Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do you move large pieces of furniture?

Moving large furniture can be done with help from the best movers in your area and careful planning. First, get an idea of how much the furniture weighs and how much each mover can manage. The next step is figuring out the path the furniture will take as it exits its point of origin and makes its way to its new home. Professional movers then use dollies, furniture protectors and personal safety gear for a safe, smooth move.

Our move went amazingly smooth, and I fully plan on using them if we move again within our area. Mike and Mike were amazingly professional and called almost an hour ahead to let us know they would be a little late (traffic around Savannah on Patty's Weekend). Upon arrival, they took great care to listen to where all of the boxes went and wrapped our furniture. They moved with an awesome hustle even after having already completed a job earlier in the day. They moved 3 tvs with no issue and nothing was broke in the move! Amazing experience! Thanks Elite

I contacted this company for movement of my large possession only. Because we are military and my husband is not in the country I needed the manpower to move certain large furniture. I wanted to be satisfied beyond a doubt with this moving company, unfortunately they made it impossible. The owner stresses his movers will have a nice smile on their faces. This was a NEGATIVE, no smile and not very pleasent. While trying to ignore the bad attitudes, it was impossible to ignore the fact that the agreed upon contract was not honored. I requested a 26 ft truck and was sent an 18 ft. truck. This complication caused the movers to make two trips. It was also hard to ignore the movers misplacing possession like the screws to dressers, the power outlet to our treadmill rendering it unusable and pieces to our bed causing the movers to act sneaky and throw the bars under the bed not completely assembling it back to its original form. After attempting to contact the owner to have someone come back and put my bed completely together, he would not respond to my calls. These actions are not honorable actions. Therefore in good conscious I cannot recommend this company to anyone. I cannot stress how much I really-really hate having to leave this type of review.

There are many things I would like to point out about this company, all of them positive. First, the movers that were sent loaded, and unloaded everything in my two bedroom apartment (only about 920 sqft, but I have a lot of stuff) in less than the 3 hour minimum. They traveled to my location in Hinesville, GA free of charge, something I haven't typically experienced. In addition, they were available to start my move the very same day I contacted them. On subject of the movers themselves, they worked quickly, did not stop to take breaks or any unnecessary or otherwise time consuming things. They were polite, smiling, and made conversation as they worked. They were attentive to the care and handling of all of my items, not just the expensive or fragile ones. Also, the company offered a "we break it, we buy it" kind of insurance in the event that any of my possessions were damaged, however unlikely that may have been. All in all, this is the best and most professional moving company I have ever dealt with. When they say moving with integrity, they mean it. I will use this company, and this company only as long as I live within their area of operation.

Mr Badie offered $250.00 to move me from one mobile to another 4 mobiles down. We had talked about maybe another $100 but that was not finalized. I had assumed that everything I owned would be moved, but Mr Badie was not happy about having to move my shed, but did, BUT also broke the doors on them. This was on the week of Feb 10th. The day they moved my stuff, I have a very heavy Armoire which they could not get it into one room so I asked them to put in another room "up against the wall" was left in the middle of the room( I am disabled), but my son and I managed to move it making my back problems worse. After they left, I went outside and found the doors to my shed on the ground, I tried to fix them but was not able. I called Mr Badie and he did show till a week later and tried but could not and said he would be back, I finally had to call to find out when and he said he would be here on Monday Mar 2nd, never heard from him. So today I msg him, "he called me back" and asked about it, he was not very nice about the whole thing saying he moved the Shed out of being nice, that he did not have to, then made the retort of saying I said I would pay the extra $100. One I totally forgot, since I was about to have a panic attack the day of the move, Two he never mentioned it till today. He also told me that if I post any negativity and that if I say I didnt say anything about the extra money he would sue me for defamation. He did say he would come back on Monday the 9th, but after this phone call from him, I did not want him around me with my panic attacks. So now my shed has doors on upside down and not complete. I understand he is a very busy man with his work and ministry, but am extremely upset and yes, before I posted this had another panic attack

I was very pleased with how the movers took there time and packed up and unpacked my stuff. I would have given a 5 star but they scratched up the trim a little and they were late. Other than that. The price was right and completed the task in a timely manner. Thanks.

I had a great experience with Savannah and Sons. I had a last minute move and they responded to my same-day inquiry very quickly. They were very detailed with their timeline, and were punctual, efficient, and professional. I’d definitely recommend them to anyone looking for quality work at an affordable price.

My experience with Honest and Dependable was just what the name says. They arrived before me and worked late making sure all of my items were boxed and loaded. They supplied material to pack my apartment up into boxes and keep it safe during transition. The next day they delivered my belongings across state safely and loaded it nice, safe, and neat as I was still in another state. The individual that unloaded my belongings sent me pictures of the finished product and I was able to pay online to make it easier for me. I would recommend Honest and Dependable for anyone looking to make a move local or long distance. If I am ever in need of moving services again, Hamilton and his crew will be my first call.

Everything he did was done great. He was on time, gave me updates, and did it very fast and accurate. I have been moved in and out of apartments quite a few times and this was by far the best experience I have ever had. I will be returning back to him for any of my handyman needs. He was also very flexible and understanding.

Moving from state to state was one the hardest challenges of my life recently. Mr. Chris was patient and understanding of everything that went wrong throughout the process. He was punctual, professional and even gave me encouraging words to help ease the worries! Mr. Chris and his associate had me packed and ready to go within an hour! I will definitely use Brothers n Movement for my next relocation!

The movers said they would be arriving at 5pm to start the packing and load, and didn’t show up until 10:30pm. They stayed til midnight and then came back in the morning at 8:30 and still took 5 more hours to complete a 2 bedroom apartment. Upon delivery I was informed I had to pay in cash or money order, which I was never informed of before then. The whole experience was so unprofessional, and Frank (the owner I assume), refused to give me a receipt after several requests.

There were 4 men that moved my household. 2 were personable, conscientious and polite, one was average, one was careless, indifferent and dropped, broke or scratched many things. Literally throwing boxes marked "fragile." He also purposely set a wood framed mirror in gravel, scratching one side extensively. An entire box of China and glassware was smashed to pieces, and 2 wooden nightstands were dropped off of a dolly and scratched and dented substantially. I didn't even get a simple apology!!! They were to unload 2 storage units, and deliver the contents to me in another state 12 hours away. They were instructed to leave the units unlocked when they unloaded them and to bring the locks and keys to the units to me, as I would obviously not be using them again. Instead, they locked the empty units, and failed to even return the keys!! I will now have to pay to have the locks cut off to avoid additional rental fees on the 2 units! I do not recommend this company. They are marginally cooperative initially, but once they have your money, they are completely uncooperative!
