Hector is just awesome. We had him do a TON of electrical work: new electrical z-wave switches (pain in the ass to install), installing an induction cooktop, installing a Toto bidet, demoing a countertop in the laundry room, etc, etc. Despite all the stuff we threw at him, he handled everything like a champ. This guy is punctual, professional, super easy to talk to, doesn't treat you poorly or talk down to you, and is just an overall great guy. I really respect the work Hector does. Definitely will be working again with him in the future. Thanks again!

We had Bryan and his crew guide us through our first major home remodel. 1200 sq ft town home. demo throughout, install tile floors, bathroom remodel, paint, and a few other things like adding doors, some electical, etc. Bryan was the first to respond, his crew was always on time or early, very professional and courteous. Never once did we feel worried about leaving his team unattended in our home. We were really impressed with the end result and we are really happy we went with him instead of someone else. Bryan is a super busy guy, so if he doesnt answer your call, he gets back to you ASAP. We were really nervous to take on such a large project, but they were able to keep us in budged and on our very strict timeline. I was also impressed with Bryans dedication to satisfy us, as with any large project on a 20-30 yr old home, there are unanticipated setbacks, again Bryan worked with us to meet our goals in time and under budget. We tried to save some money and paint the ceilings ouselves, but we wound up having one of his painters come in at the last minute and it looks top notch. Highly recommended! Skilled and professional workmanship. I think his workers are more like family rather than employees so it was good to have the local ohana touch as well. When we decide to install our windows we will get in touch with them again.

George did a great job painting our house, we got it sold within one week that it was on the market and had a number of compliments on the work that was done. He is also a great handy man who can do any trade that you need. Roof repair, flooring installation, electrical work, the man can do it all! I'll definitely use him again in the future for any of my listings that need some handy work done.

Mario has been more than great to work with. Would definitely hire him again for any home renovation project. We currently live in the mainland & had water damage to our house from a leak. Mario came in to do an estimate and was very upfront and honest about what needed to be done and the cost. His quote was a little more than a couple others we received but he was able to do EVERYTHING we needed an quickly. Flooring was replaced, cabinetry replaced, walls & ceilings redrywalled & painted. Mario was amazing at keeping us and our property manager in the loop and sent us progress pictures throughout the project. We absolutely love how everything turned out. We told Mario what we wanted and he didn't disappoint. He helped us find the products we were looking for on island and helped to keep us in our budget and pretty close to his original estimate. Being over 5,000 miles away and having your home flood is a huge stress, Mario was very understanding about our situation and had no problem working with us and our property manager to arrange things. He was definitely a huge relief. Thank you Mario!

Very knowledgeable in all home improvement needs. Fast and experienced to get work done in a timely manner. We were able to do tile in our entire home, including renovating our bathrooms and redoing our old tub to a large tile shower, replace windows and doors. Also relocated our kitchen sink from the middle countertop in our kitchen/living room space , sink now faces the window, and opened up the area to accommodate more room.

Andrew has many year's experience as a professional painter and also has excellent skills in home repair and remodeling. He is just finishing up a remodel for us which combined a lanai and bedroom to create a large office space and added a storage shed and a large closet with shelving in the garage. The job included carpentry, drywalling, installation of windows and doors, leveling the floor of the lanai with the bedroom floor, tiling, texturing and painting. We are delighted with the results! His price is very reasonable and he is thoroughly professional --a meticulous and well-equipped workman who is always punctual and cleans the work area completely at the end of each day.

Josh did an amazing job with the tile in our bathroom, it looks great! He was able to get everything done less than a week after I first contacted him which was amazing, other companies quoted 2 weeks before they could even start. Plus he had the best prices out of any other company. We will definitely be hiring him again to do the rest of our floors.

The job was to redo the inside of the house including removal of all ceiling popcorn, painting 3 bedrooms, upgrading electrical, enhance laundry area and painting, gutting and renovating kitchen & bar including replacing and adding new appliances, changing electrical, painting family room & living room and gutting garage and installing cabinetry, electrical, upgrading lighting and painting; installing new electrical fuse box. They came across a water leak in the laundry that had most likely been there since 1979 when the house was built. As a result the hot water flows at every faucet immediately which it had not ever done from before we moved in. They hauled all debris. Hawaii Custom Install management and personnel are extremely pleasant and competent and they subcontracted to dependable painters, electrician, plumber, movers/haulers, ceiling specialist, cabinetry carpenter--all to get the job done smoother and faster and resulted in employing wonderful small business entrepreneurs in the community. When the kitchen was done there was a leak in the roof that caused damage to the new kitchen ceiling and they fixed it once the roofers were done. For the first time since we moved in in 1986, we feel like we are living in a new house--a wonderful feeling.

I was very happy with Better Call Saul! I have used them on 2 separate occasions, first for my Granite counters in the kitchen, and then I had them build a deck covering my patio! The guys came out and got right to work, very professional, and very informative! Also, none of them smoke, which is a huge plus for us because we have allergies to almost everything! Lol We paid exactly what we were quoted, and I believe we should have paid more for the quality of work we received! Saul is a great guy and super fair! Thanks again guy's! Sincerely, Loretta Falco

As two busy professionals who have recently moved to Hawaii, we rarely find time to keep our house tidy. Lilli has been such an invaluable resource during our move. She always goes the extra mile in her services. Our house had finally started to feel like a home. Her rates are reasonable too.

Geoffrey Knapp is an accomplished professional finish carpenter who I have used on dozens of projects in both new and rehab construction over a period from 2009 thru 2015. He has remarkable skills installing crown molding, kitchen cabinets, wood and laminate flooring, hanging doors, window and door trim, base board installation and building custom cabinets. In addition to his finish carpentry expertise, he is an excellent painter, capable of prep and finish painting for both trim and interior walls. He is a perfectionist who applies a craftsmanship approach to all his work. I can recommend him without reservation. Bruce from Manoa

After building a brand new deluxe kitchen in our Kailua house we hired Ross and Ross to handle all phases of our complete North Shore beach house renovation project. From a gorgeous stainless steel cable deck with ipe wood, new rustic kitchen with acid stained concrete counter tops and custom teak cabinets, to a new deluxe master suite with custom built in bathroom cabinets, concrete floors, plumbing and a concrete and river walk stone walk-in double shower. What I like about working with Kevin is his creativity, flexibility, and attention to detail. As an accomplished woodcrafter, his other strength are in design, construction integrity, building knowledge and project continuity. He was fair in pricing but exceeded in workmanship. He managed his subs well and delivered beyond my expectations. I would highly reccomend Ross and Ross.

He is on time, hard working, and precise. Flooring is not only a job for him but a passion and you can tell from his long list of clientele and portfolio. I'll never call anyone else!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

        • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
        • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
          • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
        • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
          • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
        • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
          • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
        • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
          • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
          • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
          • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
            • Includes removal of the dura rock.
        • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

        • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
          • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
        • 620 square feet of maple floor:
          • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
          • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
            • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
