Thank you Bob for the prompt response. I found out our furnace went down on Thursday and we’ve been with no heat. A friend told me about Thumbtrack and Bob Evans with Premier HVAC was one of 10 that responded to the service needed. I have to say one of the fastest response and timely repair. He had everything to get my family all warmed up again. Thank you Bob.

Robert responded to our request within minutes, set up a time for the very next day, arrived on time, got straight to work, clearly was well prepared, installed two Nest thermostats, even worked on wiring on the actual HVAC units, gave me an obsessively detailed worksheet with the serial numbers for the Nest associated with each HVAC system, then recommended maintenance on those units, then stuck to the honest estimate he had provided before starting the job. We couldn't be more satisfied with this professional.

I was initially a bit hesitant about hiring Green Air Care based upon the yelp reviews... 3 1/2 stars is fairly low in my opinion. However, I did hire them... and I was extremely satisfied with the service provided and would highly recommend them for anyone looking to have their furnace and ductwork cleaned. The whole process was flawless... When I called on the phone for ", the woman who answered provide me a detailed overview of the process, a detailed price quote, and a reasonable timeframe window of when the workers would arrive at my home. A team of two workers came, and they were extremely knowledgeable and polite... They were careful to not drag their ladders across our hardwood floors and not to bump their equipment into our white walls. The whole process took less than two hours, and there were before and after photos taken to show just how much cleaner the ducts were after the process. The workers also replaced my furnace air filters upon my request. Additionally, they noticed that the filter on our humidifier had not been changed and was collecting, I believe, calcium deposits... They recommended a replacement in order to prevent damage, and not to use the humidifier until the new filter was in place. Overall, I was extremely satisfied. Although I received quotes for a lower price, I am definitely comfortable with the service I received for the price paid. For what it's worth, Green Air Care is also NADCA certified, and the lower-priced service providers were not. I should also say that I initially planned to use Stanley Steamers... apparently they can clean ductwork and not just carpets. I had a team come out to give me a quote, but when the actual team came out to do the cleaning, their equipment would not work on my furnace. Needless to say, I was quite annoyed... But that's what I get for trying to hire a carpet cleaning business to clean my HVAC ducts.

Boris did a great job updating my home thermostat to an wifi Ecobee3. We needed new wiring form the furnace unit up to the dining room, so it took longer than we expected. Very affordable and professional. Will call him again if i need any more HVAC work done!

I would definitely recommend Ronier with ComfortAire for AC diagnostics and repair. Before I even hired him, he was able to give me a probable diagnosis of the problem with my 1990s AC unit just by my description of what was wrong (and was correct). He promptly came out on a Sunday when he said he would, and fixed the issue in about 20 minutes. Never once suggested that we needed a new, expensive unit like we feared might be necessary. He was also super friendly and genuine. He gave us some tips for our HVAC systems in general and never once tried to sell us anything extra. In fact, he told us we didn't need to do certain costly services or maintence I thought we might need to do on our systems. I'll definitely use Ronier again when my HVAC systems need help.

Vitaliy was great! He came out for a quote the same day I contacted him and the job was done just a few days later. We're very happy with our new central air conditioning. It works well! Vitaliy upgraded both the unit and a pump free of charge because of our home's unique quirks. I would definitely recommend him! Thank you, Vitaliy!

I noticed water dripping from my furnace and I called RB Temperture Service. The technician Robert returned my call within 10 minutes and told me to turn the power off at the furnace to help prevent any damage to the furnace until he got there. He then showed up within an hour and explained to me what the problem was. I have to admit that I was very worried that I would need a new replacement but it turned out to be just a clogged drain line. Thank you for your honesty and quick response Robert! I'll definitely be calling you if I have any other problems.

It was great dealing with an honest guy like John. he was able to come out and do an estimate on short notice and give us his professional opinion and best options without up selling us. Also recommended we get a few more estimates which furthers his honesty. Our HVAC system is old so we were prepared for the worst but wanted a second opinion from a pro which I got from John.

Any time I reached out to Baker he replied within minutes. He was very professional and was not only on time, but even a couple minutes early. He had the best rates that I found and he said he would be competitive if we found a lower cost, which we did not. He installed a new furnace for us and had it up and running as quickly as possible. I will go to him in the future for any heating or ac repairs in the future. He was great to work with! Thank you, Baker! We appreciate all the work and time you put in! Rachel

Jason provided a high level of service. We had other HVAC/Boiler vendors and all of them recommended a boiler based on the square footage of the unit as opposed to the length of the coils in the house. Jason properly measured and recommended a boiler for us that was not only right for the space, but right for the existing infrastructure. Jason was professional, very knowledgeable, punctual and did the work at a very fair price. Jason also installed a water heater for us the same day. I highly recommend Jason for boiler and water heater installations!

Everyone at Premium was wonderful. Betty was eager to help and answered all our questions. She was able to schedule us promptly and didn't charge us a dime when Mike came out for what I thought would be routine maintenance and what turned out to be needing a new furnace. Mike gave me a great quote on the spot and was not pushy at all, allowing me to get other quotes and do some research before scheduling for the replacement. He went above and beyond with the install and even added some great features at no additional cost and without prompting. The job was more complicated than initially thought and Mike and his partner came back the very next day to make sure the job was complete. We are so thankful for the great job they did. This is not a fancy operation and has very little online presence- because they focus on what they do- HVAC services. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC work.

I had humidifier installation service from Jaime. I found him on Thumbtack and he was very patient answering all my questions before the project. He was exact on time for my appointment, which is very rare among all the contractors I've used. The space on the return duct is pretty tight for the humidifier. He moved an electric box and reconnect furnace flue to make space. The installation was done smoothly without any issues, and he cleaned up everything before left. I really enjoyed his service and I will definitely call him again for my future needs on my HVAC system.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
