Exceptional service! The movers were prompt, professional and strong! They disassembled, carefully wrapped and loaded all our stuff in no time at all. It was so easy, I can't believe I ever considered doing it ourselves. I would definitely recommend them and will use them for any future moves.

These young men were my life savers. I was done VERY dirty by Ready To Move Movers off of Fulton Industrial, only part of my apt was moved due to their error in getting the correct size truck. They took my money...ignored my calls. I was in a desperate situation needing to get the remainder of my items and Chris and his staff came to my rescue at a very reasonable FLAT fee. Chris was quick to respond...did the move same day...beat me to the location and was very professional!!! I can't rave enough about the quality of service I received. These guys cleared my apt in 30 mins... I was spook impressed. I will recommend their services to ANYONE needing to move. Thank you, Chris!!!

Needed a three-piece sectional delivered from the furniture store to my apartment. DALowe Movers were at the furniture store before me lol. They were super quick, efficient and very affordable. The owner is really personable and committed to providing exemplary customer service. As they were heading out, I made sure to let them know that I have to furnish two additional rooms in my apartment, plus have some desks, wall mounts and possibly a couple of storage units assembled, so they should be on the lookout for me to hire them again, very soon. DALowe Movers made a great first impression and did an overall excellent job!!!

Loved my experience with Taggabox! Movers notified me when they were on the way. Very helpful and kept a positive attitude, even we were surprised with a few extra flights of stairs at my new place. They communicated with me about where I wanted everything placed and were very careful not to damage anything. I would definitely use them again!

I had two fantastic movers. My problem came in with the fact I was promised three movers and a 26 foot truck. I received a 20 foot truck and two movers. I did not receive a call prior to the movers showing up informing me that the truck was smaller and there was only two men. Of course I paid for two men instead of three but the communication should have been priority. I had a big move and the two movers I had did a fantastic job. They were very professional and hard working. I did speak with their boss and he rectified the situation by taking money of my move, which I appreciate. Overall the move went as smooth as a move can go. I would use this company again. Their movers have good work ethics.

I cannot say enough great things anout Ronnie and his staff! They came early for the job, and were well-prepared to move my storage and repack furnishings that the last movers had done such a terrible job on. This team is one of the best I’ve ever worked with- they were courteous, and really hustled to get this done right! Ronnie did his best to give me a righteous deal on this move, and the care they took with my things was exemplary. I HIGHLY recommend RMLJ Movers, and if I could give them a 10 Star Rating, I would! Outstanding job, thanks so much RMLJ Enterprises!

From the moment I inquired about their rates, to their 1-hr advance notice arrival time, punctual arrival, and completion of the job they provided superior service! The movers were very professional, wrapped my furniture (without me even asking), and SUPER FAST! I’ve hired other movers through Thumbtack in the past and these movers were by far the absolute best. So much so that I plan to immediately hire them for another job. I will certainly utilize their services in the future as well and highly recommend them!

The customer service reps were very professional and responsive via phone or email. They were able to accommodate our move on very short notice. The only issue was with one of the movers arriving almost an hour late.

Aiken's movers did an amazing job! I needed help with moving a 10x10 storage unit and all of the contents of my condo into a larger condo here in town. Ronnie was very detailed and communicated promptly. They showed up 10 mins early and worked very hard and with care until the job was done. I would absolutely hire them again and do recommend them to my friends and family.

I wish I would have did the review sooner. Last August, we were moving across the country and needed to clean out the garage before the movers came. Brian came and went out of his way to pick up all load of junk and come back the next morning for an extra pickup. I was grateful!

I needed a last minute move and was struggling to find anyone who could fit me in. Thank God that they were able to get the job done and did an excellent job. One of the movers that particularly stood out was a guy named Gilbert. He made sure that his fellow coworkers were diligent and took great care of my property. I am picky when it comes to my things so if they can satisfy me I definitely would recommend them to anyone else. They made sure that all of my furniture was protected. They loaded and unloaded quickly. They were highly professional, placed my belongings exactly where I asked and even helped to assemble it back. I could not have asked for better service. I'll be using you guys again. Thanks so much!!

I had the most wonderful experience with Elite Movers. From the first start of communication and a hiccup on my end. Elite Movers worked with me throughout the whole time. Something happened and we had to move weekends to move last weekend and Elote Movers squeezed us end and went above and beyond for us. We are so thrilled to recommend them to everyone we know who will need to move! With a wonderful price, professional, and the speed of moving made the whole annoyance of moving more bearable :)

I needed a grand piano moved to my home. The window of time to get it loaded was narrow and Beavers accomdated my schedule. They arrived almost to the minute they promised and loaded, delivered and set up my piano at its new location professionally-without a hitch. Being my first experience with hiring a piano mover, I was very impressed with Mr. Beavers’ immediate responses to my texts and phone calls. I will use them again if I need a mover. Very nice professional men.

These guys were amazing! The movers originally booked for moving day cancelled 30 minutes before. We were able to find DKM, schedule the move for that same day at a fair price. Dealing with Phyllis to set it up was fantastic as she was compassionate and friendly. The movers that came out were very hard working, quick, polite and friendly. Highly recommend DKM movers for any moving needs!

This was my first time ever having to use movers and it was quiet an experience. Although I went over my time limit Anthony and his partner still worked with me on getting my stuff inside my new place. I don’t think I can honestly thank them enough for working with me the way that they did.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
