A real pleasure to work with Jontell. He was on time the same day we requested service. He was knowledgeable in handling some problems that cropped up during installation of our faucets and drain. He price was more than fair. I would definitely use him again. He does electrical, HVAC and carpentry.

In addition to Clarence's professional approach and candor, his no-nonsense recommendations makes all the difference. When he gave me the quote, which included material and labor, and then asked when do I want the installation to be done, I immediately responded, "Like yesterday." He and his crew turned up the next day (Saturday) and completed the work after delivering the materials on Friday...I am completely awed by such response and efficacy from a small business. If you're looking for a good HVAC installer and troubleshooter, please give Clarence from CAL property Care the opportunity to provide your needs. I guarantee you'll seldom find such honesty and professionalism. Great price, Great Attitude, Excellent service.

Hassan finished a partial installation that I had for a HVAC heat pump. He was very quick and prompt in contacting me, and in providing an estimate. When he discovered additional work was needed than what we had discussed during the initial phone call, he was upfront in communicating what is needed and the cost. I was very happy with his professional approach.

I agree with all of the reviews from other customers. In addition to the five star points, the most important character trait that I like to see in people is integrity. Ross was the only honest repairman that entered my house when I needed to have a blower motor replaced. The first two that I had out before I found Ross, came with a clipboard in hand, looked at the furnace, and told me that it would cost $1500-2000 to put in a new motor and motor wheels which would probably necessary, hence the $2000 price. Their best advice was to invest that money toward a $13K HVAC which would ultimately save me money and would provide me more comfort than the one I have now. Ross came with a tool box in hand, listened to what we wanted: repair the motor. He did that expertly and punctually. Value: It would have taken 10 years of saving the maximum amount of estimated reduction in utilities to recoup the loss. In addition we would have taken money out of savings which potentially at 10% for 10 years would be worth $33K. Now is that VALUE?

I'm super happy that we chose Cates HVAC to repair our heating units. Not only was he industrious and knew what he was doing very well, he also really charged us the price to repair both units what others would have charged for one of them. He was very honest and friendly as well. I definitely would recommend to other customers and will use him again if I have any HVAC issues.

With the upmost professionalism from scheduling to service you are treated like a valued customer. Austin who handles the HVAC side does not play games with phantom charges and is amazing to work with. They do not work on Sunday and Austin was amazing enough to call me and walk me through my HVAC repair. He saved the day! Who else would do something like that. Family owned and run is the way to go!!! You must hire them for all HVAC needs!!!!!

Mr. Gary was great! From the very first meeting, he was very professional. He took his time evaluating our home so that he could make the best recommendation for a new HVAC system. The actual installation process went pretty smoothly. I appreciate that he was always on time and he did what he said he would do. I also appreciated that we were involved in the process and were treated as educated consumers. We will be using Polar Tropic Services for years to come. We highly recommend them!

Good communication, very knowledgeable, and did clean high quality work (I'm a retired plumber and know what clean work looks like--there's a difference). Most importantly, Jack is trustworthy. I know this for a fact because another HVAC contractor (from Thumbtack) came out and quoted me $1,800 for this same repair. The guy said my two year old air handler must be replaced, the lines needed to be acid washed, many many pounds of expensive coolant would be needed to charge the new system, etc. Basically, it was the typical scammer sales pitch contractors notoriously use to raise costs-- "everything is broken and must be replaced", when in reality, it's a simple fix. In stark contrast to this other contractor, Jack was honest and only replaced what truly needed replacing. He did the whole job for just $239! You read correctly: another Thumbtack contractor $1,800, Jack $239. What's more, when it turned out my system needed an extra pound of coolant (not much), and it cost a little more than his original estimate (an estimate given sight unseen from email); Jack looked like someone ran over his puppy as he gave me the news. Clearly, this is a contractor who does not enjoy up-charging anyone. In a market filled is lazy scammers, it's refreshing to come across this young man who takes pride in his work and truly cares about giving people honest value.

Maurice did a great job! He came out on a Sunday! We had a leaky washer bib that had totally saturated the walls & trim. He completed the plumbing repair, replaced the drywall, cleaned up the area and took photos during and after. We have and are currently using him for other projects as well. Thanks Maurice!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
