Even though we had a small wedding of about 60 guests in Loulu Palm estate, Norman made our wedding fun and lively. They went above and beyond by asking our guests (and going around the tables) to 'leaf their prints' and sign our 'words of advice' guestbook. That should have been our coordinator's job!!! Arrrgh... Anyway, these guys were amazing. They were hilarious, energetic, and made my wedding memorable. I highly recommend them!!! Hire them and you won't be sorry!

DJ Doc Jay came all the way from Hawaii to work his dynamic skills for my wedding in Florida. Everything he did to make our day memorable was greatly appreciated. He went above and beyond to keep our guests entertained at all time. He played the latest and the greatest hits on our day of celebration! If you're looking for a DJ with skills and the knowledge of how to entertain while using upbeat equipment , he is your man!

My bride and I really appreciated Lance's music at our wedding. A special surprise was his composing a song for us. Super Special! He was creative, on time (even ahead of schedule) and it was evident he put a considerable amount of time and effort into deciding on the best music for the occasion. We were not disappointed; on the contrary, Lance exceeded our expectations. We'd recommend him to anyone who needs an experienced and talented musician for their special event. Aloha!

We are a wedding planning company and have used Wendy for several years to provide music for weddings and vow renewals and she is always wonderful. A few months ago a client requested that she play a solo of The Lord's Prayer and she learned it in a few days. Her rendition was so heartfelt that it moved us all to tears including the 300 people who were watching on Facebook! We highly recommend her.

Awesome. We called him a day before and said we wanted to have a quick beach wedding. He made it happen. Thank you very much Kahu. Benny O.

I have 3, 4 and 5-piece bands that play all types of music for any and every occasion. We play standards, classic rock, rhythm and blues, funk, country and more. Call for a demo CD. We play primarily on Oahu but will travel if necessary. We all have 35+ years of experience and love to handle your requests.

We perform live music using two to 17 pieces in a variety of styles, featuring big-band sounds, swing and jazz for dancing and listening.

I will provide entertainment for weddings, parties, and clubs. I'll cater the musical styles from rock, pop, top forty, and jazz standards to your preference. I have over thirty years experience utilizing professional local and mainland artists.

I put kids together in bands for a peer based music learning program. They play music of today and yesterday of their choice and receive instruction on the specific parts. All levels are welcome! Our program builds self-esteem with peer connection and fun public performances. Each block period is 3 months with breaks in December, July and August for vacation and family periods. The course and performance are $500 per student and that includes 12 rehearsal and 1 dress rehearsal in a World Class Studio right here in Honolulu. Each block period has one performance in a quality venue in Honolulu.

I am an ordained minister, and I do Hawaiian wedding ceremonies and non-denominational ceremonies. I have been ordained in Maui since 2001. I am now residing in the island of O'ahu. I have also been a musician for weddings and conventions since 1980 in Maui.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
