Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

The company did a good job moving the table but they called on the day of the move and said they couldn’t do it that day and that I would need to wait until the next day.

The movers were professional and efficient. They wrapped all my furniture in blankets, then shrink wrapped. Everything was clean and undamaged. I will definitely hire them for my next move!

The movers were great, friendly, careful and fast, kudos! Unfortunately the furniture list was off and I moved the rest myself by choice instead of incurring more cost. The list had patio set/fire pit furniture in stead of two recliners and love seat and they were not set up to move my mechanical weight set of which did not get moved. I would still recommend them just make sure the list is correct.

Highly recommend. They don't waste your time and are very up front about pricing and what they offer. Arrived on time and worked very hard and fast. Moved everything safely, reassembled anything they had to disassemble for the move, and offered to arrange furniture how I wanted. They won't try to nickel and dime you or exploit you like a lot of the bigger corporate moving companies. If I ever need to move in the metro area again I won't waste any time looking anywhere else.

It was extremely easy to schedule my move with Next Door Relocaters. The movers did an exceptional job moving my items from a storage unit into my apartment. All of the furniture was wrapped and handled with TLC, only one 8x10 photo frame was broken during the move, which can easily be replaced! However, there are a few reasons I can not give this establishment a perfect 5 star rating. My first concern is the movers were not punctual. They arrived an hour after the scheduled start time. Secondly, I was told when I got the original quote that the estimate would be emailed to me, and it never was. After the completion of the move, I was told I would receive an email invoice with a complete break down of the costs. Unfortunately I had to call multiple times to request my receipt, before one was actually sent to me. I do recommend this company. However, I would like to see management address these concerns for a better customer experience in the future.

BEST MOVERS EVER!!! I can not recommend them highly enough! Paki was totally professional throughout every aspect of our move. He and his partner were very friendly and good humored. They even interacted with our grandson throughout the day. We really believe if you use any other movers, you have made a terrible mistake! Oh, their price was outstanding too! I highly recommend Paki and his team!!!

This was my 2nd move in the past 2 years. The previous move (with another company) was a nightmare, this one was perfect. Fairly priced, workers were careful and efficient (and good guys too). Everything was done as I asked in less time than estimated. Absolutely zero complaints.

The uniquely designed drawer pull for our chest of drawers was ripped off during move. They did not notify us of this. When I contacted the scheduled to see if they could at least find the drawer pull I never heard back from him. We later moved the dresser and the leg had been pulled off as well, and stick up under the dresser. Very disappointed in the customer service and response. The movers when they were working worked hard, but when you damage something you should work hard to make it right, and they did not.

Best moving experience by far! Thomas kept in close contact to let me know exactly when they would arrive. They moved my awful, heavy furniture with ease, packed the truck like tetras experts and took extraordinary care with my things. Incredible value for the hard work they did! Hire these guys!!!! You will NOT regret it! 😊

I was very impressed with Smooth Moves professionalism and value, but I decided to hire another vendor that I spoke with. It was simply a question of timing.

*TLDNR: Do not be fooled by their too good to be true prices. They are evasive to questions re: liability and are probably cutting corners somewhere. As a little bit of a background, I am moving soon from Georgia to Missouri with the Army (approx. 700miles). It was a shorter notice move so instead of having my stuff moved for free by the Army, I have to pay out of pocket all expenses and be reimbursed only a portion (up to $2,500 for the estimated weight of my belongings). So I was looking for a company to perform the long-distance move at a cost close to the only portion I’d be reimbursed, but still perform quality services (i.e. fast, friendly, no damage, no theft). I received a quote from Three Movers and a Truck and the price and details of the move seemed too good to be true. I wanted to go with them, but just need to tie a few loose ends. As a lawyer (and an army officer), I am trained to prepare for the worst case scenario. In fact, as a child, my mother was doing a long-distance move and had absolutely everything she owned stolen by a moving company and never recovered any of it. So I asked for the company before I committed whether I could get a contract with them laying out our agreement. I also asked them whether they carried any insurance and had a DOT number. Not only did they refuse to draw anything up in writing, they refused to answer my questions regarding liability insurance and their DOT number (which apparently they do not have one). They only sent an e-mail back deciding to decline their services due to my inquiry. As a lawyer, I can tell you this all is not a good sign and you should definitely always have a contract (not just when the Army REQUIRES one to move). I am appalled and disgusted at their behavior, especially towards a military servicemember. But this review is not just in spite of their unprofessional behavior, but to warn others regarding their either potential ill motives or just plain lazy and poor quality customer service.

We needed someone to move a piece of furniture without much notice and they responded quickly and worked us into their schedule. Will definitely use again as needed.
