Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

I hired Felipe to complete some drywall, paint, and railing repairs in our basement after we had a small foundation leak and the remediation company company removed the bottom 2 feet of drywall in 3 rooms. I also decided to have him paint our bedroom, prep and paint over 15 year old wallpaper in our dining room, and paint the other rooms in the basement. All I can say is that he did an awesome job. Showed every day at 7am and basically worked to 6pm. Prepped the work areas to make sure the areas stayed clean (floors, furniture, etc) and made sure I was happy with each repair before moving onto the next one. Would absolutely recommend him to anyone needing drywall and paint work done.

Charity was the least expensive of six quotes I received and it was very easy to negotiate my contract with Bobby as he was understanding and knowledgeable. Ultimately, we added several features at my request. Most important to me, Bobby agreed to allow me some sweat equity for credit to fit my budget. We arranged an agreeable time two weeks out, but Charity was able to reschedule at my convenience for an earlier time. I hired Charity to do three jobs: refinish my hard wood floors, install new carpet and install hardwood floor in a walk-in closet. Refinishing the hardwood floors in my kitchen, dining and living room, required three days due to the drying time for multiple coats of stain. Bobby and his crew worked diligently to complete work in the shortest time possible. Throughout the process, Bobby was very responsive to my phone calls and texts, as well as being very pleasant to work with. My floors turned out exactly as I wanted them. The carpet was installed in three bedrooms and a hallway a couple days later. The carpet was of better quality than the one I had initially selected, at no additional charge, and looks beautiful. My walk-in closet floor was installed the day after the carpet. I call it my small dance floor. Bobby Steele and Charity are definitely go-to people should you ever need flooring services in the future. They are attentive, courteous and professional. They are a home run in value.

I had a very positive experience and my floors are BEAUTIFUL. I would recommend Flooring Zone company hardwood floor refinishing. I was asked to comment on what could be improved so here it is. I was told that the work would not be done by an outside contractor but that was not the case. This resulted in some communication clichés between my specific timeline requests and that of the outside contractor. But I will say that my timeline requests were honored without difficulty. Lastly, I finish by stating that I found the both FZ and the outside contractors to be very experienced, knowledgeable and true professionals.

Upon my initial contact with Cory, I wanted to install laminate wood flooring throughout my home. He thoroughly explained the process of removing the existing wood and carpet and the time-frame to get it all done. He was always prompt (working nonstop on some days) and delivered beyond my expectations. In the process, I added painting some rooms and repairs to some of the walls. Cory helped me to envision some additional changes to my home and I will definitely be using him for those projects in the near future.

Wilson Flooring replaced our foyer staircase carpet. My project objectives were price, quality and color which had to closely match the color of the upstairs landing and foyer area living room carpets. My objectives were exceeded! They were very professional, removed old carpet, installed new carpet and cleaned everything up. I am a very happy customer and will definitely use them again for all my flooring needs! I recently hired Luis from Sierra Handyman to finish a project in my basement. We were putting in a kitchen for our in-laws and realized quickly that it was a task better given over to the professionals. Luis was prompt and gave us a great estimate for the work required. We had him run new plumbing for the sink, install cabinets and countertops, as well as lay flooring. He completed some drywall work and came up with a great solution in getting rid of the outdated drop tile ceiling and put in a tray ceiling for us. You can hardly tell it's a room in the basement! He was respectful of our time frame and did a great job! Exactly what we envisioned. Will work with him again on additional projects for our home.

I would highly recommend Glauco. He did an amazing repair job with our hardwood flooring. The job was small but he handled with extreme care and went above and beyond our expectations of caulking some cracks around the area so that we don't have any future water problems. This shows that he cares for his customers. We are going to use him for our future flooring project.

I replaced basement flooring (carpet and wood) with luxury vinyl plank. The whole process from me initially submitting an enquiry to completion of the project was great. There was no hard sell - just good honest advice. Everything was completed as explained and I'm so happy with the end result.

Pro Flooring 323 LLC has completed flooring projects for two of my homes. I appreciated the owner's patience, because it took me a very long time to decide on the exact flooring color. The owner was easy to speak with and provided great suggestions. I also chose this company because the prices were reasonable compared to the big stores and the quality and installers were very nice and accommodating.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
