Ole Spanish tutoring is a wonderful experience. I have had many tutors in languages and he makes the experience interesting and fun. We learn a lot and have conversation and still get vocabulary. He also uses different teaching tools which I love. Also, he doesn't go too fast or too slow- he mixes it up. I always had tutors that went so slow and I didn't get enough from the class but this isn't the case with Cristobal. He is willing to answer questions and always makes you feel good about answering. He is very encouraging. Don't hesitate to take with him. He is very thorough and good at teaching Spanish. I recommend him 100% and still take Spanish with him now.

Kevin is the most outstanding tutor I have ever met or even ever spoken with. He is a retired physician who had great teachers during his career and now works with students to try and have a positive influence on their lives. My son did both high school Math and Science tutoring with him AND also did ACT test preparation with him. My son's ACT scores went from 24 before working with Kevin to 33 after working with him for just 3 months! I cannot speak more highly of him. If you want your son or daughter to really excel - you better at least meet with this guy! Darren G. Northbrook, IL

Erika is an excellent Spanish tutor. She teaches through reading, watching videos, and speaking. Her lessons have a historical and cultural component, in addition to conversational Spanish and colloquialisms. Our hour lessons fly by, and sometimes we lose track of time and keep chatting after the lesson is over. She is always engaged, interested and passionate about the material, and able to answer any questions. I never feel uncomfortable or nervous when speaking to Erika in Spanish. I highly recommend Erika for Spanish tutoring!

I´ve only been working with Cristobal for a short time due to my work schedule, but I´m very comfortable now with speaking and reading Spanish. I really like his approach to teaching the language and his passion for it. He also has group meet ups so that you can enjoy speaking with others on your proficiency level and continue gaining confidence in your speaking ability.

We found Ms Pérez through a friend, as our kids wanted to advance their Spanish level. During the first lesson she arrived promptly and was curtious toward the whole family. My children can not stop thanking me for hiring her, as they have improved radically. I also believe that Ms Pérez is originally from Europe and can teach to a high standard of English. Highly recommended.

      About

I am currently a senior at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale where I work three jobs and plan to graduate in December 2015 with a general Bachelor's of Arts and a minor in Psychology. My BA is a general major, but entails over 100 credit hours in education and special education courses. Also, I have completed over 50 hours of observation in a functional classroom at Warren Township High School. During my time at SIUC I have had the opportunity to work as a library assistant at Morris Library and a research assistant for the Tracking Rare Incidence Syndromes project which seeks to increase awareness and knowledge for families and professionals touched by rare trisomy conditions and aims to facilitate improved decision making for optimal services and supports for affected children and their families. Additionally, I work as an academic and functional coach for Options Transition to Independence, a transition to independence facility which works with young adult with disabilities ages 18-21. Over the summer, I plan to challenge myself by working with child and young adults in a variety of academic and functional skills. I believe these experiences and my knowledge will help individuals in need of more support academically and/or functionally and socially. Note, I am not a licensed special education teacher at the moment, but I have experience and determination to help your child as needed.

      About

Learning a new language can be challenging when the content you're learning does not apply to your professional background or interests. My teaching philosphy focuses and considers the students' likes, hobbies and everyday life to make sure the lesson ties in with their lives; thus, allowing for knowledge retention and student motivation to learn a new language. I also utilize a Total Physical Approach of teaching, where technology, art, music and visuals are used for a more relaxed way of learning. In short, the students' life is what makes up most of the lesson content, for better engagement in the lesson.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
