What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

I've been training with John for nearly 2 months now and my only regret is that I did not start earlier. I've seen a lot of progress so far and John has been very helpful. He is knowledgeable, friendly and his punctuality is commendable. What I like the most is that the sessions are not repetitive. John shows me new exercises and variations every other week. I would highly recommend training with MOR Athletic.

Shawn is truly a professional that loves what he does. This was my first time ever going to a trainer, and I had no idea what to expect. Within the first few minutes my mind was put to ease while discussing my goals with Shawn, and he was able to confidentially and realisticly explain to me how we were going to reach it. One of the things I like best about training with Shawn is that he clearly explains every exercise I am doing and why. When you are taught the correct way to do something and the benefits of why you are doing a certain exercise it gives you drive and determination to work your best at it. It amazes me that each session I work harder and accomplish more than I ever have could expected.

I interviewed a number of personal trainers before selecting Shawn. I would strongly recommend him. He has been great to work with, providing good direction and ensuring I understand the correct way to perform exercises so I do not injure myself, while working me hard, without having significant pain the following day. After years of exercising on my own with free weights, i find that this has been a much better experience, and can see improvements in my overall strength and health as a result of Shawn's superior knowledge and guidance.

My husband and I have been working with 2 of Ken's personal trainers and so far we have been extremely happy with both of them. They always arrive on time and tailor the workouts to our needs and fitness levels. Each week the workout is a bit different and we are always learning new ways to optimize our routine when we exercise alone. Each of the trainers has their own style, and the styles complement each other. For this reason, we like to alternate between the trainers. It is a pleasure to work with both of them as they are both very knowledgeable and cognizant of how to avoid strain or injury. I would highly recommend Ken and his team.

Nick was extremely helpful in creating an exercise program tailored to meet my fitness goals. Previously, I didn't have a lot of experience with weight training and Nick has taught me proper form and given me the confidence to work with weights. He's very motivating and has a positive attitude. I would highly recommend his expertise to anyone looking to get in shape!

I have been having exceptional experience with my trainer Mike Blaze. He is exceptionally professional , punctual, and patient. I am working with Mike to get my run time to 16 minutes for 2 miles and he is not only making me work towards it but also have inculcated really good healthy habits within me. Healthy eating and exercising regularly have been incorporated within my lifestyle. My running form was extremely bad but with his drills, I can sense an easiness while running that I didn't have before. I will recommend Mike to anyone who is trying to get into exercising or want to improve himself/herself.

I'm so glad I found Ashley! I love her workouts- they are always challenging and have interesting exercises. She's great to work with 1:1 and has is really helping me work on my form. Additionally, her workout programs are so customized. I have had trainers in the past and felt like I was getting a generic whole body workout, but with Ashley, I really feel like my unique desires and former injuries are being used to create a truly custom program. Lastly, I love how her programs come with really helpful video demos for all the exercises, but that if I ever have a questions shes always so responsiveness and helpful.

This review is after an initial discussion meeting and the first workout session. Diarmuid is a patient, thorough, encouraging instructor. As I performed each exercise he demonstrated or described, he complimented the parts I did correctly, then worked with me (repeatedly on some moves) to get the other parts correct as well, until I was able to do all or most of the reps without mistakes. Diarmuid not only showed concern about my health during the workout session and the initial conversation, but also in his follow up. He created and sent tracking charts, then discussed modifications after observing my ability levels for the various exercises. Although it took me a long time to decide to work with a personal trainer, Diarmuid has made me happy I finally made this decision.

Being a novice in gym workouts, I decided to take help of fitness trainer, Tyrone Walton. I have attended a total of 5 early morning sessions with him till now and all of them are really helpful. He is extremely knowledgeable and has guided me through the exercises during the sessions. We do have light friendly conversations during the sessions which make them even more effective. The gym itself is very clean and rarely crowded. Also, I find workouts to be appropriate to my level of fitness. Tyrone has a very sound strategy to slowly pace yourself to muscle building. In a nutshell, I will highly recommend Tyrone's fruitful personal training sessions to others and I myself is excited to keep working out with him.

Diarmuid is much more than just a trainer: he is a holistic life coach, helping to structure good habits around the core aspects of health: diet, exercise, sleep, and mindfulness. I have worked with Diarmuid in all of these areas, particularly in the areas of exercise and diet. As a physical trainer, Diarmuid is excellent. He builds great workouts that can be quite challenging (but not so demanding that you can't possibly do them). He's a great teacher when it comes to technique, and is very encouraging of success. I have gained significant strength since I've been working with Diarmuid. He's a great dietician as well. We have structured meal plans together that have helped me be more mindful of what I eat. This has helped me increase intake of foods I should eat more of, less of foods I should eat less of, and in some cases less food overall. Diarmuid is a class-A professional. He has always been on-time, never late, very communicative, and very supportive. He provides a great service at a fair price. My health and wellness have improved significantly since I started working with Diarmuid. Worth the investment, full-stop!!

Chris is da man. I mean it. Personally, I don’t have much experience in fitness, much less a personal trainer. Chris is punctual, smart, and actually pretty funny. He has a good attitude and strong work ethic. Granted, all of that is truly needed because this man will certainly push you to your limits. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of having trainer is so they can teach you and that’s exactly what Chris does: showing you the ropes in doing the exercises properly; and I quote, “Any monkey can go around a gym and lift weights.” Even though I’ve only trained with him a little over a month now, I am already seeing the results. Change doesn’t happen overnight in major ways, but it does happen. On top of that, Chris is an all-out American with perspective and a sense of humor. There is no such thing as a dull session with this man, as he’s motivating and tough but fair and patient, especially for me since I’m a beginner. I would highly recommend him.

Shawn is a very knowledgeable and goal-oriented trainer. One thing that stands out is his passion for nutrition. He had me take pictures of my normal food intake, and quickly fashioned a meal plan that fit my weight goals and budget. When it comes to exercise, he observed my whole body and mobility, figuring out my strengths and weaknesses. In only 2 weeks, I feel stronger, lighter, and much healthier. I'm excited to continue working with Shawn for the long haul, and am confident that he will give me the push and information I need to reach my overall fitness goals.

I was doing high intensity interval training, which caused serious injuries to my knee and shoulder, so I wanted to get back into full body resistance training and cardio. After reading reviews, I chose Dan. It has been a wonderful ride ever since. He's very smart, thoughtful, and incredibly enthusiastic. He spends a great deal of time tracking your numbers so that there is genuine accountability as to the extent of your progress. After I saw the orthopedist about my shoulder and went to physical therapy, Dan took the recommended physical therapy exercises and integrated them directly into my workouts. Very creative; very cool. He's easy to communicate by text or email, and incredibly responsive. He's also very knowledgeable about the Chicago performing arts scene, which I enjoy discussing with him. Bottom line: I'm getting stronger; feeling more fit and confident; and not getting injured. Dan's been great.

I started training with Dan at HiFi Fitness for straightforward reasons. After 2 sedentary winters in Chicago, I had gained nearly 30 pounds while taking "time off the gym" to start my business. I was the heaviest I'd ever been and, even though I was an athlete by nature, I'd only dropped 10 pounds on my own and knew I needed help reaching my goals. That's when I started working with Dan. From the start, Dan emphasized that we were a team working toward my goals together and that the changes I wanted to see in my body required my commitment beyond the three hours we spent every week together. I like that he leverages technology to regularly measure daily progress. Every exercise is keyed in, and detailed notes for each movement goes into his iPad - and I can see my results behind a secure login website. We're only a few weeks into our regimen, but I already feel stronger, and my pants are starting to feel loose. Working with Dan is not just about making changes to your body though. It's also about learning the discipline of movement and having the mental focus to push past the limits you think you have. Dan is a meticulous technician when it comes to form. He isn't a trainer who will just show up and stand over you counting reps. Every movement is intentional and he'll make sure your form is right. He explains how those small tweaks make all the difference. He understands when to get in your face and when to take a softer approach, and he is as committed as I am in helping me reach my goals.

My husband and I are TTC and I wanted to strengthen my core and build nice strong muscles to help prepare my body to carry baby. The number of PT students (who are about to graduate, by the way) on staff helped push me over the edge. Konrad met up with me and was extremely nice and encouraging, never chastising me for my lack of working out just understanding where I am and what my goals are. I was impressed with how quickly Konrad identified issues that I would need to work on (e.g., I arch my back too much and over-extend my knees). My trainer is Mary Kay and she has been really nice and easy to work with. She challenges me but also really respects my body and always comes up with an alternative exercise if something just isn't feeling right for me. She is always prompt and comes prepared for our workouts. She really understands that my goal is to strengthen my body for pregnancy and just general health and wellness, not to become a body builder or athlete, and she really tailors her workouts accordingly. She is also very encouraging, accommodating, and accessible. I chose to have Mary Kay come over twice each week and I work out on my own once during the week. Mary Kay always sends me a workout to do on my solo day and she includes information on how to do everything (since I don't know my way around a gym quite yet). She also follows up to ask how I'm feeling after workouts, if anything needs to change, etc. Honestly, working out with Mary Kay has made something that used to be scary and intimidating a really fun and enjoyable activity that I look forward to. A one hour workout sounds so intimidating to someone who doesn't workout regularly but I am constantly surprised at how fast the time flies now.
