Scott was great. I was having trouble with walking my dog. We went for a long walk and he was not only training my dog but me as well. He gave me a lot of great advice and I am certainly going to work my best to get my dog to walk by my side. Thanks, Scott.

This was my first time getting a trainer and I made the best choice with Sherry. She's an incredible woman with a very holistic approach to dog training, which is exactly what I was looking for. She knew her information and put us in the right direction to correct my dog's behavioral issue. She is very relatable, easy to communicate with, and an overall joy to be around. I cannot wait to work with her again soon!

Gina was excellent to work with. Not only is she good with our Dog, but probably as important: good with us (after all, Dog Training is more about teaching the owners to teach the dog, than teaching the dog!).

Belinda provided excellent care for our dog. Our dog, being a rescue dog, required specialized care in which she delivered; this included having patience, providing lots of attention, and staying overnight. All of which she did all eagerly. Belinda came to our house on a couple different occasions so our dog could become familiar with her. She even brought our Pebbles a new toy and treats! She maintained communication with us while we were away, providing updates and sending pictures. While it was difficult to leave our dog (specially being new to this state) I did find comfort knowing she and our house were being well cared for. Belinda is truly a sweet and caring person to owners and their pets as well as honest and responsible. We will definitely be using her services again:)! Thank you Belinda! We greatly appreciate all you have done for us!

We used Worthee for the first time over the Christmas holiday (2013). We combined walks with overnights, over a period of five days. Having previously boarded our dog and seeing the stress this caused him, having the in-home care was priceless. We came home to a happy dog, which was very important to us. We also appreciated getting periodic updates from the walkers while we were gone, including pictures! We are hooked, and plan to continue to use Worthee for our dog-walking needs.

I went to her facility and it has indoor. & outdoor areas and a huge agility course that we did too, after training. My dog listened immediately to her and now she is showing me how to get the same results all the time. She really enjoys helping you. Nice lady. We are going back.

We would highly recommend Chris and Takacs Dog Training! We hired Chris to help with our 6 month old wheaten terrier puppy and were more than pleased with the results. Chris was able to customize a training plan based on our family home and not just an off the shelf program. He helped us create an engaging and fun training program that included basic house training, leash and walking control, when&how to treat, controlling temperament and discipline with guests, etc. We will definitely be calling Chris in the future for any and all dog training needs!

Leslie put me at ease the moment she walked through my front door! She is so easy to talk to about any issues concerning my dog and takes the time and care to personalize training to that dogs needs. Her training method allows for the puppy parent to both see Leslie herself do it and then for me to do it myself, since us humans needs training too! It's very crucial that the puppy parents takes and use her guidance as it will pay off immensely! My puppy, Rhett, was constantly love biting for attention and bothering us during non play time, like dinner. Thanks to her training (me and Rhett that is, lol), he is not nipping and knows when we go to eat, it's not play time. He's also much improved with greetings, has better focus, and is well in his way to be an excellent Canine Citizen! We love, Leslie! 2 paws up! !

Here is a little history, we adopted a tree walker coonhound from a shelter in Tennessee and brought him home to Wisconsin. The first month was ok as we all got adjusted to each other. There were counter surfing, mouthing and dominance issues from the beginning. We knew we had a stubborn ALPHA, ALPHA male but we were working through it. The dog and I had an altercation over a rawhide where he became very aggressive and tried to bite me. From that day forward he would try to attack me unsolicited any time he saw me or heard my voice. It got so bad I would have to lock myself in a room so my wife could let him out. I am 6',1" tall and 220 lbs, this is the first time in my life with all the dogs I've owned that I was afraid of a dog. We talked to many behaviorist's whom all said we should just rehome the dog and had no answers for us. I was determined not to give up and make things work because I knew that this was a good dog deep down inside. That is when I was recommend to Shelly at "Hair of the dog that bit ya". I got a great feeling from her right away on the phone and was intrigued by her explanation of how she handles her training of dogs (it was a much different approach from what I was hearing from everyone else). This is a large breed hunting dog who is aggressive and she knew exactly how to handle it. She came out the very next morning to a situation where everyone in the house was uneasy and afraid of this dog who now was in total control of the situation. Long story short after two hours Shelly had broken the dog had him taking commands from both my wife and myself. We felt like we had our lives back and believe it or not the dog seemed happier that he now knew the pecking order. This was truly a Christmas miracle for my entire family. The picture attached is from the same day where that morning my dog wanted to kill me and what he was like by the afternoon! I cannot thank Shelly enough and I am so excited for our new life together with Bohannon. Todd & Shelly Bloom

We are so happy we found Black Dog K9! Our 1 year-old rat terrier/dalmatian mix, Buddy, loves Marty and loves his dog Ida! I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with Black Dog. Before we started training with Marty, we struggled to train Buddy with general obedience and meeting other dogs. Buddy barks like crazy at large dogs, but tonight Buddy played with 105 pound Ida in our house. It was such a relief to see Buddy play well with another dog! Marty facilitated the whole process and we couldn't have done it without him (or Ida!). We feel so lucky to have Marty help us with the socialization process, and to see Buddy have fun with a large dog! Before working with Marty, we received quotes from other trainers and not only were we uncomfortable with their approaches, but their prices were outrageous. Black Dog K-9 approaches obedience training with love and offers training that is best for the dog, at a reasonable price. Marty has realistic suggestions, answers all questions thoroughly, gives great examples, and has excellent recommendations for dog training tools. In addition to the exceptional dog training we've already received in only 4 sessions, Marty has been kind, supportive, and is really a joy to be around--Buddy thinks so too! Marty is flexible, punctual, and he really cares about you and your dog. If you're trying to decide between trainers, go with Black Dog K9, you won't regret it.

My dog Pixie and I have been working with Michelle for the last few months, and it has been life changing! Pixie's habit of jumping on people, pulling hard on the leash during walks and her reactivity to dogs (and bunnies!) were all making it difficult to have fun and enjoy my dog. Within 5 minutes of meeting my dog, Michelle had Pixie listening and focused on her, and following all the basic commands she gets too excited to follow around new people! It was so impressive! Michelle is always professional, and always willing to spend whatever time the dog and owner need during that session to introduce and practice new things. She is great about answering questions and giving homework that really reinforces the training. We have worked on door manners, greetings, walking easily on leash and her reactivity to dogs and bunnies! It really is like having a new dog! All with positive reinforcement (no awful shock collar!). And the best part, Michelle is teaching me how to be a better friend to my dog, by helping me pay better attention to Pixie's reactions to the world around her. I plan on getting another dog in the future, and I will definitely have Michelle at Peak train my new baby as well! (Picture is of Pixie in a down-wait with treats on feet)

Jeanie Murray: Well, seven years ago Tom McMurchie worked with me and my 1-year old Labradoodle, Rush, in Phoenix AZ. I don't have adequate words to explain how wonderful the experience was. Tom was knowledgeable, professional, patient, humane, and just darn perfect. He trained me as well to make Rush an awesome, well-mannered family member. Then, Tom moved to Chicago. Rush is 8 years old (still perfect), but Tom has always been available for me to talk to him on the phone with dog-training advice. Then we brought a second Labradoodle into our home at 8 weeks old, Reagan. Do I ever wish Tom was still here to work with me and Reagan, who is a work in progress (almost 3 years old now). Actually, Tom did advise from afar when I had questions about Reagan. If you are looking for that perfect person to work with you and your dog, don't look any further than Tom McMurchie. Thanks, Tom!

I was really nervous when I set out to find a dog trainer for my German Shepherd, but all that was put to ease when Nicole came by for a meet and greet with my dog. She explained to me all of her training methods and answered any questions I had. She was very easy to talk to about any problems I had concerning my dog. And after three weeks of her board and train program, I am wowed! Her results are outstanding. My dog now gives me her full attention, is much more calm, and no longer pulls while walking. I kniw these

Judy and Marcus were great with my dog Bella. You can tell they really care about dogs. My dog Bella listens a lot better now. The training she received was very good. She also needed to lose weight and lost a couple pounds while training. I know now how to train her the way they showed me. I would recommend Dog Training now they really do a great job training your dog.

My 3 dogs look and smell great after getting groomed here. One of my dogs is part Schnauzer and we always get him a schnauzer cut, which isn't easy to do, I've been told. She did outstanding. I also have a yorkie who was dealing with an injury and she was able to work with him. After a bad experience at PetCo and having visited multiple dog grooming facilities, I am beyond pleased and satisfied with my experience at Deja Vu's K-9 Corner. I will be going back to get my dogs groomed here.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
