Tim arrived on time to help me with my kitchen sink not draining. He quickly located the problem and explained to me what he could do to remedy the problem. He was very thorough, clean and efficient and I will use him again for annual maintenance of my plumbing. He also warranted his work.

Our plumbing job turned into a nightmare of one thing leading to another, clearly due to the original plumbers installation errors many years ago. Tim had a number of good suggestions on how to resolve the problems and stuck with it until he cleanly resolved everything to our complete satisfaction..

Turned out to be a much harder than anticipated sink replacement. New sink was 1" deeper and impacted the fit, as well as the plumbing. Ron made a couple of trips to the hardware store for parts and figured out a great solution to pull everything together. Will definitely hire him again!

I needed one of my outdoor faucet’s/spicket’s that was leaking, replaced. These guys are the professionals that you want! I received about 7 responses, only a couple were really serious about following through on doing the job on over the weekend. Gino, was responsive and had a couple of questions for me and asked me to provide a couple additional photos (which I did). We had a clear understanding of the job to be done, we agreed on the price (I can honestly tell you, it was a great value with great quality). He and his partner arrived, put on their show protectors and went to work. They were fast, didn’t try to sell me on additional work and completed it fast, on a very late afternoon/early evening Saturday. Don’t look any further, these are the guys you want to do your job. The first two photos are before they started and the last two are after they completed the job. You can see that they added an inline shutoff valve, which I asked them to install when they started the job, which they had no problem doing and I was willing to incur the additional cost, which was reasonable. I will definitely use them for my next plumbing job, no question about it!

The experience started with Brady being right on time, and just got better from there. He knew exactly what had to be done, completed the repairs in a timely manner, and at a very fair price. He doesn't change you $100 just to walk in your front door, like many bigger companies do. And he did both plumbing and electrical repairs while he was here. He will be my "go to" guy for all my future plumbing and electrical needs.

After my very unfortunate experience with Ludwig Plumbing out of Lake in the Hills who could not complete this job in 5 weeks and never returned any of my calls, I was very pleased with JDM. Dave came out the same day and completed the work very quickly. He was polite, knowledgeable and good and I highly recommend him for almost any kind of handy man service as well as plumbing.

Chris came out to diagnosis our plumbing problem right away. He then ordered the part and returned to fix it when he said he would. That's the key words...'returned to fix it when he said he would.' Too often contractors make promises and then don't deliver. Chris was not only timely he was always friendly and easy to work with. We will definitely hire Chris again for future plumbing issues.

I hired Chris to install an AO Smith Power Vent 50 gallon water heater. Chris arrived at our scheduled time and assisted with wheeling the water heater to my basement. After determining and collecting the neccesary plumbing parts. Chris completed the install perfectly in a timely proffesional manner and even hauled off the old heater. Very resonable price for a job well don. I plan on using Chris for any future house repairs and remodeling services. Highly Recommended.

Our house is an older construction and Mark demonstrated his expertise through his understanding of typical issues with houses of this age. Hands down best experience I’ve had on Thumbtack. If you’re looking for guys to do an unreal job and do it right the first time. These are your guys. Just moved back to Chicago bought a new place. And needed a new kitchen sink and disposal put in. I went out bought both and had them ready. Posted my add on here and they responded within the hour with a personal response and could do it the next morning on my schedule. They came out.... The sink was the wrong size for the lower cabinet but correct size for opening. They left and said to go out take my time. Return it. And to pick out one that will work for me that I’ll like. Gave me the measurements and suggested a few places. Great guys. Went out bought one brought it back. Texted the guys. They were at another job and once they finished, came back and stayed till 8pm to finish my job and make sure I had a working kitchen. And then on top of it all. Didn’t charge me a dime more than what they quoted me even though they had to come back a second time. I’m using these guys for new plumbing in my bathroom and to install the walk in shower along with new laminate floors for my whole place as well in a couple weeks. Gave me a quote that was perfect for my budget and I don’t want to look anywhere else. I trust these guys, (which doesn’t come easy for me) I’m prior service military, and couldn’t have felt more comfortable from meeting them with a smile and handshake. Even my dog laid on Salvos chest while he was installing the sink. And Salvo went one handed to do the work and pet my lab the whole time. Couldn’t be happier. Thanks gentleman. Can’t wait to see you guys soon.

Hose and Steven came over to install the kitchen Faucet, sink and the garbage disposal. They did a very good job with it. There was an issue where the dishwasher drain was leaking and they came over next day morning to fix the problem. There were some instances where they had to run to Home depot to get some required plumbing parts.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
