My backdoor threshold was rotten and needed to be replaced. All other contractors indicated that I would have to order a new door, but Mr. Wilkins said he could replace the damaged wood and reseal it. He quoted a fair price and was able to schedule the job quickly. Due to some of the water damage, my wood floor needed repair as well. I had some extra pieces and he was able to replace the floor too. Work was done in a few hours. I am really happy with the work performed.

Our AC went out and Michael came right away. He was at my house in one hour. Michael is very professional and trustworthy. I felt good about him as a contractor. Michael came on day he promised and completed the job on same day. He put in a new AC and inside air handler. My new unit works great and his price was very competitive. I highly recommend Michael if you have heating or AC problem. Thank you Affordable AC

Jose' and Ali are finishing up several projects at my house. The big one was a renovation to my patio where I wanted to remove 2 of the support pillars, add a LVL beam and change the existing beams to stacked stone. It was a big project, but the job they did is outstanding and they did it in record time. They also replaced 2 doors that were rotting out. I've been looking for a contractor like this since I moved into my current house. They have earned a customer for life. Their prices are very reasonable, they work very hard to make sure it's right, and they do fantastic work. They'll be back for the other future projects I can dream up, not to mention the repairs that any house needs from time to time.

My experience with Toney has been nothing short of exceptional. I was contacted by him Friday evening, he came to quote Saturday, and completed a comprehensive clean up, seed, and weeding job on Sunday. He’s very communicative, pleasant, and reasonable- when you’re a property manager those are three qualities that you absolutely need in a contractor. I plan on using him for other properties in the near future.

Contractors were able to come same day! They were knowledgeable and got right to work to repair the issue. They actually gave a once over on my sprinkler system after the repair. My only small suggestion is to give a bit more care with placing the ground and grass back as near as possible to before after having being removed for repair.

Our landscape project was a long overdue task. We vetted more than 10 different landscape contractors because we wanted the job done right, the first time with an exceptional level of detail and care. In the end, Phillips Home Services earned our business because they a) listened to our expressed needs and provided solutions, b) asked intelligent questions to uncover our unexpressed needs. Hayden then offered insightful solutions to those too, and c) quality references. It also helped that Hayden was “Johnny on the spot” with detailed, thorough digital on the spot quotes and pictures of his ideas too. He’s not the most expensive nor is he the cheapest landscape contractor, he’s the one who delivers services with a joyful smile, enthusiasm and can-do attitude! Phillips Home Services offered a balanced blend of quality, value, and price—a triple threat in any business. The entire experience was uncommonly delightful. Hayden and his team showed up when they said they would and not a moment after. They stayed until the job was done to our satisfaction. They cleaned up thoroughly and left the project ready for pictures. Every member of the Phillips team was incredibly polite, humble and detailed oriented. They worked hard every day, no standing around chit chatting on this crew. This team took pride in their work and our yard shows. So much so that the project got the attention of the neighbors who slowly drove by admiring our new landscape. We’ve had lots of contractor experiences. This is by far one of the very very best. We will have Hayden and the Phillips Home Services team back and we’re telling all our friends to hire them.

Very inventive at developing unique, as well as cost effective, landscaping and hardscaping plans. ALWAYS, gets the job done on time and in budget. Have worked with him for many years through expansions and conversions of wooden stairs and decking to more permanent materials. He even empathized with us and salvaged plants when we had to redo a landscaped area after only 2 years due to a septic tank catastrophe! Effortless to work with!

When I my wife and I decided that we wanted to transform our backyard into more than just a yard we reached out to Greentree landscaping. We were referred by 2 of our neighborhors who said that they had the best experience with them. When I first met Jay and Britain I knew immediately that they were the real deal. They were on time, kind, and listened to the ideas I had in mind for our yard. They offered me many solutions that all ranged in price and when I told them what my budget was they helped to work with me to ensure that my budget was not gone over. They did a fantastic job on the project and they were very punctual with everything that they did. My wife and I are extremely impressed with the high quality of work that they did and how professional they were. They have a great work ethic and are a great team that works together to come up with visions of what can be done for you and how they can transform your property. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs landscaping or hardscaping done. They did great and we are very pleased with how the final product came out.

Overall I am very pleased with the way my gate turned out. The only hiccup was when Keith came out he quoted me a price which I assumed was for labor and materials. Turns out it was for only labor. Yes it was stated on my quote, but everything was done on his mobile phone to process our transaction. I did not open the quote to review. We talked and it seemed great so I hired him. It has been a very rare event to have a contractor come to my house and only quote me labor and if they did, they specifically mentioned it to me while talking. I should have asked, but I felt like Keith should have stated it was for labor only. In the end Keith ate half the cost ($150 roughly) of the materials to make it right which was very much appreciated.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
