Floyd did a great job repairing the rotted wood frame on our front door using PVC trim wood. He was able to locate and replaced new 10"window sidelites and installed new blinds. He attached an awning and handrail we had purchased, and his labor cost/pricing was reasonable for each project. He was reliable, hardworking, and listened to our concerns during the home repair. We would rehire him for future projects.

I had an outrageous quote to stain my deck and under pen deck with lattice from Mr. Handyman of South Lawrenceville, Snellville and Tucker for over $2K plus material cost of $495- I reached out to Tony the owner of TLC field services and he quoted be $952 for everything. He did an amazing job. I would highly recommend this company who does an honest days labor for a below average cost.

I needed a few tile backsplashes done. Chris and his partner came and looked at the space, were reasonable with their labor quote, purchased all the materials I requested and completed the job quickly. I was satisfied and will use them again soon for other jobs around the house.

Steve Gray is an outstanding carpenter, completely trust worthy Christian that takes his work very seriously. Steve refurbished a 900sq ft. deck for me some six months ago and my neighbors still compliment us when we’re outside, heck I’d have to say I smile each time I come home and see it. Steve came in completely under budget and the quality of the workmanship is unmatched and I know, I’ve used a few fly by night contractors before; Steve and his wife Tara are extremely pleasant and responsive. Two thumbs up for East Coast Construction. Steve’s coming back for a bay window and doors replacement, look forward to seeing him soon. Dan Meyers Jersey GA.

Jeremy was great, took care of two nagging problems at my house in a little more than an hour that probably would have taken me half the day; charged just one hours worth of labor, and left things clean and neat. Well worth the payment and will definitely use/recommend again.

Frame around the spatial board was pulling loose. David saw what the problem was and said that the debris from the shingles was causing the problem and recommended that the gutter needed to be cleaned to prevent this from happening again. He was very professional, friendly, and his labor was reasonable. I will use his services again if other problems surface.

Overall I am very pleased with the way my gate turned out. The only hiccup was when Keith came out he quoted me a price which I assumed was for labor and materials. Turns out it was for only labor. Yes it was stated on my quote, but everything was done on his mobile phone to process our transaction. I did not open the quote to review. We talked and it seemed great so I hired him. It has been a very rare event to have a contractor come to my house and only quote me labor and if they did, they specifically mentioned it to me while talking. I should have asked, but I felt like Keith should have stated it was for labor only. In the end Keith ate half the cost ($150 roughly) of the materials to make it right which was very much appreciated.

I hired Atlanta Construction Company on the recommendation of one of my neighbors who had them rebuild a deck for their high-rise condominium. Six months earlier I had hired a contractor to do renovations on my home, a project that was originally supposed to be done in 8 days. The previous contractor dropped off the face of the earth leaving projects unfinished or of poor quality. Skye Kincaid, the owner, and his chief contractor, Nestor, evaluated my projects and gave a fair quote breaking down both cost and labor. The work included painting and priming a bathroom, repairing drywall, custom fitting thresholds, installing, repairing and painting molding, sanding and repainting a shoddy paint job elsewhere in my home. They also solved a big headache installing automatic drawer slides and drawer fronts on my kitchen cabinet drawers. (The previous contractor didn't measure properly and the drawers were too close to open without removing the drawer fronts.) I am beyond happy with the end result. Nestor is a skilled craftsman, meticulous and precise. I'm especially satisfied with the custom fit of the molding. Best of all, the bulk of the projects were completed on one day. The drawer project was scheduled for second day pending shipment of the custom drawer fronts and slides. I finally can enjoy and have pride in my home. I only wish I had discovered Atlanta Construction before I embarked on my previous renovations. I will definitely call them fwhen I plan additional renovations.

Chris offers his clients excellent work quality, he is very professional, punctual and responsive. We have used Chris twice on projects in our home, the last being a complete kitchen remodel. He did an outstanding job. I could not have been happier. He will offer hints that will save customers money and he prices his labor fairly. He does not waste time or material. I have already got him set up to do a remodel on my main bath as my summer project next year. I would not consider hiring anyone else to remodel my house. I was very fortunate to find Chris and I highly recommend his services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
