Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How much does it cost to get a garage door fixed?

The national average for garage door repair cost is between $80 and $110. Some of the factors that affect your garage door repair cost are the type of springs (most often torsion or extension), the size and weight of the door, and the door material. Many garage door pros will charge a service fee to visit your house and determine the problem. Often, the service fee includes a set amount of labor. One example of this is an $80 service fee that includes the first hour of work plus testing and inspecting your garage door and garage door opener, while another pro may charge $150 for the same standard service call.

Broken or jammed springs are a common problem. In one example, the starting price for spring repair was $99, while another pro’s cost started at $185. The $185 starting price included $40 for transportation costs, $60 for parts, and $85 per hour of labor. Professionals may charge extra for late-night garage door repair emergencies.

Should I tip the garage door repairman?

It’s not expected that you tip garage door repairmen, and normally they’re not expecting a tip for their services. However, it’s always a kind gesture to tip for excellent and friendly service.

Is it dangerous to replace a garage door spring?

Yes, it can be dangerous to undertake a garage door spring repair yourself. Fixing it requires having a working knowledge of how a garage door works and understanding how the parts work. A door can fall on you, and loaded springs can suddenly release and hit you. For this reason, it’s recommended you call a pro to replace or fix your garage door spring.

How often do garage door springs break?

Garage door springs break every three to seven years, depending on its quality and condition. For example, rust and cold weather can shorten the lifespan of a torsion spring.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

This is your go to person for garage doors and door openers. He fixed my garage door opener that my tenant damaged. I couldn’t believe my tenant broke the door garage and didn’t say anything to me. John was very informative and explained what may have caused damage (side note: y’all already know my tenant claimed she didn’t break it and it magically broke). Anyway, John did an excellent job. Use this company for garage door repairs.

I hired Ben to repair my Garage Door that had recently started having issues. Ben was able to come out the same day I reached out to him. I contacted a few different companies and something about them gave me a bad feeling. But talking to Ben, I could tell right away he is someone I can trust and who will do quality work. Luckily, I was right. He did great work and was able to get my garage door working again. More importantly, he was trustworthy and showed that he cared about my situation. I would absolutely hire Ben again and I give my highest recommendation to anyone who is looking for garage door repairs.

Davin provided excellent customer service. He was very responsive from the moment I submitted the request via Thumbtack through follow up to confirm that I received the estimates he’d emailed. My spring broke and one of the panels separated from the rest of the door at the hinges. It was a mess! Davin promptly came right out to provide a free diagnostic same day. I was hoping for a quick repair but he gave his honest, expert opinion on the pros and cons of a repair vs replace and recommended the replacement. He even took the time to walk me through the various door options available. I really appreciated his professionalism! I was very impressed by his timely quote and delivery of door specs via email before even leaving my residence. I did not end up going with Hang Tite for my project, but there was nothing that Davin could have done better. My reasoning for going with another contractor was simply because that contractor was able to locate and install a door next day while (I’m told) the standard typical order time for a 2 side me steel door is 2 weeks. Since I didn’t feel that my home was secure, I needed a shorter turnaround time for resolution. Having said that, I would certainly give Davin and Hang Tite Garage Doors a call for garage door/ opener issues in the future and I certainly recommend this company!

My garage has been inoperable for about 4 months due to the fact that there was no real priority in getting the visibly broken spring repaired...until now. Now that it's lawn mowing season...the lawn mower absolutely must not be brought through the house, tracking grass and dirt everywhere. I put in a request on Thumbtack at 10:40 am, this morning and received a response within literally a minute. The response time was fast! Chris Turner from C&C Garage Door and Decks was just as quick, not only to reply but the job is done...and I'm still at work! He was awesome and professional. Price was remarkable in comparison to other companies. Not only would I recommend this company, my husband asked for cards to pass out to friends and family. A VERY satisfied customer. M. Adams
