Introduction: I believe in taking a multifaceted approach to learning. For example, in composition and music theory lessons, I make sure to address as many different aspects of the students' work as possible, e.g., harmony/counterpoint, motivic development, timbre, large-scale form, etc. in order for the student to reach his or her highest expressive potential. In flute lessons, I often encourage students to sing the melodies that they are learning. That way they can first connect with the musical phrasing without worrying about the technical aspects of the instrument. The intuitive grasp of the melody that the students acquire through singing can then inform their musical choices and expression when they play it on the flute.
