If you are looking for a videographer for you special event, I highly recommend Genetix to capture those precious moments. We planned a private ceremony for April 25th at the breathtaking Roswell Mill with the backdrop of the waterfalls as our scenery. We were also in the process of planning a formal wedding on August 16th in Spencerport, NY for family and friends. After hiring Genetix to videotape our private ceremony and seeing the excellent quality of their production we have since cancelled the plans for another ceremony. Genetix professional work exceeded our expectation. We are now going to share the 30 minute video that was captured at the falls and save thousands. We can clearly hear all of the words and see the scenery. Nothing could compare to the first exchange. Our August wedding will now consist of our private ceremony video and a reception. It is also allowing us to repeat the video and reception in both hometowns. This would not have been possible if Genetix video was just average. Genetix is saving us thousands of dollars!!! My husband is ecstatic about the savings. Sounds like extra spending money in Hawaii. Lastly, if you are on a budget and would like to consolidate on capturing your special moments. I would also recommend Genetix for your still photos. This is not what they advertise but the owner, Randy Harris was very professional and accommodating. He did an outstanding job and he delivered our video ahead of schedule. It featured beautiful music when words weren't being spoken, a beautifully edited video, with leading captions and few photos. We had a couple of edit request and they quickly made the changes. They arrived early to capture scenery not in our setting areas. We will forever be grateful to Randy for capturing our New Beginning together...It was fabulous!! Genetix knows how to deliver excellence at a very reasonable price. The finished product far exceeds charges for their service.

Troy did an excellent job on the video and photography work for our movie premier. He is a true professional, always on time and excellent with our guests. Big, big fan of Holland Reid Photography. Very professional with great instincts, I'm always interested to see what she is shooting. So many photographers find a bit of success and then don't stray from their path. Holland seems to explore opportunities with each new shoot. I appreciate the variety of fresh perspectives she captures.

I'm not sure if we can say enough good things about Greg. He was easy to communicate with from day one. From setting up a payment schedule, to discussing ideas, to execution, he was AMAZING! He and his team went above and beyond to make sure we got every moment we wanted captured and so much more. He was always open to our ideas, which was key for us. He was extremely professional, but also personable and easy to work with. I would use him again in a heartbeat, and recommend him to anyone with video or photography needs.

Matt came and did some 1 year photos for our family with our daughter. We used someone different for her birth photos and while they were good photos before, Matt had a great eye for where to take photos and how to take them that other photographers seemed to miss or lack. He found some beautiful outdoor spots in our town and took us there for several hours of shooting. They turned out great and he also sent us all the electronic files, edited for the best shots. We look forward to using him again!

He was very competent and efficient. At first, I wanted a videotape of living room furniture to advertise and sell using Craigslist. However, Craigslist wouldn't accept the videotape due to it size. I then asked Patrick to instead clip 4-5 still pictures from the video and he did it very quickly. The stills were accepted by Craigslist. I'm very satisfied.

I very seldom take the time to post reviews regarding service; however, because I was so impressed with the service I received from HD Shot Studio I wanted to share my experience. I was working on a proposal as part of a consulting team and the decision was made on a Friday to include headshots for each team member and it had to be submitted by Sunday. Because I did not have a professional headshot I immediately contacted photographers in the area that could accommodate my short timeframe and deliver the headshot in the same day. I contacted HD Shot Studio from my Google search and talked with Dean who worked me in on Sunday and delivered the photos within a few hours. Given that I hate taking pictures, Dean was professional, easy to work and with made the photo shoot fun. He gave me different options with background and poses and spent enough time to deliver a terrific headshot. Thanks again Dean! I would recommend your service.

Ike and his crew were great to work with! They were quick to respond and worked really well with our photographers and really just blended into the background of the day. They traveled out of state and spent literally the entire day with us. The video is fantastic- if you are considering whether you should get video, you should! And we got a ton of material for a great price. My favorite is the 3 minute film of the best parts of the wedding. They also did an awesome thing where they got all our guests (we had 60 people) to come and say something as part of the full length hour long video like a live guest book which was so fun to watch and was like re-living the day! Overall great experience and product- definitely recommend.

I was so glad to have Pharren to help me with the video. I was touched by her professionalism and responsiveness. She arrived earlier than expected. We planned on a 3-hour service, but she continued to shoot the video for me after 3 hours and she even didn't have time to eat with us. Also, I love the video that Pharren shot before, even though it is not for wedding. But the video she took makes realize that she is unique and she always use video to tell a beautiful story, and that's why we chose her and loved her. If you are looking for someone to shoot a wedding or event video, I would strongly recommend her.

Daniel did a shooting for my AirBnB property, and the photos he took are stunning. I'm beyond happy that I chose him because his work would be nearly impossible to top. The photos weren't just great quality, they were also artistic. Daniel went above and beyond for me, making sure I had the perfect shot for every room in the house. The next time I need home photos done, which will be soon because I'm creating an event space, Daniel will be the only photographer I'll call.

I called Beverly Boy with hours to spare, needing a camera crew in a few hours to cover our event in downtown Atlanta, after we spoke on the phone, they quickly organized everything, and before we knew it a professional video crew showed up at our event ready to roll. They also took care of all of the editing, motion graphics, and music for the final video, everything came out great, and we are getting great reviews on the video. I would definitely recommend Beverly Boy Productions to anyone looking for a turn key video production solution.

Jasmine provided a very competitive quote (she was far less expensive than other photographers). The picture quality is acceptable. My only regret is not providing more direction to ensure certain shots were taken (i.e. group shots and family shots). I think Jasmine is a good option if you have time to provide creative direction during the event or shoot.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
