I'm very happy with the work Andrei provided. Within two weeks of visiting my home and quoting the fireplace re-tiling, the job is done. Price was fair and results are great. I would definitely recommend Andrei for whatever tiling job is needed. He and his partner are prompt, courteous, professional, and clean.

Stayed home from work as I expected him. Calls me 30 mins to an hour before expected arrival and says he can’t come until next week. Need this to be done ASAP and now have to start all over with new contractors. Not happy primarily because I stayed home from work to accommodate his arrival.

I hired Jeff after a home inspection while selling my home. I needed to fix a few things I didn't even know needed fixing. This included changing the main water valve under the house to working in the attic venting the bathroom fan. I also had some exterior eaves that need replacement. Jeff know how to handle all the jobs. He did a great job addressing everything. He is very knowledgeable when I comes to home construction. I plan on calling Jeff when I move to my new home for any work needed.

BR Design came out within a day of contacting them. They were very professional, and pricing was reasonable. Our home remodel went great, and the small details that they recommended turned out better than expected. We are glad we did them. We have gotten many compliments from family and friends. I would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again BR Design!

Alumni Builders was an amazing company to work with on our home renovation. Dan was very professional and upfront with all costs, both expected and unexpected. He was thorough with our contract and allowed us to make changes along the way. He was in communication with us during the entire renovation and would let us know what the upcoming work would be as well as the name of who would be performing the work. We have a six month old at home and Dan was as accommodating as possible with his schedule & needs and understanding of my concerns (paint fumes, etc.) The quality of work was excellent and our basement has been transformed! I would absolutely recommend and rehire Alumni Builders for any future projects we might have.

Chris basically remodeled my whole house, without his great advice and precise work I would of been lost. He did my floors, stairs and trim, among other things. His quality of work and attention of detail is outstanding. I constantly get compliments on all the wood work and get asked for his info. Don't waste your time and hire Chris, you won't regret it.

I had the company design kitchen space for me. Elise is wonderful to work with. We are in the initial stages but they give good, prompt service. I am also having them do some design work for a small coffee bar in my home office.

I asked Roman to evaluate some structural questions in the home I recently purchased. I wanted him to put my mind at ease about integrity concerns and to assess the load bearing nature of a wall for an intended kitchen renovation. He and I quickly agreed to a time and price for his work and he was onsite the following day. Roman was punctual, gave honest straightforward answers and provided signed documentation supporting his review. He was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend him to anyone looking for similar help. -Eric

Chris designed our house and pole barn attachment. He has been readily available throughout the entire processes answering all our questions thoroughly. He has been patient with my husband and I as we tried to make mutual decisions. He has also been in contact with us during the building process. The house and pole barn aren't finished yet but I'm excited to see the final product.

David was a huge assest in partnering with me, building a custom home of my dreams. We built a 3400 sq. ft. ranch home in 2007 - Monee, IL with numerous upgrades. The project lasted about 8 months, would have been done sooner if it wasn't for weather delays. David kept the project on time and impressed me with his organization and total home building knowledge that I needed to finish on time and on budget. True testament to my home and David's skills are that after 8 years of living in my home, I still look forward going home everyday to a quality built home that has total usable living area! My experience with David was A+ with one word to define, professional. William Kosic

We have a small house in Riverside. It is about 1,000 sf. It is a split level modern house built in the 1950's. We wanted an open plan concept with a cathedral ceiling. We removed wall to new ceiling, creating an upstairs loft. The project was completed in 2001.We have lived in it for 16 years! We love the plan and the cathedral ceiling 16' high. Our room is now open 20'x24', with new skylights above the living room. Arlene was a terrific help. We got our plans on time during the design phase, and got our permits without any new work or any changes to our design. We have enjoyed our redesigned home for the past 11 years and would definitely recommend Arlene to our friends! -Keller Jobe

john managed a rather large remodel for my Naperville home. we put an addition on, remodeled the kitchen adding cherry 42" cabinets, granite and Corian counters. other work moved doorways, added 2 large family room windows, moved a slider to the kitchen, and did a lot of drywall work. it also entailed moving our electrical service and reconfiguring the deck. In my opinion, the job could not have gone better, or could we have gotten a better result! John found kitchen space where there was none and added tremendous guidance to the planning and scheduling stages. I can't say enough positive about uor experience!

Steve Vasilion designed a major addition and remodeling of our home. The design transformed our relatively plain little 1940 ranch into a uniquely beautiful and livable house. Steve did an amazing job of creating a house design that is both attractive and functional while efficiently using space. At the same time it fits extremely well into the landscape of our property. Steve's service encompassed all aspects of the project from concept and design detailing, through the bidding process until the construction was complete. He listened carefully to what we wanted and created a design that transformed our house in ways that we could never have imagined. He then followed through the whole project to ensure that his vision was faithfully expected by the contractor. This service was not inexpensive but we definitely got what you paid for and more.

Stonehenge contractors do terrific work for a very reasonable rate. Rory James & his team perform in a professional manner and their work is 1st class. They did a kitchen/breakfast room remodel for us that first involved the demo (removing all the old tile and cabinets), and then installed new tile, cabinets, dishwasher, some plumbing rework for a multiple sink design and then face brickwork installation behind our industrial kitchen stove. The job turned out better than we imagined and in less time than expected. Rory also installed a temporary kitchen counter-top and small sink so we have a functional kitchen until the granite counter-tops come in a few weeks. At that time Rory will come back to hook up the permanent sinks and install the back-splash tile. We will definitely use Stonehenge again when we remodel the master bathroom and also recommend them to anyone that is doing any type of home remodel/improvement project. John & Bonnie C. Lauren was great through our entire house renovation. I didn't comment on value as she worked with a renovation company at the time which included her services. She is thorough, prompt, professional, and her work is outstanding. There were many changes and she responded immediately with options. At a time which can be very stressful dealing with Lauren mitigated the stress. The picture below is our before photo. That is the entire kitchen. For reference the island is 2' x 4'. The pictures on Lauren's website of the kitchen with white cabinets and grey walls is mine. The second photo is the opposite side of the kitchen today.

We contacted Jacob to design our forever home in 2015 after purchasing acreage to build. We were slightly in a rush to get financing and start building in the spring, but didn't want to compromise on our list of wants. We had specific room arrangements and outside design elements we wanted and he listened to all of our requests. The 3D model walked us through the layout and helped us fine-tune the details. We couldn't be happier with Jacob's service and his attention to detail. On March 6 we celebrated our first year of living in our new home.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

Robert was a pleasure to work with. He was very organized, responsive, and professional. His workers were on time, pleasant, and very patient with both our kids and dog throughout our reno. We added two bathrooms, updated another bath, refinished our flooring, installed new windows throughout, removed an existing wall to open up the floor plan, updated the majority of light fixtures, installed a new front door, painted throughout the home, wallpapered, new inner doors and hardware throughout, removed A LOT of wood paneling, and did tile work in the kitchen. Throughout all of this - Robert and his crew were great. Only minor issues came up - one being a stain color for a door that I didn't like and the other was that the flooring wasn't drying as quickly as to be expected. We would definitely use iRenovate again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
