Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does office cleaning cost?

Office cleaning costs an average of $200, but prices can range depending on the square footage. An office that’s 1,000 square feet or smaller costs $120 to clean. Meanwhile, spaces that range from 9,000-10,000 square feet cost $880, on average.

You can get a personalized cost estimate for your office or commercial space by contacting commercial cleaners near you.

How much does it cost to haul off junk?

The average cost to haul away junk is $150, though this price can be expected to vary between around $75 and $375, depending on several factors.

The first factor is the quantity of junk removed. Most junk removal services charge by the truckload, and most residential projects only require filling up part of a truckload.

Another factor is the type of junk. E-waste like computers and TVs may cost more to dispose of, as will more hazardous materials like mercury, paint and used motor oil. It also may cost more to remove big items like beds and couches.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

How do you prepare for junk removal?

To prepare for junk removal, start by listing all the items you should get rid of. Organize your list by which items are appropriate for the junk collection team and which may have some resale value or could be donated.

Move through your house and hit problem spots like closets, attics and basements. Make a pile of items you plan to keep, give away, sell, donate and have the junk removers pick up. Finally, contact at least three junk removal companies for price quotes.

Do you tip junk removal guys?

You may want to tip your junk removal team if they did an exceptional job. For instance, if they show up on time, are courteous and professional, take extra care not to damage your possessions and home, and leave a clean site afterwards, you may feel like giving them a tip. A reasonable tip might be $20 per crew member.

It’s also nice to tip them on especially hot days, or when the weather is inclement. You can also provide food and drinks for them.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Absolutely horrible and unreliable cleaners. On top of being unreliable they are LIARS. I called her in the morning of cleaning and she said she is coming early. I was happy when I called again around 11:30 to check why she was not there as yet she said got delayed and is on the way. Ultimately at 1pm I got a message saying she got hit by a car and has to take her employee for check up. I know she is saying lies and was never going to turn up. Hope customers understand this nature of this pro before booking their service. Better book their service and cancel just before they show up (incase if they do)

Asia, Kiki, and Chantal are phenomenal service providers! They were very prompt, friendly, professional, fun, and responsive to my requests. The result? I signed up for their bi-weekly schedule. If you want the best home cleaning experience, use J&Z!

Scheduled for biweekly cleanings. Paid for two cleanings up front First cleaning was adequate but master bath was overlooked and when reminded, it was quickly cleaned however corners in the shower which were clearly dirty were neglected and I had to clean them myself. Second cleaning came around and I had to reschedule due to a family loss. She rescheduled the following Thursday but never contacted me. The following day stated she had been in the ER and I have heard nothing from her or anyone in her service since despite many texts and messages. At this time she has been paid for two cleanings and only done one. Should arrangements for my refund be made I will update my review but until then I recommend staying away from this service.

Toni did an awesome job on the move out clean for my 3 bed 2 bath apartment. She was transparent with the price up front after being able to see the place as well. She even helped me take out some last minute items and trash since I'm in a boot right now after hurting my ankle being on the 2nd floor. I will definitely use her services again or refer others in the area.

Luis and Roberta were the first to respond to my project, quoted me under my budget, were very responsive and professional, and an absolute pleasure to hire. They showed up precisely when they said they would, and did an immaculate job, deep cleaning everything they said they would. They were thoughtful and careful with my home, and left it feeling sparkling and smelling refreshed and pleasant. My wife and I were thrilled with the results of their work, we'd definitely hire them again, and gladly recommend them to anyone needing their services.
