Introduction: Let's get you playing guitar. I can boil down what seem an overwhelming confusion of things that go into playing so they are simple, easy and quick to learn. Knowing what you want to get out of playing means we can set up a series of goals to reach that keep playing fun, forward and interesting. Me? I grew up with music as a passion, learned the long way through years at a performing arts high school, attending Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory of Music, Boston University Conservatory and finally Harvard. I signed a record contract out of college and toured extensively in the early 1990s, have put out 9 albums of my own, performed on countless other albums, and recently have begun developing promising students - teaching them to write, perform and record. I am particularly proud of Mia Green - out now on spotify and itunes. We are currently recording her 2nd album. I am also still playing upwards of 100 shows a year in original and tribute bands covering musical styles from Honky Tonk, Rock, British Invasion, Country, Southern Rock, Soft Rock, Blue Grass, Blues, Jazz and more. I like to learn as much as teach. I fell in love with teaching almost 15 years ago and have been working largely with repeat students and word of mouth to gain new ones. But I'd like to take on more at this point. Let me set up a lesson with you and I think you'll like how easy and fun learning an instrument can be. Let get you playing guitar! I also teach: Bass, Drums, Piano, Voice, Music Theory, Song Writing, Performance, Band Coaching, Recording & Producing Performance: I also manage bands for parties and events (play in them, too), as well as record and produce music. Recording: I am a songwriter and have had record contracts, as well as selling songs to other singers and performers for their careers. I am happy to provide references upon request.

Matt has taught guitar and drums to our two boys for 9 years. He is passionate, brilliant, and inspiring. He works extraordinarily hard to give his students an authentic, rigorous, and rewarding music life, complete with lessons and shows. He has become a cherished pillar of our family’s life and our kids’ childhood.

Matthew is a great teacher. He uses songs you want to learn as the starting point for lessons, which makes learning both easier and more fun. I already played guitar before starting lessons with him, but I wanted to improve my playing, learn new styles, get better technique, and understand the music theory behind great songs. Matthew has a wealth of knowledge in all of these areas and more, and his lessons have made me a far better guitarist.

Matthew has been an excellent teacher for our son. We are continually impressed by his level of skill and knowledge and have seen our son make great improvements in his ability to play the guitar as well as understand music theory. We also really appreciate Matthew’s connections in the local music community and his encouragement of our son to play in public spaces. We highly recommend Matthew!

Matthew goes beyond just where to place your fingers on the guitar - he puts the technique in context and teaches about the music as well as the instrument.
Matthew Chenoweth Music's reply
Thanks Jill! Jeb has a natural feel for the guitar and takes to it easily!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I am pretty flexible on scheduling. I am always willing to work out rescheduling lessons if there is a conflict so that each student gets every lessons they pay for. Rescheduling usually happens on a different day the same week of the original lessons.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I like to listen to the student play a song or two of their choice, if possible, and see what directions they want to try to take their playing. At that point we can discuss the scope of what it will take to get there and work out the most efficient way to achieve their goals.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Boston University Conservatory, and an AB from Harvard. I have had 2 record contracts and toured extensively for 10 years playing upwards of 250 shows a year. I manage, develop artists, engineer recordings, produce recordings, teach performance and currently still plays 100s of shows a year.
