"We were married on 01/09/2015. Minister Forsh was great to work with. Our ceremony was small and very simple. He even took time to take some snapshots for us. We really appreciate him officiating our wedding. We will never forget our special day. "

"Kenneth was wonderful to work with! Upon meeting him he immediately put us at ease. He really felt like a family friend rather than someone we just met. We had a very informal ceremony and no wedding planner so he helped to guide us. I would highly recommend him for your wedding ceremony, you will not be disappointed! Thank you so much Kenneth! "

"Rich was very professional throughout the entire process. We were admittedly apprehensive about booking a minister through this service, yet Rick was beyond impressive. He put on a beautiful ceremony and made us a better couple during our counseling session. I definitely recommend Rick's services."

"Nicole was the perfect officiant for our wedding ceremony! She was responsive to contacts prior to the wedding. We elected to not have a rehearsal as we had a very small ceremony. We sent her our personalized script for our ceremony. She showed up on time to the venue. Nicole was a pleasure to work with and made sure that her role was one less thing we had to stress about the day of the wedding!"

"Patty Burgess was the most amazing, magical, warm, wonderful, and professional officiant my husband and I could have hoped for. We planned our Georgia wedding from New Mexico, and were concerned about finding a suitable officiant with whom we felt a genuine connection, as well as one we could afford! Through a Google search, we found Thumbtack, and Patty popped up as one of the officiants available for our date and location. What made Patty stand out right away was the rapidity of her response to our inquiries, as well as the sincerity and detailed nature of her responses. You felt like she was giving you all the time in the world, even before you had hired her or paid her a cent. Patty answered many questions via email, and was glad to have a lengthy conversation with my fiance and I by phone, in which she explained her approach to working with a couple to craft a unique ceremony that truly reflects their story and personalities. We came away from that conversation convinced that Patty was the one for us. She then sent us a treasure trove of sample components for us to consider and pull from as we crafted our ceremony. When we decided to involve friends in a dramatic performance as one of our "readings", and to have other friends play a song in place of a reading, Patty was 100% supportive. Two things that made her stand out even before our wedding day were, 1) She sent an extensive email with the contact info for the courthouse in the county where our wedding would be held, with instructions on how to obtain a marriage license, and details of how she would handle filing it for us; and 2) Patty insisted on meeting with us in person once prior to our wedding, at no additional charge, so that we could forge a personal connection that would be reflected throughout our eye contact and energy together during the ceremony. She was so warm and relaxed during our pre-wedding day meeting, and you could just tell that she genuinely loves not only officiating, but getting to know her couples and helping them pull of a totally unique ceremony on their big day. As for the wedding day itself, Patty had a wonderfully soulful, grounded, authoritative presence (like you would want from an ordained minister). She had a wonderfully articulate and easily audible speaking voice with a beautiful Virginia accent. And, she rolled like a champ with the curve balls, even folding them into the ceremony, like when our friend's 2-year-old son began to cry just as our friend walked forward to do a reading. Our friend ended up holding her son throughout the reading. While our friend sorted this out, with her son wailing, Patty said with a smile, "Well, you know, it's not a proper Southern wedding unless there's at least one crying child!" This got the whole crowd "on board", and everyone had a good laugh and showed their support for the mother of the crying child, and it actually made the reading more endearing. Patty remained calm and affirmative throughout this hiccup, and that made me respect her even more. You can tell that after 800+ weddings, she is simply unflappable. Finally, Patty had some time after our ceremony and was able to join us for the reception. My family and friends had so much fun talking to her and getting to know her. She felt like part of the family! Bottom line: Patty has loads of experience and just kind of thinks of everything in advance, and does everything she can to take worry and stress off of the bride and groom's plate, so that all the bride and groom have to do is show up, follow her cue, and look in her book when it's time to do vows, since she has everything there for you. She even gave us a printed, ribbon-tied copy of our ceremony as a keepsake right out of her book after the ceremony! And she filed our marriage license for us after signing it. She is a delight, and so incredibly good at what she does. I found her price to be an astonishing bargain, and could not more highly recommend her! Thank you, Patty, for making our ceremony so wonderful, memorable, and effortless!"

"I was little hesitant when I hired Thomas aka Josh through Thumbstack as he did not had any reviews. But I am glad I took the chance. Josh and his FIL George both were very respectful and professional in their work. They were at home for almost 10 hrs and even though it's little too soon to see how long the work will last, so far I am happy about all the work they have done. We have already recommended him to our neighbors. Good work guys, keep it up !! Hoping to work with you again in future."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
