He replaced my hideous light fixture with a nice new one I bought on Amazon. He went the extra mile when I needed the cord shortened. I don’t see many reviews for him doing electrical, so FYI: he does electrical too!

I had a sump pump issue, and instead of ripping me off by saying I need a new pump, Everardo came by and installed a new float/switch. He was very nice, professional, and only fixed what was needed, saving me a lot of money I would have spent on new pump I didn't need. I highly recommend him for plumbing issues. Great guy!

Tim did a great job. We had a pretty serious plumbing issue and he made himself available on a Sunday afternoon. He arrived on time and his prices were very reasonable. We will be using him again next time we have a plumbing issue.

I needed to replace my old water heater that stopped heating my water. I put in a request and Mike responded within minutes with recommendations. He was really patient and professional when, after we realized we purchased the wrong new water heater, he helped us exchange it for the right one and took more time out of his busy day to stay and finish the job. I'll definitely be keeping him on call if I have any more plumbing issues in the future! And, his prices are very reasonable; no hidden or surprise fees. Mike is a great guy, an honest professional who's great to work with. Glad we chose his quote.

I had new counter tops installed. I went with a single bowl, deeper sink not realizing piping would need to be substantially changed. I needed a plumber to disconnect piping and reconnect a couple days later. I will use Cobb Plumbing for all future plumbing needs and refer him to all women I know in the area. Don could not have been more conscientious. I'm an old woman and I live alone. I research and speak on the phone before I allow any contractor into my home. I was expecting Don to charge me substantially more than he did because the job took much longer than he thought it would. He was more than reasonable. I have peace of mind knowing Don will get here if there are any problems from all the new piping he installed. He was also great about taking care of the clean up. Hire this plumber. You won't regret it! Thank you Don Cobb!

DH Construction came in and took time to look at what was wrong and told me options and how much. Quoted me a price and had the work done and everything cleaned up in lease then 3 hours. Replaced and fixed faucet on my tub that was leaking to lower level shower and also fixed my toilet that was also leaking. Will have them come fix plumbing again when needed. Thank you Laura

Excellent Service!! I was very satisfied with the work they performed. I had issue with my kids toilet not flushing. I had called 2 guys (handyman) before and wasted my money. Finally, I called the Do Right Rooter and they fixed the issue in first time at very reasonable price. I would highly recommend the Do Right Rooter Plumbing & Sewer Experts. Do not waste your money calling non experienced handyman.. call only Do Right Rooter plumbing & Sewer Experts. Thanks Shuja Munaver

I would highly recommend Signature Home Construction. I used them for my complete kitchen remodel. Larry is great to work with and extremely responsive to needs and requests. He and his team are professional, prompt, and honest. They offer great suggestions due to their knowledge and experience. Things I would have never even thought of made a huge difference in kitchen. I have a small kitchen and they miraculously made it look much larger and function in a way I didn’t think possible. They are the complete package...electric, gas, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Awesome company! Adding a couple photos

I contacted South Shire to change the plumbing under the sink in the kitchen of one of my rental properties, they were very professional in going at the requested time, meeting with my tenant, and offering an amazing job for a value I could not even get another handyman company to come look at the initial job.

Patrick did a great job updating 2 shower valves and rerouting sink plumbing for a kitchen remodel. He even updated some piping to code that was not part of the original work scope. He was very helpful in recommending the right valves and future maintenance. Patrick was also very careful with his tile cuts as that was are only access point. He made a perfect cut that is easy to patch without damaging any other surrounding tiles. Highly recommended and definitely will be my Go To plumber from now on. I even have him coming back for some addition work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
