We were seeking Reiki services for our 13 yr old pup who was recently diagnosed with an illness. Our first appointment with Nicole sealed the deal for long-term services. While believing in the healing / well-being approach of Reiki – we were highly doubtful that our pup would be open to a stranger’s touch. He is a stoic German Shepherd and high-energy, especially with new people. Nicole was incredible in the patience taken to make him feel comfortable, following him to each room, making a new friend. Eventually, he gave in with Nicole by his side, putting him into a relax state of mind and deep sleep. I was surprised at this and my heart warmed to see another person connect with him on such a deep level. At the end of the Reiki session, my pup was refreshed and in fact, springed up like a younger version of himself. Nicole is a caring and thoughtful individual and definitely has the right healing touch. We look forward to making Nicole a regular part of Brutus’ life.

I am currently completing my 21 day cleanse after Reiki 1 with Bharat. It is refreshing to have met and work with such a professional. He is truly an expert and is very knowledgeable and passionate about all things about health and wellness. He is very welcoming and patient, which created a totally "judgement-free" environment. Within minutes of meeting Bharat, I was extremely comfortable to share some personal information about myself. He responded with genuine interest in me as a individual and encouraged me to trust in Reiki to change my life. I can't wait to take Reiki 2 and later complete the Reiki Master/ Teacher class with Bharat. :] I definitely recommend working with Bharat for anything health and wellness: Reiki, yoga, massage, meditation, etc. He will not disappoint and you won't regret it!!!

My experience with Lymphatic Drainage and Healing Touch performed by Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington I believe had a positive effect on reducing inflammation in my body. The few days after therapy I noticed less aches and pain in my muscles & joints. I hold a lot of stress related tension in my muscles, so it was great to have some relief. During the therapy Dr. Sylvia kept me informed with what she was doing and why she was doing it. I liked how she integrated different modalities along with the lymphatic draining. She incorporated some yoga stretching and breathing as well as healing touch techniques. On top of relieving some of my inflammatory muscle and joint pain, Dr.Sylvia found an inflamed lymph node under my arm. It was likely inflamed because I was feeling on the verge of a virus. She was able to drain the lymph node and we could no longer feel an inflamed lump under my arm. I believe this procedure helped me to beat the virus that never transpired. In addition to being a Certified Lymphatic Therapist, Dr. Sylvia has vast knowledge and expertise in the medical field as an Environmental Epidemiologist and Public Health Professional. She has the ability to treat a person holistically while helping them discover how their environment may be affecting their health issues. I would highly recommend Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington as a Nautropathic Doctor for Lymphatic Wellness.

In 2010 the tragic loss of our daughter left us barely able to breath, let alone function & process the grief and trauma. We struggled to find hope and healing for both ourselves & our 13 yr old son. After several years of working with different therapists to no avail, we met Dr. Davero. We found her expertise, empathy, respect & commitment far exceeded even the highest standards of patient care & treatment. Her ability to provide our family with the tools & understanding necessary to regain our footing in all aspects of our life is a testament to a doctor whose vast knowledge and expertise in many areas of mental health treatment is equal only to her compassion & devotion to those in her care.

I sought the help of Crystal Lake Reiki during a very stressful time in my life. I don't know anyone that has experienced reiki and wasn't sure what to expect. I was greeted warmly by the owner Erin, and brought into a very relaxing room, I thought I was going to get some kind of massage. I laid on a massage table, closed my eyes, precious energy stones were placed in my hands and at different points of my body. Erin explained that she uses a few different methods to help me release stored up negative energy and how that energy negatively impacts our mental, emotional and physical health. I was told I could share what I was experiencing throughout the session or just to relax. I choose to close my eyes and relax. I have had about 7 sessions and I feel so much less stressed and more in control of my emotional health. It took about 3 sessions for me to notice the subtle and gradual changes. I am now not bothered by the little things, I'm not stressing out about things I can't control. I usually fall into a deep sleep during my sessions and sometimes I can see the past hurts being let go. In many ways this feels like a massage for my soul. I still don't fully understand Reiki, but I am thankful for Erin and the peace her sessions have brought me. I recommend Crystal Lake Reiki to everyone ,if your feeling any physical, emotional or mental anguish it's worth trying for a few sessions.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
