Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Rudy was incredible to work with. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone! He is hard working and very attentive to detail. We hired him to paint nearly our entire house and he did an amazing job. He was honest, and after painting 2 coats on a dark color, shared he believed a room needed a third coat of paint. He did not skimp to save time anywhere. He focused on the job and made sure he did it perfectly. We are very impressed. His work was incredible and he is so affordable. If we ever need our remaining 2 rooms painted (or our kitchen cabinets) we will be calling Rudy without a doubt.

Should be a way to put zero stars. I am very disappointed in the quality of work they provided and the mess they left me. I have door trim that should be white and its the color of the wall. Top of bathroom door above trim still white because they completely missed it. I have the paint from hall wall bleeding into the living room. They painted my chair rail blue, instead of white, when i mentioned it they painted white over it but only one coat so you can still see blue. After finding all these mistakes I started moving furniture and appliances, yep some areas only one coat of paint others not painted at all. Lastly contract stated all base board would be caulked, none was caulked. I am sure I am missing some stuff too. Sloppy and lazy. Now lets talk about the mess. Contract clearly includes clean up. My brown laminate floor is a cloudy white color with all the paint dust from sanding. Once I got that all cleaned up I found paint spots all over the floor. Also have green paint on my white kitchen cabinets. Now for the bathrooms. I just replaced all toilets, Vanities, Sinks, Mirrors, faucets, and all hardware. Everything had paint spots and tons of paint dust everywhere. The boss promised a final walk thru with me. But then said he could not make it and asks me to make final payment to painter. I refused, demanded the final walk thru with him. He came agreed it was not acceptable. I said I wanted someone back here to fix and clean up the mess. He said all his crews were busy and it would be a few weeks before anyone could come back and offered a $200 discount. I said I didn't want a discount I wanted the job done correctly and all the paint cleaned off my stuff. We finally agreed on $400 off so I could hire a cleaning crew and someone to fix all their mess ups.

We needed 4 rooms painted and some drywall repair done. Andrew was very responsive and was able to meet with us and provide a quote very quickly. Once we approved the quote he was able to start working in a couple of days. It only took a couple of days to finish and the quality of the repair and painting are excellent.

I took a month to reflect on how I felt the job came out: it Was average work at best. 1. Work sequencing: the deal was to paint my ceiling first for me to get an idea if the new patches would blend in. But my ceiling was painted at the very end, by which point, I was just happy to get the

I called Mikey for an estimate on Tuesday and by the middle of the day on Thursday the work was done. I had two rooms with vaulted ceilings and significant settlement cracks and nail pops painted. Mikey was punctual, professional, and reasonably priced. Mikey's lines were straight and his painting was neat. There were a few spots that were overlooked or not done to my satisfaction but everything was corrected immediately without complaint. I am planning to hire Mikey again later in the summer to paint the rest of my townhouse as soon as my children go back to college.

I have nothing but great things to say about Brothers Painting. My house needed a lot of work on the drywall before the painting could begin. From holes to nail pops and everything in between. The amazing guys from Brothers Painting were able to take care of all of those problems without any hesitation. They were always open to feedback and made sure everything was well communicated so we were all on the same page as the work went forward. They were always punctual in their time and made sure that the project was given high priority. The quality of their work was truly spectacular and I was in awe of how beautiful my walls looked after they were done. I’ll be sure to recommend them to all of my friends and relatives that need painting done in their house.

As far as painting goes, Mickey and his team did a great job. When he came to the house to quote, he mentioned he was quoting high because it included removing wallpaper as well for 3 larger bedrooms. It ended up being more work than he originally thought and he needed even more money. Also cleanliness was a priority because floors were just redone. They did a good job of keeping paint off the floor but there was leftover dust everywhere as well as tape on some frames. The last day seems like they may have rushed compared to the other days. Although the cleanliness was average to good and the price was high, I can only say good things about the painting and wall repairs/patches. They did a good job with that and the 3 people who painted (Mickey included) were all nice and professional.

Rudy was very communicative, priced fair, and worked hard with no supervision needed. We walked the space, he asked questions I hadn't even thought about, educated me since paint isn't my area, and helped me make some final decisions. There was no attempt to up sale or change our terms like some service providers try to do. I have recommended Rudy to anyone who says they need something painted. My pictures don't do it justice. We had crown molding installed and they went crazy with the nail gun. We tried to fill the holes on our own and paint, but it was so tedious. Rudy flew through it, then primed and painted the space, and left the space clean as when he arrived. Work done: walls, crown molding, baseboards, and column in a basement.

I hired Colleen and Brandon to paint my condo. They were very responsive, arrived on time and finished the job within the estimated timeframe. The paint looks great. The walls don't have any bubbling and the lines are clean between the walls, trim, down molding and ceiling. Upon finishing, they offered to come back if I notice anything that was missed. I would highly recommend them and would hire them in the future!

Erick helped my mom with patching and painting several walls on the main floor of their home. He was personable, professional and gave her lots of good suggestions and advice. He was able to reschedule to an earlier date and gave her a great rate and told her exactly how much paint she needed. She's very delighted and will happily hire him again and recommend him to others. (Will update review with pictures soon.)

Samy did an excellent job finishing my cabinets! They were oak color and he painted them white and they look like cabinets that were made in factory for first time ! His workmanship is superb and the crew of 3 really do a great job and seem like they like what they do! He painted my center island a cooled blue color which I picked and it was kind of tricky with all the moldings we added to center island and it turned out exactly as I wanted and it was gorgeous! He actually started right away and finished on time as we had already scheduled a party on Saturday and he finished on Friday like he promised! Everyone at party marveled at my cabinets! I would pick him again to do any painting jobs in my home! He is punctual, hard working, and easy to get along with and is reasonably priced! He worked in our home so responsibly while we had to be at work! I recommend him without reservation for all your painting needs! He just finished our job 1 day ago !
