Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

If you’re looking for a legitimate moving company that actually cares about the customer, Metro Moving is it! Hired them in a pinch a few weeks ago. Arrived early. Not one wall was dinged, not one piece of furniture was damaged, not one complaint was made. A dream of a move if that is possible! Easy to book online. Had to reschedule and got a real person on the phone- I was so surprised by this that it took me a minute to know what to do! I was treated very kindly and the rescheduling was done last minute with no issues. Anthony and his crew were very hardworking on a blazing hot day. They seemed to take great pride in making the move go smoothly and cleanly. Listened to my special requests and fulfilled them with the best of attitudes. I’ve already told a ton of people about this company. If you’re looking for movers that give a crap about your home and your stuff, look no further! Best money I’ve ever spent!

If you need someone to move your things quickly, book TRG. Booked these guys last minute to move my Fiancée. Mike, and his guys (Jhaleel & Rayshawn) are the real deal. They came viewed the stuff and went to work. They work real well, together. They communicated amongst themselves and with me throughout the move. They were very respectful. They did not damage any items. They make sure that they do not hit your walls are doorways. My fiancée moved out of a 1st floor apt to a 3rd floor apt 10 minutes away. We were done in a hour and half. The only reason I’m not rating TRG as 5 star is because they were a hour late. They should have alerted me that we’re going to be late, I had to reach out to them. They did give me a courtesy call when they were finally on their way. The workers themselves did apologize and explain, just think management or whoever book the jobs could reach out when they are running behind.

Unreliable and Unprofessional. We had scheduled for a move today at 10 AM, they told me they are delayed and will be at the location between 12 noon and 1 PM and that changed to be 4 PM. We were very accommodating to all their schedule changes, but that came to bite us at the back. We called them multiple times and no response to calls, no reply to text messages, and we had to send a cancelation message at 3.30 PM, again for which we never got a response. We wasted our entire day waiting for them and they are very unprofessional when it comes to communication. Be cautious, when you book them. They will take up multiple jobs on a given day and you are at their mercy. Use them as your last resort. Wish Thumbtack charges for cancellation and delay, if the business doesn't show up on time or causes considerable amount of delay. Please find other movers on Thumbtack. You have been warned. Update: Taylor, based on your comment. Why commit to date/time , if you already had a whole day move scheduled? It was not a last minute request, I made the request to move on March 7th. Again, if was last minute according to your note and if you don't work on Sunday's, why even make a commitment? I even texted you on Saturday (3/14) evening to confirm and you told me we are ON for moving on Sunday (3/15) (photo attached). If you had told me and been honest that you were trying to squeeze me in, I would have found other movers to help me. Your inability to communicate and coordinate cost me a day! Please take responsibility for your mistakes and accept what you did was wrong and try and not repeat it. For every person, to whom you have made a commitment to move, their move is important. They plan their day accordingly, and as part of running a business, it is only ethical to deliver on your commitment. This reply shows, you least care of customers needs and commitment made to them.

I was looking for a company to pick up and deliver an appliance at the last minute and was not having much luck; I had issues with either the date needed; the next day or the amount quoted for the job. I later saw reviews for Valcin's Moving Company and immediately contacted them. Valcin assured me that he would be able to fit me into his schedule the next day and his quote was very reasonable. I immediately booked the company and received a texted confirmation. The next day, Valcin texted me 2 hours prior and I confirmed location. They arrived promptly as expected and had the work completed within the hour. I was very happy with their prompt response and efficiency in getting this project completed with short notice. I really appreciated them and I would highly recommend this company to anyone needing help moving larger pieces of furniture or appliances.

Where do I start??? I had a 9:30-10:30 am appointment, but the movers did not arrive until 1:15pm due to a mix up. Once the movers arrived, they arrived in a 20 ft moving truck which did not fit all of my furniture. When I called the owner, he advised he told me that the truck was going to be 20 ft, which by the way was not discussed. It took 2 1/2 hours to load and unassembled the beds. Once they arrived to the final destination, they left the tools at the previous location to reassemble one of the beds. They waived the $40.00 fee for the mistake but I should not have been charged because the distance was 14 miles instead of 15. So disgusted and over it, I just paid the moving charge, although I have a bed that is not assembled and I had to come back for additional items that was not loaded in the truck. When I tried to call the owner, no response as indicated in previous reviews. I gave two stars because they did take on the job at the last minute and it was raining, but the service itself was not pleasant. Will not use again!

Stay away from Thomas R. He is very mean, rude and unprofessional. Here is what has happened between me and him: I contacted him through this web site. We agreed up on $95 per hour rate as I was moving from a third floor apartment to second floor apartment. We also agreed that he will provide all mattress cover and everything was set to go. This person called me up one night before and said, that he could bring three men and a truck with more money and I denied saying two men a truck is fine. Then he said, he will charge me for mattress cover, I said to him why are you telling me this one night before? We originally discussed that I have my own mattress cover but since you are bringing your covers, I packed my covers. Now one night before he argued with me but again I told him that now he needs to bring the covers since I already packed my covers and I do not have time to look for boxes. Then next morning, he texted me saying one of his guy got sick and reschedule for Monday where my lease was expired on that day. He put me and my family in a terrible situation. I contacted my attorney right away because last minute move would be very expensive and my lawyer said to me that save all Thumbtack and text as well as verbal conversation and we will take him to court. I let it go as I have several things to do. I texted him saying to stay the hell away from me and my family before I take any more legal action. PLEASE DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN, HE IS GREEDY ABOUT MONEY, VERY RUDE AND COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND PEOPLE LIKE HIM WHO PUT OTHER PEOPLE IN LAST MINUTE PROBLEM, SHOULD BE OUT OF BUSINESS. I CURSE THIS COMPANY TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS. Please do not hire him.
