Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I had an excellent experience with Larvell and Reggie at Power Up. Larvell provided a very quick and competitive quote, was able to schedule the work quickly, was informative and professional, and they did an excellent job with installing can lights and a ceiling fan hookup. I am happy to say that I found my new electrician!

Virgo Voltage is now our go-to electrician. We are so impressed with their work… starting with great communication all the way through the work and the follow-up. We’ve had them out twice already (switched out electrical panel, installed a new light and installed a new outlet) and have a list going for the next project. Thanks Terrence, you guys are wonderful! :)

I am very pleased by the service I received. Not only was the job done exactly how I wanted, but I trust what the electrician advises me. He wouldn’t recommend work that would just cost more but instead recommended what I needed. It was refreshing to have a contractor looking out for what was best for my home. We will definitely be using aria electrical again for future projects. He is very knowledgeable.

Julian responded within 10 minutes after requesting quotes from several electricians the evening prior. He was able to arrive the next afternoon and resolved a ceiling fan installation issue I was having in 15 minutes! He was extremely professional and my son also enjoyed watching him work. I highly recommended his services and will be a repeat customer the next time I need electrical assistance. Thank you Julian!

Abe not only did exceptional work at a fair price, he was very kind and professional. He made great suggestions and is obviously very knowledgeable about his craft. We are extremely pleased with how well he hung our light fixtures, especially the one in our foyer which has a 20 foot high ceiling. We will definitely use a2z again and highly recommend a2z to anyone in search of a highly skilled and professional electrician.

Highly unskilled and negligent electrical contractor who not only damaged our property but also did poor installation job. Passing cars or the neighbor’s dog constantly triggers the motion sensing light that he installed above the garage door. Any skilled electrician would test the detection zone after the installation and fine tune the setting to save the energy. He didn't plan the wiring route carefully for tapping into existing electrical wire, and ended up drilling holes through toilet drywall. See the enclosed picture. He damaged the weatherproof covers for the bulb during installation and told us that the covers were already damaged and he didn't notice the damage until he was ready to put them on. See the enclosed picture. He told me that he would take care of it and didn't show up for repair work on the day he promised.

I recently had Dexter come out to repair a decent mess up that another electrician had made. Dexter sourced and resolved the problem within an hour and really cleaned up the other persons work nicely. In the process, two outlets were disconnected and lost power, which I discovered after Dexter had left. As soon as I notified him, Dexter came out the next day and resolved the situation. Understandably frustrated, Dexter still did excellent work. He clearly takes pride in his craft and was very informative in explaining what was wrong and his resolution. Coming back the second day unplanned showed his commitment to his work and really showed me his character. I would definitely use Dexter again and cannot recommend him enough.

I recently bought a new construction house and needed some lighting updates as well as sconces put in. Chad came out to do this job. While he can replace existing lighting and ceiling fans. However, keep him away from adding new fixtures and lights. He broke my water line under the sink while drilling. This morning, I discovered that he also drilled into my brand new vanity and wall! The new sconces that he added while doing this do not turn on at the top of the stairs. You can only turn them on and off at the bottom of stairs. Safety Hazzard to say the least! Now, I have to get another electrician out to repair the damage that's been done. I'd like to add, if you don't know how to do a job properly, then say it. I have much more respect for contractors who don't fake it til you make it.
