These guys were, in short, amazing! I'm completely impressed with how fast they moved everything. They had my 10x10 storage (which was packed full, top to bottom, from a two bedroom apartment) loaded up in less than an hour before heading to our 1br apartment to clear it and bring it all to our new house. I could be more pleased. I mentioned them to my, now past, neighbors and they want me to send them their number. If/when I move again these guys will be first call! Very friendly, prompt, and thorough. Thank you gentlemen!

He was extremely helpful, timely and professional. I just needed items moved to storage and discovered other services he could provide like building modular furniture. I know who I will be calling to put my next desk or cabinet together. "Some assembly required" will be left to him.

Overall everything was great. My two movers did an excellent job! I will be requesting them (Tre & and did not catch the other young mans name) to come back and move me when I buy a place and have to move out of storage. I don't know where the miscommunication happened but they showed up in a very small truck and I knew it would not work so they had to leave and get another truck. So we got started at noon instead of 9. Which I did not want to be driving in 5'oclock traffic because it was a hours drive to my location so it took about 1 1/2 or a little more to get there. However, they never stopped nor slowed down. They did not even have hand trucks. I could not believe how they were carrying these huge pieces of furniture by hand. And let me tell you I have very heavy solid wood heavy antique furniture. We ended up with a 26 foot truck packed full and had to put the washer and dryer on my uncles truck. I was so afraid it would never fit into a 10x20 unit. Tre assured me they would make it work and they did. They did an outstanding job!!!! I cannot say enough about how hard these two guys work. It was 94 degrees and they never slowed down for 6 hours. I will recommend them to anyone and I will always use them in the future.

These guys were awesome. Mike and Bryan took care of our stuff and were very professional. Sharon got us set up and was flexible with our move. We had a local move plus a stop at storage. They even took off a huge load of trash/junk/construction material and a deep freezer. These are hard-working guys who care about their customers. I would highly recommend them.

I cannot say enough great things anout Ronnie and his staff! They came early for the job, and were well-prepared to move my storage and repack furnishings that the last movers had done such a terrible job on. This team is one of the best I’ve ever worked with- they were courteous, and really hustled to get this done right! Ronnie did his best to give me a righteous deal on this move, and the care they took with my things was exemplary. I HIGHLY recommend RMLJ Movers, and if I could give them a 10 Star Rating, I would! Outstanding job, thanks so much RMLJ Enterprises!

Moving can be such a stressful event, but with In and Out Movers I felt at ease from the initial contact to the very end. They made my moving experience as stressfree as possible. In addition to the excellent customer service they provided outstanding customer care. I was moving some of my late grandmother's things into storage and they were sure to take extraordinary care of those sentimental items. I am more than pleased and would recommend them to anyone in need of customer service based, efficient and reliable movers.

Compass Liberty Express, LLC is an excellent piano moving company. The workers are professional and polite. They moved my baby grand piano perfectly and set it up in my family room in short order. They also arrived even early at the storage unit where the piano was kept. I would recommend them to anyone who needs to have a piano moved.

Aiken's movers did an amazing job! I needed help with moving a 10x10 storage unit and all of the contents of my condo into a larger condo here in town. Ronnie was very detailed and communicated promptly. They showed up 10 mins early and worked very hard and with care until the job was done. I would absolutely hire them again and do recommend them to my friends and family.

Jason and his moving crew were fantastic! They worked quickly and efficiently, and were three of the nicest guys I've ever met. In fact, we were so satisfied that we have already hired them to move our belongings out of storage and into our new home after we close. Additionally, my new husband has hired them for a third job moving his belongings into our new home the following weekend. I can't say enough about how pleased we are with their work. We can hardly wait to see them again in a few weeks! 10 out of 10!

The job involved moving the household goods (furniture and mainly boxed items) from a 1BR w/Den apartment to a storage unit, consisting of about 20 pieces of furniture and 60 mostly large boxes. The crew arrived at 9 am, well within their scheduled 8 - 10 window, viewed the apartment contents and route to street level and got to work by 9:15. The whole job was completed by noon, or within 2.75 hr., compared with the original estimate of 4.5 hr. All crew members had a good attitude and showed considerable initiative, asking only a few well thought out questions. I plan to hire MyPorter again for the move back from the storage unit to renovated apartment.

The best moving experience I have ever had. They responded to my request for a quote quickly and then came over with two options for pricing. I have antiques and they were wrapped and moved to a storage unit with impeccable care and quality of service. I will be moving again and will schedule them for my second move. They have the highest rating I could possibly give. Thank you for a great job!

The Job: Empty a 10x30 storage building full of cabinetry, office furniture, granite countertops and more. Brothers-on-the-Move did a very good job. They offered a competitive rate; they showed up on time; they were professional and courteous; they worked hard; they were careful; and they got the job done. I will have them help me again with another move that I am planning. Bottom line: Recommended

We were looking for a local moving company when we decided to upgrade from a 1 bedroom 3rd story apartment to a house. The Metro Moving team was easy to work with, punctual and helped us have a carefree move. I would recommend Metro Moving to anyone that has a move coming up and needs reliable, trustworthy movers. I will definitely use them again if I decide to move.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
