Emil, You and Aga did an incredible job with our wedding. We love showing our friends and family the many photos. Btw, thanks for touching up every single one! The video of the church ceremony looks like a scene from The Godfather. Truly unbelievable. You and Aga worked hard and it shows. The whole family gets watery eyes every time we... play it. Thank you again for being so kind, for your hard work and creativity, and for the rapid turn-around. I hope others use my post to help make their decision. Great job!

Where do I begin - well, let's just say that all my groomsmen and all of the bridesmaids that have yet to get married swore that they will be using Velvet Oaks for their weddings. The only problem will be booking them in time because of how great they are. Joe and the rest of his team are true professionals with amazing vision. Being the groom, I had enough to think about and didn't even think to worry about the videographers - luckily, I had the best ones around. From the start of our special day until the very end, we had a camera man following use to capture every moment we wanted captured. When we saw the trailer of our wedding video (I recommend you pay for it - well worth it), my wife and I were floored. We couldn't wait for the full video - when we saw the full video, we forgot how much took place and some stuff we didn't even get to see. Luckily it was beautifully captured. If you really need to, look around first and then chat with Velvet Oaks - but you'll be wasting your time talking to others as you will end up booking these guys. A+

Wow, I could not have asked for a better partner on my project than Isaiah! From the start, he was extremely professional, sincere and attentive. My project wasn't a huge one but he still gave it as much attention as if it were a 4-figure one and that is beyond appreciated. Technically, Isaiah created a work of art. I had a previous video created for me by another videographer/editor on Thumbtack and didn't have the best experience, technically. But Isaiah brought his A-game. Technically, creatively and professionally. He edited speedily and well, tweaked lighting and made all the clips flow nicely. He was a delight to work with, and I cannot recommend him more highly on every level. I'm definitely calling him as my looming next projects arise, and have already sent his name along to colleagues in the advertising field as a guy they want to entrust their work to. Thank you Isaiah!!

I had been working with Harry to prepare for filming our wedding this Friday. We set up a meeting three days before the wedding date at which he said we no longer need a contract and demanded the entire payment for the project up front. This was the first time I had heard of this and I was thrown off by how it came out of the blue. Nowhere in his e-mails, website, contract, or in any of our conversation did it come up that he requires payment up front. I told him I was willing to give half and he told me that "That's not how I do buisness." He said that people usually pay him when he shows up to do the job. I agreed and said I would pay him half and how and half the day of the job. He said "that's not how I do business." He said he was sure I could find someone else to work with and got up and walked out of the restaurant. I was stunned! He has not returned any of my calls, e-mails, or texts. He has the right to ask for whatever terms he wants, but he needs to make that clear up front or put it in the contract, not drop it into a conversation three day before the wedding and then walk out when I question him. It was especially weird in that it came right after telling me he doesn't need a contract. It felt very off to me. I was not comfortable paying him in full under the circumstances and I felt like I was being railroaded into a last-minute bait and switch. He was unwilling to talk about it, negotiate, or show any sign of professionalism or care. He walked out as soon as he didn't get his way. I am angry that I am three days out from my wedding and I have no videographer! I did not see this coming!

I can't say enough lovely things about All Corporate Video and Photo. Mike Kozuchowski was so fantastic to work with- I was looking for a last minute photographer for an event I was throwing only a few days before the event. Mike was nothing but professional, easy to work with and went above and beyond what was asked of him. I will definitely work with him again in the future, when another project comes up and I highly recommend to anyone that is looking for a photographer and or a videographer. Thanks Mike!

Ed was fantastic... I cannot recommend him enough - from the professionalism, to the creativity, time management, flexibility, and dedication to the project - he was flawless throughout the entire process. We had a lot of specifications and without hesitation he created solutions when presented with constraints. Ed delivered the final product a week ahead of schedule and exceeded expectations at every opportunity. Without a doubt, Ed will be my first call for all future projects. Ed is truly in a league of his own. A class act, incredible videographer, and brilliant team member - Ed is a master in his craft and Homesick Blues Productions is by far the best decision you can make for your film project.

We made a last minute decision to hire a videographer for a big birthday bash that would have many dignitaries in attendance. Eugene was hired. He attended my father's 80th birthday party at a posh downtown restaurant in Chicago so that he could create a video of the event, including lengthy speeches during a presentation. Also asked Eugene to record well wishes on video from the guests and create a shorter video montage. This involved approaching party attendees and recording them on the spot throughout the night, which took some initiative, and Eugene did this beautifully. Also created a highlight video of the overall party that was a great share on social media. Eugene really met the task of getting the footage I needed from this event beautifully. You only get one shot for live events! The 3 videos that were the outcome of this black tie event were well edited and very thoughtfully produced for us by Eugene. It's not just about recording the event, there was some artistry involved in deciding what to use, adding music and how to edit it all together. Eugene was very pleasant to work with and my entire family was pleased with his work. Thanks for capturing our special night so well.

My wife and I had the pleasure of having Stuart as our videographer for our wedding. The video could not have turned out better. He captures every great moment and it really makes you feel like you are there living it all over again. The quality and functionality are both fantastic as well. We can't thank Stuart enough for giving us something that will help us relive our special day forever!

David has been just fabulous. He made himself available short notice for a shoot on a Saturday, which was great. He is great at communication, too - always gets back to you very quickly and when we requested small changes to the finished product he obliged promptly. I would recommend David to anyone looking for a talented and responsive videographer.

We recently married and were fortunate to have Karen and Larry videotape and edit our wedding. Not only are they nice people, they are also very talented videographers. They worked well with the wedding coordinator, photographers, DJ, the wedding party and the guests. They worked ALL day and everyone was impressed with their laid back style and professionalism. Although we wanted to see the video as soon as possible, Karen and Larry assured us that it would be better to wait until after they did the majority of the editing. They were right and the video is something special that we will enjoy and pass on to our children and grandchildren to enjoy. We cannot thank them enough for this beautiful wedding video!

This specific project was quite intense. It involves all day shooting and running around from a larger event to an exterior interview room. Sam, from White Fox Cinema, did a tremendous job. He was punctual to start the day and came extremely prepared. We've done a series of these videos and I could tell he watched our previous work in order to understand the type of shots we were looking for. Finding a freelance videographer to fill in on an already established production is not easy, like hiring a new employee, but we feel very lucky to have come across White Fox Cinema. We recommend White Fox for any job and we'll be doing business with him in the future.

They are the absolute best! We had originally hired a videographer for our daughter's wedding through a third-party that arranged it (one of their friends I assume), and that person cancelled a few days before asking for more money to do it (three times the original price) as they said they had another job that paid more! We didn't reserve a year in advance to get a bait and switch, so we said no and called a dozen companies. Erin at vidart answered, said they could do it last minute to replace the person we originally hired, and then not one, but two videographers showed up an hour before they were supposed to be there, talked with everyone about the shots they wanted, and they just did a wonderful job. They also included a free virtual reality camera we were able to set up for vows, dances, and so on, it was tiny on a camera thing but no one even realized it was there, but my son-in-law is now showing everyone that couldn't make the wedding the wedding through some thing he uses with his phone but it is very cool as when you put it on, it is like you are actually there, looking around the room, and my daughter was so happy about it as it recorded the night as a living memory! The wedding turned out perfect too, and thank you vidart for showing up at the last minute to replace the person we hired. You did a great job and although I don't have any more daughters getting married, will recommend you to friends that do. Thanks again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
