Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

Is it worth it to hire a professional to mow your lawn?

Although hiring a lawn care company is more expensive than doing it yourself, it can be well worth the money. For starters, it saves you time and equipment maintenance, which may be justifiable financially. It also creates a more professional appearance. Plus, a pro can spot problems before they occur. This can save you money on expensive reseeding, aeration and other types of lawn repair down the road.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What is included in lawn service?

Full-service lawn care companies typically offer a wide range of lawn care services, including mowing, mulching, landscaping, leaf removal, tree and shrub care, and more.

Companies may offer additional specialty services, depending on your location and the type of business. For example, a company may provide seasonal maintenance services such as aeration, hedge trimming and weeding, while another offers pest control, seeding services and grub control.

What's the best way to maintain your lawn?

Keeping a lawn lush and green requires consistent mowing, weeding, watering, fertilizing and more. If your lawn is particularly large, it may make sense to hire a full-service lawn care provider. Whether you take a DIY approach or bring in the experts, maintaining your lawn requires a range of tasks.

Plan to mow the lawn often, allowing it stay longer than may seem convenient — longer grass is healthier grass. The general rule is to cut off no more than a third of the grass blade. This helps prevent damage to the lawn as well as keeping weeds from taking root. It’s also important to remove any weeds, then prevent new ones from growing. In spring, consider spraying a pre-emergent herbicide on your lawn to prevent crabgrass and other types of weeds from sprouting from seed. During other seasons, broadleaf weeds like dandelions can be pulled by hand or sprayed with weed killers. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, allowing the sun to help dry the grass. Make sure to thoroughly soak the lawn so that the water penetrates several inches into the ground.

Lawn care also requires feeding; look for a mixture of fast- and slow-release fertilizers that include nitrogen. Some lawns also benefit from aeration, which creates small holes to let air, water and nutrients penetrate the grass roots. Although most homeowners can manage these tasks on their own, a full-service lawn care company can handle them on a regular schedule, taking the guesswork out of maintaining a beautiful lawn.

Mr. Brown solved a huge problem for me! I had knee surgery and couldn't cut my grass for six weeks. My backyard was a mess. Within two hours, Mr. Brown had cut my yard down to size which relieved a ton of stress that I was experiencing as I watched my grass grow higher and higher. Brown's Lawn Care and Services was a pleasure to deal with. I have now arranged to have Browns Lawn Care and Services as my primary yard care professional!

Nilton and his team provided service in a high quality. Nilton not just mowed lawn but also would have some helpful suggestion on how to maintain or edge or take out some wild grasses.

Took over a week to come out to my house after I initially contacted them. And then tried to charge me a extremely high price because our grass was too long. If they would have been a promptly service, it would have been shorter.

Just moved and was looking to get my yard serviced. Kore was able to come out that day & did not disappoint. He schooled me on how to get my grass healthy and what to do until next visit. We came up with a plan to tackle front landscape. I’m excited!

This was one of the absolute easiest tasks I have ever had done here. I needed my grass cut (long overdue so the grass was really high and out of control) and Hodo’s Lawn Care replied quickly and was able to come out with hardly any advance notice. I wasn’t home but they took before and after pictures to confirm the work they had done and the entire process was just so smooth and pleasant. No hassles, no back and forth to schedule a time and date, just great communication and excellent work done. I am very pleased and look forward to scheduling another service in a couple of weeks!

BE SURE TO ASK IF ANY OF THEIR CONTRACTORS SERVE IN YOUR AREA LawnStarter set me up with an account, told me when I'd have my first service, sent an email the day of the service telling me they couldn't make it out that day but would be there soon, and finally told me when I called them (a week later) that they deleted my account because literally no one services my area. Absolutely worst customer service I've ever experienced. Now my grass is super tall and I'll probably have to pay double for my next service. Thanks for wasting my time and money, LawnStarter!

If Thumbtack allowed me to give 6 stars, I would. Lawn.com and their crews are terrific. I recently contracted with them to maintain the grass in my yard. I found the bid to be reasonable, so we proceeded. Their communication was excellent -- keeping me up-to-date on all of the steps and the timeline. And most importantly, their work is meticulous. I really appreciate the quality of their work and their strong customer service skills.

He has not mowed the lawn twice per month as promised. He was there only 2 times since June 30 per tenant report. The last cut, the grass was so long, that when he left it on the lawn, it created dead spots, and clogged up the drains. His lawnmower broke my cleanout and security sign in the front. I have been paying for service twice per month and have not received that service. We started out in a good place, but have ended badly. Louise Berry

Jorge and Abel are both hard working, efficient, knowledgeable, and passionate in the services they provide. I informed Jorge that I needed lawn care ASAP, they met me the same day of our initial contact to survey the property, and finished the job the very next morning. In a period of only 2.5 hours they managed to collect about 4 months worth of fallen leaves, clean my driveway, mulch areas of my backyard, cut the grass, and groom all of the bushes and hedges in our yard. I gladly recommend their services to others!

I signed up a few weeks ago and have been scheduled and then re-scheduled 3 times and still had no service. I’ve had to make several calls inquiring when to expect someone. While the phone reps were very pleasant and apologetic I still am waiting for my grass to be cut. I messaged the vendor thru the app as well and never received a response. I called this evening to just go ahead and cancel the service since it’s dusk and no one has come but couldn’t get anyone on the phone and am still awaiting a call back.

Hello my name is Brandon and I contracted lawn.com to service my lawn. This was the first time using lawn.com and it will definitely be the last! The day after they serviced my lawn for $63 I had the privilege of spending my afternoon Raking 6 trash bags full of dead grass that was left on my lawn! Not to mention, the uneven levels and patches left throughout my yard. Indeed the grass was cut but by no means would I dare say that it was done by a professional. Attached are pictures of the work I did after getting off of my job cleaning up behind their team. The pictures will demonstrate Two Large piles of accumulated dead grass shavings left in my lawn. The 6 trash bags that I put the grass shavings into. The pictures will also demonstrate how uneven my lawn was using my neighbor’s yard as a reference! Upon speaking with two customer service associates (one management) they both agreed that the work done was Unacceptable, and they were able to see that based on the pictures taken by there own team. One of them stated “They don’t know why they would have left my lawn like that and voluntarily reassured me that my grievance would be taken to upper management.” I was informed that I had to submit an email in order to have them address my concerns. After doing as I was I told, several days went by and I received no response! So I called to follow up on my email 4 days later and was informed by a manager that either he or his immediate supervisor would be returning my call with a solution by the end of the day! Of course that never happened. So after calling back the following day, I was told by a member of upper management it was nothing they could do to address my concerns as a customer unless I spent more money with them. In addition, I was told that they did what they were contractually obligated to do and I should be happy that they performed the services they did at that price because really they should have charged me more then the price THEY quoted me at. To top it all off I was quoted one price and charged another which I later had to dispute. In Closing, If you would like to pay a company $65 to get get a good work out so that your lawn is presentable lawn.com is a perfect fit!! The amount of calories you'll burn cleaning up after their staff will have you fit in no time!

I hired Clean Cut Lawn Service to cut my grass 10 days ago. Michael said that the work could be completed that day, with an ETA between 3-4, a text before beginning, and that I would not need to be home during service. By 5:00, I had not heard from Michael, so I texted him. He said that he was running late because he was repairing a motor. The next morning, Michael sent a message at 8:45 stating that he was on his way and that his ETA was 9:30. When he didn't show, I texted him at noon and never heard back. I sent a final text on Monday asking to cancel my service. This is a highly unprofessional way to conduct business. I am disappointed and will be looking elsewhere.

So the weather is really crappy outside and I’m having an event in 2 days. I’ve been getting the run down for the past week from lawn care companies. Labeaud and I spoke on yesterday and had a plan of action with the crappy weather and his plan of attack on the yard. This is the best lawn company on Thumbtack. It was a team of two who attacked my yard and edged, trim and even hand trimmed some grass spots. I will definitely use this company again. Remind you it’s pouring down raining outside and 3 of my neighbors have texted me and called wanting his information and to cut their yard ASAP. His professionalism and customer service is top notch. I will recommend this company services every time.

I used D's Lawn Care on about 2 occasions. The first to add grass seeds to my lawn. The next was to provide bi-weekly lawn service to my rental property. Mowing: Derrick of D's Lawn Care scheduled the mowing service for the following week after my request and said he would get back to me on the exact date. He didn't. I reached out to him and he confirmed that he never went to the property because his mower broke. A situation I can understand, but would have certainly appreciated a message or call that he couldn't make it. Anyway, I'm a forgiving person so I was fine with rescheduling. He rescheduled and completed the mowing service that next week. Recall, this was supposed to be a bi-weekly service. I never heard from him again. A couple of weeks later, I checked in with him about 2 or 3 times, but no response. I hate leaving less than pleasant reviews for small businesses because I know the impact it could have. However, my hope is that D's Lawn Care takes this review into consideration. Failing to provide advance notice when you cannot perform a job or ignoring customer messages is unprofessional and will not serve your company well. The key to good customer service is always good communication.
