Kinga K. says, "Skye is absolutely amazing. I had my first EFT session with her today, and I am so happy that I was able to experiance that. She helped me to discover a deep healing in unexpected way. That was my first EFT session ever, and I didn't really know what to expect, but she explained everything step by step and took me through the process patently, and with full attention. During the session we were working on past trauma related to my dad, and I was amazed how emotions and my reactions were dynamically changing, and how calm I felt after the sesion. Really power method. I would love to recommend booking a session with Skye if you would like to experience healing on a really deep level in a safe environment. She is not only very professional and super nice as a person, but also a great and experienced leader - she exactly knew how to lead the session to help me achieve the best result, and I am really thankful for everything she done for me, and her time."See more

Raleigh D. says, "My daughter had the “yips” throwing in softball for over a year. She is committed to play in college and is a phenomenal player. She tried most everything we could think of, including a sports psychologist, to get rid of them. One session with Deb and she was cured! Literally back to her old self and confident in the field. Deb has followed up with us every week to make sure she was doing okay and see if we needed anything else! My daughter is the happiest I’ve seen her in a long time and ready for the college season to start!!! Deb has treated us like family and seems to genuinely care for my daughter as much as we do! I send her videos now showing her highlights!!!"See more

Great value

Patty S. says, "I would select ALL five items if the review system allowed: work quality, responsiveness, value, punctuality AND professionalism. Doug gifted me his care, guidance and companionship on my first official journey down memory lane into the distant past. I was so afraid of the unknown, of the value of a past life regression session, and of not knowing what to expect that I waited 8 years to have my first 1-1 PLR session ever. That seemly failed experienced at a group PLR session in 2016 certainly didn't help. When Doug's profile with PLR showed up on Thumbtack.com during my Google search for an ADHD/Bipolar therapist, despite my filter criteria of a zip code in Texas, I couldn't resist my logics any longer. I asked my mom, who doubts the value of PLR sessions but could read the faces of people to know their nature, to "vet" Doug for me. Doug's profile picture gave me a serene vibe, but I often imagine things wishfully, so I couldn't be sure. From a pool of 3 "hypnotists" , my mom picked Doug. Even though he was the only one with PLR in his profile and she believes what happened in the past needs to stay there, she still picked Doug. If all that's not "Yuan," I don't know what could be. In our session this afternoon, there were so many emotions, fragments and "duh" moments from my spiritual guide Erik. (Why Erik and not Eric? I met an Erik in Switzerland in 2013 whom and his family took me in as a stranger for a night. They fed me and sheltered me. They were the first people who help healed my faith in humans. Last year, I commissioned two pieces of digital artworks from a Spanish artist, whose name is also Erik. Why does a Spaniard have the name Erik, I don't know. I was intrigued but didn't want to intrude. Now, I have to ask.) There were so much energy coursing through my body under Doug's guidance. It felt like the Longevity practice I learned. But, it was different. I felt like I was lying under the daylight, the sky and the clouds. Although that was all in the privacy of my apartment. Sometimes, the light I sensed with my eye closed would be those heavenly beams that pierce through the clouds. Sometimes, the light dims as the clouds moved under them. As I prayed really hard to the light to engulf me once again to bring my scatted focus back into the world where I long for answers, the light under my eyelids would strength. It was magical. I was not asleep, although I thought I was. I was not 100% conscious either, because my brain and logic let out things I was withholding from Doug. I yelled the frustrations of my past selves. I cried their tears that their macho selves were too proud to shed. It kind of sucks that my female body has been shed a lot fo tears of me and for them. Yet again, who judges much when a female cries, even in public. But, our fathers and our sons still cannot do so freely in the MODERN world. Go figures. Backwards much, humans? Through our journey, I felt safe knowing that Doug was keeping an eye on me to make sure nothing strayed. I felt guided under his peaceful lead with his voice. I felt supported when Doug led my wandering mind and consciousness back to the deep space time and time again. Best currencies I've ever spent on a session, for any time spent with another human. Money is just a means to express my thanks to Doug. Like one treat to a delicious sushi Omakase. Well, if anyone reading this knows about Omakase, $150 per meal is extremely economical. What Doug has gifted me first- his guidance, sharing, care, unconditional love for a fellow human, teachings, flexibility with time, friendship and help- simply cannot be measured by any means. I've found some soul family members through my journeys in Asia, N. America and Europe. As time slips, the memories we shared remain fresh in my mind. Today, I am honored to meet another whose presence and companionship graces my soul. Except this time, we got to travel beyond the dimensions together. Thank you, Doug."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Tension headaches
  • Alopecia areata
  • Asthma
  • Phobias
  • Insomnia
  • Addictions
  • Bedwetting
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Labor and delivery
  • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
  • Stress
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Cancer-related pain
  • Weight loss
  • Eating disorders
  • Warts
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Smoking cessation

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
