Adam was able to finish the job in a short time, without me needing to take time off work. And i have many more projects for him to work on my other house

AJ Construction installed sheetrock in a bonus space over the garage which included a bedroom, a walk-in closet, a full bath, a stairwell, and a hallway. Allen and his team were great to work with. They showed up on time and were very friendly. The quality of the sheetrock work was excellent, and all of the seams and joints were filled and sanded smooth and flat. Allen also helped with some other minor projects in other parts of the house. Will definitely use AJ Construction again on future projects.

JC Construction was engaged to provide replacement roofing for both my house in Irmo and my son's house in Red Bank. In both instances, JC Construction provided accurate estimates, met target dates for implementation and provided the service within the time frame estimated. I was present at both installations and found each work crew to be professional, efficient and operated effectively as a team. I am 100% satisfied with the service provided by JC Construction before, during and after installation. I highly recommend them!

After interviewing several contractors on and off thumbnails, I decided to hire Jordan and Jennifer to clean and paint the walls and trims of my house after my tenants left it in less than desirable condition. My initial interview was by phone with Jennifer. I was immediately sold by her energy, her willingness to accommodate my demanding schedule and her professionalism, not to mention the very reasonable pricing. After meeting the two of them in person, I was convinced that I had the right team. They did not disappoint. I was delighted by the result. This is a polite, respectful, trustworthy, and energetic couple who did not stop working until the job was complete and thoroughly done. Thy went above and beyond what I hired them for, and help me by changing over a dozen light bulbs, hauling trash and doing minor fixes prior to painting. Jennifer cleaned the house as if it were her own. I was amazed at the change when I made the final walk through. The house looked brand new again. I would hire Jordan and Jennifer anytime and recommend them to any of my friends, and even my grandmother and my children.

Paul Canada did a great job on my home repair. Some minor roofing, some siding work and some interior framing, drywalling and taping. He is very talented, punctual and efficient. He was able to bid the work quickly and at a reasonable cost. He performed three work with no change orders and did it when he said he would and finish quickly and cleaned up after himself. I was very impressed I will use him again

Residential troubleshooting and electrical - Our house has had a myriad of electrical problems since we bought it, but mostly small inconveniences. However, when half the power in the house went out, we needed to bite the bullet and hire an electrician. We decided on Mr. Houston, and what a great choice that was. He was punctual, professional, and knowledgeable. He was able to diagnose every issue that we had been facing. Along the way he educated us on what the issues were and how he was going to fix them and continually assured us he would not leave until they had been resolved. True to his word, he restored power to part of the house that was lacking and went on to fix other various wiring and power issues that the previous owner had left. He cleaned before he left, was friendly and considerate throughout, and really does have a lot of experience in the field. If you're looking on Thumbtack to hire an electrician in the CSRA, look no further.

The experience that we had with Punchman was absolutely wonderful! They re-did two bathrooms, which included moving sinks, toilets, bathtubs and tile work. They also added a laundry room, laid hardwood floors and did some other little things. The thing that impressed us the most was there quality of work, their timeliness and the importance that they put on for meeting the deadline. We were originally told by another contractor that we would not be able to be in our house by Christmas due to bathroom issue, but Punchman came in and had us completely finished in about 2 weeks. They also called over the Thanksgiving holiday just to make sure everything was perfect. We would highly recommend Punchman for any home project and we will never question ourself again for who to use to work on our house.

I do not know much about building houses, but when my dad walked through the initial structure, he said it was one of the most well-built houses he had seen. He said that Mr. Fleming did not "cut corners" and that it could be seen by the construction of the house.

I was fortunate enough to have Jeremy at Professional Wood Replacement do a substantial amount of work at my new (old) house. The floor in my half bath had rotted out, as well as the subflooring around my chimney. Jeremy came in to only quote installing the tile in the half bath, but upon hearing of the other problems I was having, went ahead and quoted the entire job. Jeremy ended up saving me around $1500 and the hassle of multiple contractors coming through to do the same job. On top of the savings, Jeremy did the job sooner than the others could have, even working early and late to try to meet my deadline. You'll want to consider Professional Wood Replacement for any jobs for which you need some good advice, timely work and conscientious--dare I say innovative--cost saving efforts. You'll enjoy working with Jeremy, he's very experienced and sincere and will make sure you're satisfied with the results.

We hire Adam for a small damage on my front of the house floor. He look at the problem and without hesitation he accept. The funny part was he so worry to only patch my floor with a different pattern of tile. I told him it's ok. He did the work so good he was able to save the entire tile and put it back and look like new. Adam is a true professional and I recommend him to everybody. Thanks! For your help!

We decided to have our 1908 brick stairs partially rebuilt using similar bricks. We also had the foundation around the porch repointed. John had the stairs and the foundation looking brand new! The work was completed sooner than promised and I was thrilled with the final product. All of my flaking bricks had been replaced with identical bricks and the mortar looked fabulous. I will be using John to complete the rest of the remaining brickwork projects at the rear of the house. Outstanding value for the work performed! I highly recommend John for any brick project!

Shawn was sent to me by the seller's Realtor to make a repair required in the sales contract - and I was not feeling too warmly toward them as it took way too long to send him over. I wasn't really expecting anything more than that from him, but he was prompt, thorough and professional, so I asked if he could do a couple of small jobs for me. He was again prompt, thorough and professional, so I asked him to do a bigger job. While doing these jobs, he also helped me with a few little things around the house that I'd had waiting. I was especially impressed with the way he noticed aspects of the work that I hadn't thought of, and his ability to solve whatever problem came up during the job. All the work is done now, and I couldn't be happier. In fact, now I'm thinking about adding some gutters too, and will surely be calling Shawn if I decide to do it. I really appreciate his work and trust him to do it right, and recommend him completely. Thanks Shawn!

Chris has done multiple jobs for our fixer upper house we just purchased. Some have been minor (replacing door casings and building a window seat for us) and others have been large (adding new railing to our wrap around front porch and upgrading our wooden columns). He has done an outstanding job with every project. He always goes above and beyond with quality! We will hire him again and again for any needs we have.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
