Our white lab went to training camp for two weeks. We've had two labs previously and never had issues with training, but our little guy (10 months) was a good boy, but silly and very strong willed. There were times where we were all feeling frustrated. I researched several dog training camps and one on one canine training in GA and felt a total peace with Oh Good Dog. We did the two week camp and Francis was wonderful. Our dog came back so much calmer, more assured of himself and was actually holding all of his commands. He played hard and worked efficiently while at camp. We were sent videos and photos which helped us make it without having him around. What I loved is that they take your dog on field trips and to the park so they learn to keep their commands in day to day distractions and learn to obey in different scenarios. When we did the end of training with Francis to see his progress, where we learned how to implement everything, we could all see how close Wyatt had become with Francis which made us so happy. I Highly recommend Oh Good Dog.

Within minutes of putting up my request on Thumbtack, Dawn responded with what ended up to be an amazing offer for training. I just received my dog back yesterday, and I can already see the results. She did a wonderful job and worked with him on everything I asked, and as of now, everything I have seen has been a success. She sends periodic updates while your dog is away just like she promises, and makes it much easier to leave your furry friends for the allotted time. Dawn went above and beyond in helping my dog and myself, and the training has transferred excellently. I would highly recommend this service to anyone trying to take the obedience of their dog to the next level with the amazing Off Leash training.

We started Pups to Pooches when our pup was about 12 weeks old, and went through (2) 6-week sessions of training. The training was easy to learn for both our dog and us, and Ann provided lots of feedback to make sure we were giving the proper cues. We received follow-up information via email to help reinforce all that was learned. Ann was in tune to the pups, and helped determine any issues that might arise and the best course of training based on the pups' personalities. Ann gives lots of personalized attention. This was by far the best dog training I've experienced with any of my dogs.

Loved that they worked with me in putting a custom program together to work with my budget. That was my biggest set back to get her trained. Getting the training my dog needs with a budget I can afford. I will do more training for advanced later on.

Sonja worked with our Husky, Zeke, for only a few months four years ago when he was a puppy. I've had a lot of dogs in my lifetime but this was the first time I hired a trainer. I thought I had always done alright training my own dogs but WOW was I wrong! Really, Sonja was training *me* more than my dog. Zeke is such a remarkably well-behaved dog. I added another puppy to my family last year and brought Sonja back to work with him. His personality is the complete opposite of Zeke's, so Sonja takes a different approach with him. She is a very caring and very effective trainer, I highly recommend her.

Awesome!!! It's very simple. Doron may be one of the best trainers I've come across. He doesn't only have great patience when it comes to training your puppy, he is also very thorough when it comes to informing you of the techniques and reasoning behind them. Will definitely suggest using his services or even just talking to him and getting a better understanding of your puppy.

I am in the best shape of my life as a result of training under the guidance of Awaken Performance Training’s Brandon Thomas. After training under Brandon’s expertise for over three years and nearly 55 years young, I feel as if I have found that elusive fountain of youth. I would definitely encourage anyone that wants to improve their quality of life to give him a try. He will make a difference in your life.

It's been an awesome experience working with Puppy Training 1 on 1 so far, we've done two private lessons with Jake and our golden retriever and couldn't be happier with the level of service we've gotten. Jake has been amazing, and we're seeing significant improvement in our puppy!

Working in Alpharetta and living in Midtown makes it difficult for me to give my 60 lb. dog the time and attention he needs throughout the day. Anita has been a great resource for our family. She makes sure Liam gets to burn off pent up energy, as well as provides affection before she leaves. I always get a picture of his smiling face, and that gives me the peace of mind that my furbaby is happy. I highly recommend her.

    About

I do teach puppies and older dogs not to jump unless commanded by their owners. I do use dog treats to keep the dog's attention span. I don't spray dogs with water because that will turn them to being aggressive. I am very patient with the animals.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
