"We used Mark Solock as our wedding officiant and couldn’t have been happier with the job he did.  We are a multicultural and multi-religious family who needed an officiant who understood our needs and was able to unify our ceremony. (BTW not easy to find) Mark was engaging and had a great pace to the ceremony.   Our schedules are ridiculous, and Mark was an excellent communicator who made sure we understood the time lines and what all was needed to make the event amazing! He even provided us with templates and the "what to do after" guidelines as well! Mark incorporated the story of us as a couple based on the meetings we had prior to the ceremony.  We had several compliments about the job he did and would recommend him highly for other couples looking for an officiant of their own.   Wonderful job Mark!"

"Jocelyn Ross was the officiant of my wedding on March 8, 2014. She did an excellent job! The vows were very eloquent and moving, personalized and appropriate to our values as a couple. She even brought a guest book, something blue for me and a paper runner for the aisle--small details that I'd forgotten in my few days of preparation. These made all the difference. It was an intimate at-home wedding and Jocelyn was an excellent choice. I highly recommend her. "

"Pastor Leeroy Coleman performed a funeral service for my Father. He assisted in various ways in the planning and preparation of the funeral. It was immensely appreciated , because it was a time that was so difficult to concentrate and focus during such a stressful time. He was professional, yet extremely empathetic. Extremely patient. He customized the service just to suit our needs. He helped us all during our grieving period and followed up with us after. Everything he did, my family and I were so touched, Blessed and appreciated his service. I have also used Pastor Coleman to perform my wedding ceremony, and he also exercised his professionalism with us. He gave us an amazing wedding ceremony. Pastor Coleman has performed numerous weddings, funerals, baby dedications for many people that I know. He has also helped families through sicknesses and tragedies. I know everyone was quite happy and extremely grateful for his kind services to them. He tailors his service to suit each family, because each of us are unique in our mourning etc. I would not hesitate one bit to recommend Pastor Leeroy Coleman as a Pastor that can perform all these service and more while showing families, love, sympathy, empathy, patience, thoughtfulness for whatever their need be. His Ministry is a Blessing to us all. I will continue to use his services, and to recommend him to others. Audrey Powell"

"If I could give Liz a 10 star rating, I would! She was absolutely fantastic to work with and always responded to emails within an hour or two. She completely customized our wedding to tell OUR love story. She showed up early to help set up and offered to stay until everything was cleaned up! She always sent emails or hand written cards (how awesome is that?!) to let us know she was looking forward to our big day. We even received multiple compliments from some of our wedding guests as to how professional, kind, helpful and what a total sweetheart she was overall. Highly, highly recommend her! "Eric Dawson did an amazing job officiating our wedding! We actually chose him pretty last minute, but we could tell he had experience and felt confident he would do a great job. He was always prompt to answer questions and made everything so easy for us we didn't have to worry about anything! He spoke from the Bible and prayed for us which was definitely what we were wanting at our ceremony. Thank you for everything!"

"Erika acted as the officiant for our wedding. She was very responsive from the time we booked to the day of the wedding, providing plenty of options for the ceremony wording and taking feedback from us on what to change. We elected to have the sand ceremony but were surprised on the wedding day that we were expected to bring two different types of sand. This was unexpected and since the sand wasn't available we were forced to switch to the pebble ceremony only minutes before the ceremony. Besides a small hiccup during the actual ceremony (she called me the name of my best man during the ring presentation!) it went by as well as it could of. We were pleased overall with Erika and would recommend her to anyone looking for a non-religious officiant!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
