dog and us, and Ann provided lots of feedback to make sure we were giving the proper cues. We received follow-up information via email to help reinforce all that was learned. Ann was in tune to the pups, and helped determine any issues that might arise and the best course of training based on the pups' personalities. Ann gives lots of personalized attention. This was by far the best dog training I've experienced with any of my dogs.

Loved that they worked with me in putting a custom program together to work with my budget. That was my biggest set back to get her trained. Getting the training my dog needs with a budget I can afford. I will do more training for advanced later on.

Danny hasn't started with Keith yet. We have a vet check today before Danny goes to Keith for a 10 day to two week stay for his training. Keith and one of his dogs came to our house yesterday to meet and give a preliminary assessment of Danny. Keith spent more than an hour with us and our dog. He spoke with me about his experience, philosophy on dog training and his methods. I got the impression that what he does isn't a profession or a job for Keith: it's a calling. Initially I was reluctant to entrust anyone with Danny for such a long period. However, after spending time with Keith my husband and I feel very confident that Danny is going to enjoy his time with Keith and his "pack" of two dogs. And, we'll see Danny and watch his progress every day through INSTAGRAM reports. Awesome. Our end-of-training report will be more detailed, but I'm confident it will heap praise on the results obtained with Keith. We're happy to become members of Keith's "pack" and look forward to a long continued relationship Beverly Gray, Cartersville

I cannot say enough about Sonja McBerry with Dog Training in your Home. The lessons she provides are so personalized and because they take place in your own home the training covers exactly what you need where you need it. Sonja did a great job teaching me how to work with and train my dog so she would be well behaved. Even after the private training stops the group lessons continue to benefit your dog. it is so nice to have someone you can rely on and turn to when you/your dog needs a refresher or you just have a question.

Awesome!!! It's very simple. Doron may be one of the best trainers I've come across. He doesn't only have great patience when it comes to training your puppy, he is also very thorough when it comes to informing you of the techniques and reasoning behind them. Will definitely suggest using his services or even just talking to him and getting a better understanding of your puppy.

My 5 month old puppy and I both love working with Kris at Family Dog Training! I went to her looking for basic obedience training, but was thrilled to learn that she is also certified in several areas of dog fitness and agility training! She uses her knowledge to add fun, and safe, exercises which incorporate the basic obedience skills we are learning. This is a great way to have fun with your dog or puppy, and create a stronger bond with your pet!!

I am in the best shape of my life as a result of training under the guidance of Awaken Performance Training’s Brandon Thomas. After training under Brandon’s expertise for over three years and nearly 55 years young, I feel as if I have found that elusive fountain of youth. I would definitely encourage anyone that wants to improve their quality of life to give him a try. He will make a difference in your life.

It's been an awesome experience working with Puppy Training 1 on 1 so far, we've done two private lessons with Jake and our golden retriever and couldn't be happier with the level of service we've gotten. Jake has been amazing, and we're seeing significant improvement in our puppy!

Working in Alpharetta and living in Midtown makes it difficult for me to give my 60 lb. dog the time and attention he needs throughout the day. Anita has been a great resource for our family. She makes sure Liam gets to burn off pent up energy, as well as provides affection before she leaves. I always get a picture of his smiling face, and that gives me the peace of mind that my furbaby is happy. I highly recommend her.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Lexi is a Shih Tuz, she was 1 yr old on 9/14/12. We got her just before Thanksgiving last year (2011). She is my first dog (I'm 55 yrs) I just love her so much, because of this she may be a bit spoiled :). I took her to puppy kindergarten at PetSmart because I have not enforced what we learned she seems to have forgotten all except "sit". She is very smart and so cute that I let her get away with stuff. At the moment my biggest concern is her coming when called (she runs from me).
