Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

I spent hours trying to just get a videographer to answer the phone when I came across Greggo Lee films. Now I'm glad no one else answered. I needed a funeral filmed on somewhat short notice and it was no problem. Mr. Dukes was very responsive and had no problem when I needed him to contact the Reverend at the church prior to the ceremony. His attire was impeccable and him professionalism was on point. I couldn't have found a better videographer in Atlanta and would recommend him without a doubt!

I couldn't have been more clear about what I was trying to accomplish with the video from the event. I was speaking at a large conference and they were to capture the size and scope of the room. I told them in advance it would be a low light situation. Not only were they unprepared, they literally filmed the other videographers videotaping me! Why in the world would you tape the videographer taping tne person who is paying you??? I asked them to get testimonials from attendees as they left the session. They said, "no problem, we do that all the time" and instead of any useful testimonials I got footage of people leaving the session. Not only that, they positioned the camera facing a brick wall with a tray full of garbage in the background. Completely unaware of their surroundings. But the most frustrating part is that they kept moving around the room, the camera focusing in and out as they did. THEY STOPPED THE CAMERA AS THEY MOVED... so I don't have a single clip that I can use from the biggest speaking event of my career. I didn't think I had to tell a professional videographer to KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING... DON'T STOP. I've hired more than several videographers over the course of my career and have NEVER been more disappointed with the results than I have with this company.

It was a true pleasure working with Dustin. We will work together for many years to come. I have never been treated with such professionalism and respect. The quality of his work speaks for itself. If you have not hired Dustin you are hiring the wrong videographer. I approve this message!!!!

I had a wonderful experience with this videographer. He was well prepared and was equipped with everything I needed. I do wish that the videos he sent me captured more of the event, nonetheless I have more than enough footage to continue with what I need. I would use him again in future events.

The videographer from Edge of the Frame was excellent. On accepting his offer for my event, he made an appointment with me one day in advance to ensure that everything we agreed on would be done as smoothly as possible. I appreciated that. At the event he was well prepared, and produced a professional videotape of 3 math lectures. Some editing of the tape afterward was also very well done. An outstanding job!

We hired Daniel for videography for my sister's wedding. He did an outstanding job and went above and beyond his required work to make sure he captured all the big moments of the day right to the very end of the night. The video quality was very professional and the highlight video was great as well. I would definitely hire Daniel again and recommend him to friends in need of a videographer.

Filmed a kids summer camp musical theatre production (about 40 kids). I was freaking out because I forgot to hire a videographer with only two days until the performance! I Found this website and am glad I hired Randy. He was on time, professional and the final product was as good/better than the company we paid almost twice as much for last year. Used him again for a performance a few weeks after this and would use him again in the future!

I hosted an event last week and had a Videographer cancel on us 1 hour prior to our start time. After putting out a thumbtack project... Patrick immediately responded and accepted the job. He made it to our event in less than 45 minutes. Not only was he extremely easy to work with but he did amazing work! Our staff and clients loved him. Patrick is dependable, talented and a joy to be around. Thank you for all your hard work Patrick!

I hired Patrick about 3 days prior to my sister's show. My sister was performing at the Hard Rock Atlanta and I decided to hire a videographer for her show. Patrick did a wonderful job of keeping in contact and letting my sister and I review the footage before and after editing. He was also able to break down the full show and separate the songs into individual videos that we can use on YouTube and Facebook. We were very pleased with the finished product and his professionalism. Thank you again for your great work and will be looking to work with you in the future.

How was Patrick Thomas and his work? In a word Awesome! I hired Patrick to record a number of artists performing spoken word poetry. From start to finish, he was professional, easy to get along with making the video making process enjoyable for all involved and he understood the vision of what I wanted from the recordings. With his videographer and filmmaker background, he provided insight into what would deliver the best visuals for my project. It was apparent after watching him work, that the quality of work he provides, is just the surface of what he can do creatively. My final product surpassed my expectation, was completed and delivered before our agreed date. With my upcoming projects, do I plan to use Patrick Thomas? In a word—YES!!!!

Danny was AMAZING!!! He shot an intro video for me and my cousin's birthday party, as well as recorded our whole birthday party and created a 10-15min highlight video for us. His prices were very reasonable and included some much more then most others in his field. He was Extremely accomidating of me and cousin's hetic schedules and completely captured our vision well beyond expectation! Danny arrived early and always came prepared and ready to work. He met deadlines on time and was very thurough and detail oriented. I will definitely be using Danny for future projects and I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for a professional down to earth videographer who is going to give them nothing but high quality material!

If there was a 6th star I could rate, I would rate Chandler as 6 stars! Chandler filmed one of my magic shows in Atlanta and did a fantastic job. Looking through the footage, the colors and lighting were balanced perfectly and he even filmed the entire event, plus stuff before and after! In addition to his superior film and video skills, he worked as a professional not bothering me while I was setting up or performing, which is a huge deal for me. I've worked with videographers who nag me non-stop about "do you want x" and "Hey can you look and tell me what you think?" With Chandler I knew I could just tell him to film something great, and he pulled through. Would recommend.
