Our plumbing job turned into a nightmare of one thing leading to another, clearly due to the original plumbers installation errors many years ago. Tim had a number of good suggestions on how to resolve the problems and stuck with it until he cleanly resolved everything to our complete satisfaction..

Had a moderate plumbing re-piping project. Damian was very prompt and gave the estimate the due diligence as we have an old house with some shotty work that was done in the past. He quoted me a very reasonable price and talked me through what to expect and possible outcomes once he opened up the drywall. He never made me feel unaware and was very communicative throughout the project. He noted and fixed a washer line that wasn't part of the project because he noticed it was should be replaced. He mentioned to me some other things he noticed when he opened up the walls that should be addressed (electrical) as a courtesy. Once he was done (not an easy job of moving washer dryer out of the way and busting through some plaster wall), he walked me through what he did, showed me all the piping, demo'ed how it's now working, he ran the water for a long time and washer to show it's now draining properly. Overall, Damian was a lifesaver, did a thorough job with great demeanor and attitude.

Master Bathroom remodel done with expertise: demolition, tub, shower, tile, vanity, lights, sink, tile, grout, paint, hardware, faucets, valves. I had a contractor bail on the project, after doing the demolition and building the room (incorrectly). Ron came to the rescue with a professional demeanor, prompt arrival to quote, and explained the work involved. Not only was Ron able to work within the conditions, he reconfigured the other contractor's work to not require a complete demolition again. Ron has a knowledge of building codes and built the bathroom properly, including: reframe shower cubicle, laid concrete backer boards, repaired tub surround, installed tile straight, even, consistent, connected plumbing, electric, fixtures (very heavy stuff, but he handled it well with his colleague). I trusted Ron in my home, with the deposit and he was enjoyable to converse with and let me know in great detail about the project (before performing work). I'm pleased with the results and everything is still working great after 3 months, no leaks and nothing has broken.

Call Tritan Plumbing because we saw on Google and Angie's List that the company is rated very high for fixing plumbing problems. We called and they came out the next day to fix our clogged kitchen sink and installed a new bathroom toilet. Very affordable and very efficient. We will definitely call Tritan Plumbing for any issue we have.

Hands down best experience I’ve had on Thumbtack. If you’re looking for guys to do an unreal job and do it right the first time. These are your guys. Just moved back to Chicago bought a new place. And needed a new kitchen sink and disposal put in. I went out bought both and had them ready. Posted my add on here and they responded within the hour with a personal response and could do it the next morning on my schedule. They came out.... The sink was the wrong size for the lower cabinet but correct size for opening. They left and said to go out take my time. Return it. And to pick out one that will work for me that I’ll like. Gave me the measurements and suggested a few places. Great guys. Went out bought one brought it back. Texted the guys. They were at another job and once they finished, came back and stayed till 8pm to finish my job and make sure I had a working kitchen. And then on top of it all. Didn’t charge me a dime more than what they quoted me even though they had to come back a second time. I’m using these guys for new plumbing in my bathroom and to install the walk in shower along with new laminate floors for my whole place as well in a couple weeks. Gave me a quote that was perfect for my budget and I don’t want to look anywhere else. I trust these guys, (which doesn’t come easy for me) I’m prior service military, and couldn’t have felt more comfortable from meeting them with a smile and handshake. Even my dog laid on Salvos chest while he was installing the sink. And Salvo went one handed to do the work and pet my lab the whole time. Couldn’t be happier. Thanks gentleman. Can’t wait to see you guys soon.

Mike of Hydro Tech Max Plumbing was responsive to my inquiry. We arranged an appointment within a few days. Not only did he repair my toilets, the reason for the service call, he also aerated my bathroom sinks at no charge. Mike was helpful by providing additional maintenance care suggestions. I have already recommended Hydro Tech Max Plumbing to a friend.

The team at B&B did an incredible job repairing a main water valve at our building. From first contact to coming out to inspect the issue and returning the next morning to resolve, Bill was incredibly polite, professional and completed the fix very quickly. He even fixed a plugged shower head in one of our units at no additional charge. Because of his fast work he prevented a major water event that would have cost thousands to remedy. I would highly recommend Bill and B&B and will use them for my future plumbing needs.

Very knowledgeable, great plumbing abilities and able to fit into small spaces lol! He is very reasonably priced! I would highly recommend Signature Home Construction. I used them for my complete kitchen remodel. Larry is great to work with and extremely responsive to needs and requests. He and his team are professional, prompt, and honest. They offer great suggestions due to their knowledge and experience. Things I would have never even thought of made a huge difference in kitchen. I have a small kitchen and they miraculously made it look much larger and function in a way I didn’t think possible. They are the complete package...electric, gas, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Awesome company! Adding a couple photos

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
