Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

I needed an affordable moving company and fast! I liked how Trenea was quick to respond and always answered my calls and questions. Though my move had some difficulties as I was moving out of state the crew went above and beyond to insure that my move was completed. Trenea was completely professional the entire time.

Moving Mountains had very professional, courteous, and punctual staff who moved a vintage, early 1900’s upright piano with finesse and caution! This was no easy task, as the piano is built to last. I am grateful for their services and help moving this sentimental piece of furniture. Thank you!!

They were a little late, but other than that, they were great. They helped me move in a baby grand into my home. It was not by any means the easiest of moves as they had to improvise to get it up a few flights of stairs since my original plan didn’t work. We moved to plan B, they adapted with no complaints and did it. It was extremely impressive. The 3 guys were very cool and professional. Definitely recommend.

They charged twice what we were quoted. I received a call the morning we were moving and was asked to tell them how much furniture, boxes, etc. I had previously provided the company wirh all this information. I then listened to one of the staff complain that we had too much stuff for two movers to handle. Over all I was very disappointed.

They were late, and even though they did call, they called 5 mins before they were suppose to be at the storage, so I had to sit and wait an hour for them. Then, they brought nearly a full size semi-truck, this thing was ridiculously huge, even though I told them that I had about 20 boxes and 4 pieces of furniture. When they arrived to the storage, they made me sign a waiver stating that they were not responsible for ANY damage to anything, because anything could have happened to the items while they were in storage for a month and a half. This waiver should have been disclosed and discussed while I was on the phone making the appointment. If I had known that I would be forced to sign a waiver allowing them to ruin my stuff with no consequence, I would have gone with another mover, or saved the money and moved myself. Thankfully, they did not damage anything, however, they move INCREDIBLY SLOW. There were 2 guys to move 20 boxes and 4 pieces of small furniture. I'm a girl, and I moved all the stuff out of my house and into storage myself, but it took a moving company with 2 men HOURS to move my stuff from storage to my new house. RIDICULOUS!!!! Also, every box was marked with what room to put things in, and I primarily got everything dumped in the living room....Gee thanks for all the help. One last thing, I was quoted $55/hr from Jon the Operations Manager, HOWEVER, once the job was complete my bill came out to $385!!!!! It took 2.5 hours to move that little bit of stuff and drive 9 miles!! $55/hour my BIG BUTT!!! I was quoted $55/hr and charged $110! Also, perhaps they should have reimbursed me $110/hr for the hour I had to wait for them!! LET ME BE CLEAR... THIS COMPANY IS CRAP!!!! They screw the customer over by being shady shysters!!! However, The actual movers, other then being slow, were great guys...funny, kind, and cared about doing a good job. Save the aggravation and hire a real company. Please view my photos so that you can see that I was conned!!!!!

I used Pick up movers for my move from Chicago to Florida and it was a night mare from the start. Starting with the fact that it cost me way more than what was anticipated to move my belongings (an extra $800 to be exact putting my total at $4,000 all paid up front. I was promised free storage for a month and I got that but they failed to mention that after that it will be $460 a month which is completely in reasonable and way overpriced not once did someone tell me an amount they just kept saying after 30 days it's not free. Okay i had no choice but to bite the bullet my new house was t ready and I had no where for it to go. Moving on to delivery day, the movers arrive at my new home and start unloading the truck and bringing my items inside. This is where the real issues start, I noticed a dead cockroach on one of my boxes I showed the movers but they didn't really speak English and kind of shrugged it off. So at this point I want to check my boxes to see what else lies ahead and of course to my surprise I am opening boxes and live roaches come running out the top of my boxes. I immediately instruct the movers to take it back out side. They continue on and open another box and even more roaches attempt to get out of the box. This is completely unacceptable I have never had roaches before in my life and in Chicago we don't even have big cockroaches only the smaller ones. At his point I reach out to the moving company to inform them of what was going on the man asked me to send an email with some pictures and I immediately did so only to get no response. So at that point I tell them just to put the boxes in the garage I don't want anything else in the house. I had a dresser that was wrapped in plastic and blankets and some how it still had water damage the top was warped and I had to toss it. I call the moving company again but I guess they looked at the caller Id because I couldn't get anyone to pick up even this morning after they ignored my emails yesterday during the delivery There were also water in my boxes. I didn't take pictures of every single roach I saw, I was just trying to vacuum them up as soon as I saw them before they got away. They were coming out of some of my boxes 3-4 at a time. When the movers were opening the boxes they somehow seemed to be grossed out to a point that they were debating on who should kill it and had the nerve to laugh when they knew I was upset about the situation when I saw them. I didn't find anything funny about having a roach infestation in my belongings that I spent $4,500 to get down here. So now they are in my house and obviously my garage. On top of the roaches there were even mice droppings throughout and damage to a few pairs of shoes from them chewing on the heels. I now have to spend even MORE money to replace things and exterminate the whole house. Not to mention the fact that I didn't get what I was promised since a majority of the items could not be brought In the house and dispersed to the proper place. I now have to go through the extra hassle of throughly checking and cleaning my items one by one before they can come in side. One of the movers was also quite disrespectful and had the nerve to get loud and yell at me the because I told him to stop and get in touch with some sort of management regarding the damage and the roaches and he told me to "call the police then" lol you have got to be kidding me. I finally speak with Frank again today (the person that I originally spoke with to set up my move) and tell him and emailed him of the issues with pictures from yesterday only for him to offer to give me $100 are you kidding me that's not even enough to cover the extermination. So needless to say I am quite pissed and still not even moved in. STAY FAR FAR FAR away from his company they are shady and will leave you hanging when something goes wrong.

I ordered a piece of furniture which the shipper would only offload into our garage. Unfortunately, it was too heavy for my fiancé and I to move into the house by ourselves. We had also collected a lot of junk and boxes that we were having trouble getting rid of due to our neighborhood garbage restrictions. After contacting them the response time was extremely quick and customer service was excellent! They were able to be out here within an hour on a Saturday afternoon. They moved the furniture into the house with no issue and took all the boxes and junk we have been trying to get rid of. They were very polite and professional and got the job done quickly. I would recommend using them and we will definitely be using them for any future projects we have!

Derrick and his crew were more than accommodating with my job request. Derrick and his team showed knowledge of the surrounding area when it came to parking, pay rates, etc., When it came to attention to detail such as fragile pieces of furniture and how to go about moving, the team not only carefully moved them but did so quickly. As an example, I anticipated the team arriving and simply loading a truck, however, they not only did that but they wrapped wooden furniture to avoid drawers spilling out and friction along vulnerable surfaces. If you’re hesitant like I was, don’t be - this team went above and beyond to assist me. I cannot emphasize this team enough. They were punctual, professional, and an all around good sense of character.
