Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How high should you install a TV mount on a wall?

The actual height you mount your TV will depend on the layout of your room. If you’re mounting it above a fireplace or in an alcove, the height of these structures will determine the mounting height of your TV. However, Bob Villa recommends positioning your TV 42 inches on-center in conventional rooms with standard seated viewing.

Can a TV be mounted above a fireplace?

You may be able to mount your flat screen TV above your fireplace for a more streamlined look in your living room. In fact, TV mounting professionals can hang your flat screen TV flush with a wall or from a tilting or full-motion bracket mount in any room in your home. A tilting or full-motion mount may be the best option above a fireplace so you can tilt the TV down for the best viewing angle. Whether the wall above your fireplace is brick, drywall, concrete, stone or plaster, most television mounting services can accommodate your needs. Hardier wall surfaces like concrete or brick will require more labor and expertise to mount, and will likely have a higher price range.

If you want your AV and cable wires hidden in the wall, you will also pay a higher price due to the added time and skill to properly drill the holes and run wires. Before mounting your TV above your fireplace, consult with the manufacturer about necessary distance from heat sources. If the space above your fireplace gets too warm, another location could be better for the longevity of your TV. Your television mounting services may take between one and two hours, or more depending on your home theater setup.

How much does it cost to mount a TV?

Elevate your home style with television mounting services. The national average price for television mounting services ranges between $100 and $130. Factors that can affect cost are the material of the wall you want the TV mounted on, whether you want the wires hidden, and any additional entertainment system connection you desire. It probably costs more to mount a TV on brick, stone or concrete than on drywall or plaster due to the added labor required to drill holes. For example, a company may charge an additional $99 to mount a TV on a brick wall. Here are some examples of average costs for television mounting services:

  • Basic TV wall mount: $40. Does not include bracket, device connection or strip management.
  • TV wall mount: $119. Includes bracket, mounting services, strip management system (for concealing external wires), and connection of all entertainment devices.
  • TV wall mount with wires hidden inside wall: $139.
  • Installation of additional electrical outlet: $65.
  • TV wall mount over fireplace with wires hidden: $179-$249.
  • TV wall mount and up to 5 speakers wall-mounted with hidden wires: $399.

Can you mount any TV?

Many TVs can be mounted with standard equipment. However, you need to cover a few details before mounting a TV. Know the size and weight of your TV before you purchase a mount. Additionally, make sure your TV follows the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) standards by looking for the VESA logo followed by a number. Match this number to the VESA-compatible mount to ensure compatibility. If you’re unsure if your TV can be mounted, contact the best professional TV mounting services in your area to see if they can offer guidance and help you with the installation.

How do I hide the wires to my wall-mounted TV?

You can hide wires from a hanging TV on a wall by putting them behind the wall. However, this requires some drilling or buying an in-wall power kit. Alternatively, you can use what’s called a “raceway” — a hollow metal or plastic channel — that runs down your wall and hides your cables from sight. To get the job done right, and avoid risking damage to your wall, hire a professional TV wall mount installer near you.

Can you mount a TV without studs?

Yes, you can mount a TV without studs using hollow wall anchors, which are used to hang objects on a wall, according to Digital Trends. However, these have limits. Make sure they can handle the weight of your TV.

If you’re not comfortable mounting a TV on the wall without studs by yourself, hire a top-rated professional in your area instead.

What tools do you need to mount a TV on the wall?

You need several tools to mount a TV on a wall. Often, the tools that are needed include safety goggles, a stud finder or hollow wall anchors, a level, a power drill and bits of various sizes. You’ll also likely need a socket wrench and screwdriver set. If you don’t have these tools, hire a TV wall mount installer near you who can do the job and bring their own tools.

Are TV wall mounts universal?

TV wall mounts are generally universal. This is because most TV wall mounts comply with standards set forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). Thanks to this set of standards, any mount you buy is likely to be a universal TV wall mount. However, exceptions do apply. Certain brands may not follow VESA standards, and though this is rare, it’s worth checking to make sure you’re buying a VESA-compatible universal TV mount.

Can a TV mounting service also install a home theater system?

Yes, a TV mounting service is often able to install a home theater system as well. Companies and technicians who offer flat-screen TV wall mount installation service may offer package deals on installing surround sound and other parts of a home theater installation. To find the best TV mounting service near you that can install a surround sound system in your home, compare companies side by side. Choose a service that’s within your budget and book an appointment instantly.

What type of TV mount do I need?

There are several types of TV mounts, including fixed mounts, tilting mounts and full-motion mounts. A fixed mount is sturdy but offers no movement, and a tilting mount tilts vertically. A full-motion TV mount swivels and tilts for the maximum number of possible viewing options. You can also mount your TV from above with a ceiling TV mount. Whichever TV mount you choose, ensure it can support your TV’s weight and size. If you need help choosing and installing a TV mount, contact a TV wall mount installer near you.

Nauman was amazing. I had him mount a frame TV. Unfortunately, the mount that came with the TV couldn’t be installed where I wanted it. Nauman went out and bought a mount that would work on my wall, he came back the next day, and installed it in less than 30 minutes. Life-saver!

Great company, would recommend to anyone needing a tv mounted. Had a difficult ask of installing a mantle mount with a thin OLED on plaster walls, and it was no problem for them. Super nice and professional, cleaned up when finished, and even helped conceal wires.

Lindsay arrived right at the scheduled time and got to work mounting my TV. He did a great job, and he and his father hid the cords behind the wall. The best part is that after it was installed and I sat on the couch, I thought the TV was rather high. I messaged Mr. Brooks and Lindsay came back in a matter of minutes! He lowered the TV to the height I wanted and I really appreciated the responsiveness and professionalism.

Beniamin was easy to schedule an appointment with, was knowledgeable and prepared with proper equipment. The project was completed in a reasonable amount of time for a fair price. The primary project was installation of 2 TV wall mounts on 2 different surface types. Additionally, Beniamin provided advice on audio system currently in place. I would rehire him again.

Ron was awesome. We had him hang our 55" plasma to the wall using an articulating mount as well as our sound bar. He also installed an outlet and ran the wires behind the wall - it looks fantastic. Ron was not only flexible to our schedule but also extremely knowledgeable about safety. I spoke to quite a few people who said they would just run the TV plug through the wall but Ron verified my research and confirmed that its incredibly dangerous.

Ron was great. Very punctual, fairly priced and willing to go the extra mile to make sure my equipment looked great. Took him only about 30 minutes to mount my new TV on the wall. He didn't have to run any wires, which I'm sure cut down on the time, but I thought it was done very efficiently. Will hire Ron again the next time I have TVs to install.

If you just want a basic half job of tv mounting this is the guy you want. But if you want quality work done don’t work with this guy. He is clearly someone who learned this on YouTube and is now building a hustle with it. He didn’t have the correct tools needed. I asked him to mount the sound bar and he wouldn’t, because he was lazy and just wanted the money. He also left 2 holes in my wall. Then still wanted me to pay $250 for what was easily a $100 job. You’re suppose to input an outlet when mounting a tv and he didn’t do that. I had to have someone else come out to finish the job and fix what he started. They mounted the sound bar, installed 2 outlets. Hooked up my sound-bar and speakers and connected all the wires. And they charged me $250. They basically charged the same amount this guy did, but they gave me a complete job. If you want quality work done. Don’t go to this guy.

Wow! Can I give Alex 6 stars?! Alex was so great! He went way above and beyond and made sure everything was taken care of for us. You should book him and know you will be on excellent hands! We had him mount and conceal the wires for our TV. He helped me pick the right TV mount and even came over early to get organized before the cable company came to install. He also waited around for the cable company to come so he could help with the wiring. THEN to top it off, once he left we realized the HDMI cord wasn’t working right and making the cable picture go in and out. So Alex came back an hour later with a cord for us to help put a new one in and fish it through the wall. He was so dedicated and his work is flawless! He also took a look at the speakers we had and helped recommend a sound system for if we wanted to use them one day! Overall Alex is fantastic! You should definitely hire him!

The professional was very responsive and able to complete the project within a quick turn around. We had to rearrange the sound bar to hang lower than originally set I order for the remote signal connection. We agreed I would fill the holes that were left in the original replacement and he asked me if I'd like for him to cover them up. I thought it easiest for me to fill after the installation. The sound bar is off center which is less than ideal. I presume it's because he wanted to hang it from one of the studs he located. Also, I need to hide the cords yet despite me having the cord covers and the extension cord needed to provide enough slack. Overall I'm pleased that the TV is now hung from the wall mount but there is more work to be done before I can call this project complete.
