Davilla did an excellent job on our landscape and hardscape project. They were very knowledgeable, communicated every step of the way, made adjustments as were needed through the course of the project and finished on time. I would definitely hire them again.

Overall I was satisfied with the work performed. They cleaned up behind themselves, they cut the branches to length and carted them to the curb for pick up. I was a little disappointed with their lack of communication. Unfortunately DJ&Gray had a bit of misfortune the week prior to the estimate and a day before the day of the job. Stuff happens... I get it and most folks will to if you just remember to communicate enough with the client what the impending issues might be. Punctuality is another critique I would mention needs improvement. I would hire them again, in fact I am considering them for a landscaping job. Everyone needs another chance.

Omar was THE BEST!!! He came out to me discuss a bad drainage issue and new sod installation and removal of bushes. He even came back a second time at my request to go back over everything w my SO. His pricing was fair and he was on time and very knowledgeable. He answered all our questions and included me in choices he was making as the Work was progressing instead of assuming how I’d like something. He didn’t take short cuts and was meticulous in his work. It was the first company in a long time I hired for anything hat I didn’t feel like I need to supervise their work. He installed a drainage system, timber retaining wall, new sod and mulch for us. He also removed many bushes, relocated some sprinkler heads and transplanted trees. Everything was done w great care and no shortcuts. You would be making a HUGE mistake to hire anyone else!!! Our neighbor put in new sod the month before and was so upset when she compared her lawn to ours. Her lawn was thrown down w lots of gaps and ours looked like a piece of carpet!!! Omar also made sure to get us very high quality Zosia. Omar is awesome and I fully recommend his company and service! We can’t wait to use our new yard!!!

I would like to say this was my first time using Thumtack. I was very surprised by the promptness and skillful delivery of the work provided by GENESIS HARDSCAPING AND LANDSCAPE. They came early left late throughout the project to complete it ahead of schedule. And when completed what i expected was surpassed by knowledge they brought o make the project even better than I imagined. There skill set isn't just landscaping but everything in between. My last contractors left a mess in my backyard, he came in recommended fixes in areas i thought he did not cover. he was a joy and very respectful to my Wife. It was a joy to have him work for me and i will continue to with him. I encourage anyone to please let him come and see what you need and you will be pleased by the results.

Working with Landscape Legends was a pleasure and concluded with an excellent upgrade to my landscape. Lamont was able to come by immediately after I submitted the request. Not only did he listen to why I wanted to do the project and provide expert advice on several options, he also spent time looking at some of my DIY yard projects and advising on how I could have given those projects a professional touch. He gave me this advice without charge. The project we embarked on was completed quickly and with quality. I look forward to working with Landscape Legends in the future.

Nelson offered the most visionary and comprehensive proposal from the beginning to let us see what he would do, not just a quote. While at the same time, he was open to incorporating our modifications. The scope was large and got larger, requiring several serious mid-course negotiations. But the result was spectacular, including a water bowl feature, paver patio, stone/stucco wall, and grass/shrubs/trees – all accented with landscape lighting. On the down side, the electrical, drainage, irrigation, and lighting (mostly done by subcontractors) had to be reworked and I did not like having to argue over me absorbing extra costs. The end result though is a stunning showcase for us now and we would highly recommend Nelson.

John and his team absolutely delivered on the project and exceeded our expectations!! Began the project with a fairly ambiguous and amorphous scope but a super tight deadline. Despite many design changes on our end, John and his team delivered the project exactly on time and with complete quality and attention to detail. If you are looking for a highly qualified, responsible, reasonable, capable and reliable landscape architect, look no further than Southern Cross Outdoors!

W&W Landscaping installed retaining walls, a paver patio with a fire pit & walkway leading to my pool. A year prior to that they did some landscaping in my front yard against the house and walkway. W&W did an outstanding job and completed all of the jobs in a very timely manner. I couldn't be more satisfied with their services they provided for me, that's why I called them to come back to my home for services to my backyard. The crew was very courteous, dependable and professional. I will definitely call on them again. Regards, Happy in McDonough

I was so depressed about my builder grade lawn and the erosion that occurred over the past 13 years. This company helped redesign my yard and restore my homes curb appeal and they fixed my drainage issues. They are knowledgeable, honest and experts. I am so proud to pull up into my driveway! Yup, she’s a pretty girl again! TREE CUTTING, LANDSCAPING & CONCRETE LIP.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
