Gavin did a great job on my garage door installation. I purchased the openers myself and let him install them. Although, he didn't show up in his scheduled time window due to another installation he repeatedly called me to keep me updated on his arrival. He also alerted me to a wire that was not working properly for one of the openers. He was able to add an extended wire so the opener would work. He also linked my car to the openers. I would definitely recommend this company.

Mr. Barnes was reasonable, prompt, explained everything that was going to be done, and did it all in a timely, professional manner. My garage door is a lot quieter than it was before the work was done. I am very pleased with the work I received, and would not hesitate to call Barnes Garage Door Services for any garage door repairs in the future. Thank you for everything.

Will was amazing ! He was extremely professional and knowledgable. After arriving at my home to do the consultation it was obvious that I had no idea what I was doing! Rather than seeing this as an opportunity to take advantage of a customer, will sat down with me and explained all of the options and prices to ensure I understood what I was getting! He finished the installation of my garage door in ONE DAY as promised . Will is the epitome of quality customer service. I wish I could provide more stars !

Everything about AAA was top notch. One of the best experiences I've had with ANY contractor/vendor for ANY project. Mark was punctual, responsive, extremely knowledgeable, fast, affordable, professional, and courteous. He was a straight-shooter and has to be one of the most experienced garage techs in Atlanta. I was genuinely impressed with his in-depth knowledge of all things garage door systems and he was a joy to work with. He replaced 2 old clunky garage door opener systems and installed 2 new complete systems (safety sensors, remotes, wall panels, keypads, the opener/motor, and the belt systems). Over the phone he told me the price and time it would take from start to finish (2 hours) and sure enough 2 hours after arriving (on time) he was finished. Everything was completed and all of the old equipment was cleaned up and out of sight (I didn't want any of the old junk parts). The bill at the end had no extra charges and was exactly what he told me up-front over the phone. Before calling Mark with AAA, our recent home inspection revealed that the old sensors on one of the doors were mounted in a dangerous manner that wouldn't protect small children (which we have) and we have been worried as our kids frequently play in and around the garage. I tried to fix it myself before calling Mark from AAA and I couldn't because there wasn't enough space to move the sensors to where they needed to be. Whoever installed the old system didn't care or lacked the creativity to properly configure the safety sensors but Mark from AAA cares about doing it right and found a solution without even being prompted by me. When Mark from AAA was wrapping up and walking me through everything, he told me he noticed that safety issue and showed me the creative way he installed the sensor on that one oddly spaced side. He went the extra mile because he truly cared and is a pro and now I have peace of mind knowing the kids are safe and everything is done right. He also walked me through how to maintain the system (which parts to lubricate and how often, etc.). As I understand it he's been doing this professionally his whole life and just branched out on his own a couple of years ago and with his talent and professionalism I can understand why! Definitely will hire again when we replace the actual garage doors and I look forward to working with him!! Thanks AAA!!

Mr. Baynes has been a contractor for me for numerous projects in my home. The scope and nature of the project work included entire interior and exterior painting of a 6800 sq. ft. home, deck restoration and painting, siding replacement, new construction of sunroom, power washing of house exterior and driveways, new appliance installations, wall and ceiling replacement after major water damage, carpet installation, tile refinishing in the bath area, painting of exterior rod iron fence and gates and widow re-sealing and re-glazing. While home improvement projects are inherently stressful for almost any homeowner, Mr. Baynes’s services as a contractor were invaluable, and I have been extremely pleased with the final result. Specifically, I would give Mr. Baynes top marks in the following areas: 1. Quality of work performed. The quality of work done was consistently. Mr. Baynes was knowledgeable, skilled, and competent in his respective trades. He was conscientious about all of the project specifications, and his work product rarely needed improvement or revision. 2. Quality of work. Mr. Baynes was professional, reliable, courteous, and respectful of my property and privacy. He had an old school work ethic (often 10-hour days, some Saturdays), good work habits, strong safety orientation, and emphasized getting the job done right rather than doing it fast. His pride in his work was evident. He tidied up at the end of each workday. I also found him to be trustworthy, and felt comfortable with allowing him access inside my home. 3. Project management and coordination. Mr. Baynes’s prior experience working in construction really paid off. He was knowledgeable about all aspects of my projects, and was able to plan, coordinate and manage the activities, effectively. 4. Integrity and professionalism. Throughout the projects, I was impressed with Mr. Baynes’s commitment to generating a top quality product, rather than maximizing his profit margin. 5. Effective communication. Mr. Baynes kept me closely informed of work schedules, delivery dates, and projected completion dates of different phases of the projects. His communication was always clear, informative, and helpful. 6. Flexibility and effectiveness in dealing with unexpected developments. When unforeseen problems surfaced (e.g., water damage behind a wall; he worked diligently with me to identify solutions that was acceptable to me. 7. Responsiveness to my needs and concerns. Mr. Baynes’s commitment to my satisfaction was evident in his actions. 8. Truth in advertising. In his proposal, Mr. Baynes gave a clear breakdown of costs for each facet of the projects. His contract was just as detailed in describing the work to be done and the itemized costs. When the project was completed, all the work was done as described and agreed upon, and there were no hidden costs, extra expenses or unpleasant surprises. As a homeowner and customer, I felt Ms. Baynes delivered exactly what he had promised, at the agreed upon price.

Jesse Bowen was delayed on another project and still came to work on my garage door today. I am so thankful for this because I am out on a work trip and wanted this done before I had to leave. Jesse not only took care of replacing the items I wanted replaced, he also made some adjustments going back to the original garage door opener installation. I will be definitely looking to Jesse again any time I have garage door issues.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

    • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
      • Without insulation: about $900
    • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
      • Without insulation: $550
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
      • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
    • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
    • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
    • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
    • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.
