I needed to have my “old” garbage disposal removed as it was leaking. Salvo responded quickly and the price he quoted me was very competitive. Some plumbers wanted twice or even three times as much for this job. Salvo came out to my house the very next day. He not only removed my garbage disposal but upon inspection of the pipes, he replaced all of them and did not want to charge me extra for it. Everything looks great now. Salvo also lays tiles and I will be sure to call him when I need new tiles in my kitchen and bathrooms. Salvo is a true professional and treats his customers with utmost respect. He cares about his work and about his customers. I would highly recommend Salvo to anyone with any plumbing needs. Thank you Salvo for your help! Paul G. (Schaumburg)

We hired Ron to install a new garbage disposal which might include moving the existing pipes. I had originally asked him to install a new kitchen faucet also, but then my husband decided to do that part himself. Ron was still happy to come out just for the disposal. He gave us a quote for the installation and communicated very thoroughly with me about the details of the job. When Ron came out for the installation, he measured the disposal and suggested exchanging it for a smaller model to avoid moving the pipes. My husband agreed and Ron went to store to purchase a smaller disposal. Overall, we were happy with his work and price for the job.

Tom initially came to do work with my electrical panel so that I could connect my double oven. I was in a pinch before the holiday - he was prompt in answering the service call, knowledgable and his confidence helped to ease my anxiety. After the great experience I had with Tom on that service call, I didn't hesitate to call him again to connect my sink, dishwasher, garbage disposal and cooktop once my kitchen remodel was complete. We ran into an unforeseen problem with the existing configuration of the plumbing and also had to go into the drywall to connect an electrical outlet for the cooktop. Tom had adequate staff to get this done within the day and although the project ended up costing more than he initially quoted me, the price was very fair for the amount of work that had to be done. I'm looking forward to having them come back to install new light fixtures and my kitchen backsplash. I've found Affordable Handyman to be my service of choice for all projects/repairs - big and small.

Konstantin is an expert! I had him plumb a basement, kitchen and washer and dryer hookups. He was able to show me different ways of doing things to work out how it would be most affordable and that was everything! If you want someone professional but also extremely personable and considerate of your needs and budget, he’s your guy!

He was very responsive from our initial call and communicated ETA based on another job he was finishing up in the neighborhood. His service was speedy and was respectful during the entire process. I highly recommend Brian and will definitely use him again on the future. Thank you again Brian!

We had Marek demo and install a new kitchen backsplash for us. His wife, Gracie, handles scheduling/communication and does an amazing job. We were on a tight schedule for both the demo and install due to other trades working in our kitchen and Marek/Gracie did an excellent job on communicating and getting the job done right and on time.

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

I'd recommend Advantex for any kitchen remodel project. Jim Klingbiel of Advantex Restoration, Inc. said what he was going to do and did what he said. While there was the normal ordering wait for our cabinets and counters, Jim was very good at managing the preliminary work to be done just in time with a minimum of disruption to or family. His people are very courteous and extremely mindful of cleanliness.

Let me start by saying I'm a female living alone and I was skeptical with calling in a crew to do remodeling. I needed so much done, I had no choice but to hire help. I'm so happy I did! The owner of the company was so pleasant, professional and courteous. He was extremely helpful with making sure I understood the whole process. Immediately I could tell he was very knowledgeable in his trade. Im not sure I'm supposed to say this but he even saved me money too! The staff working with him were very professional and were punctual. They always made sure I was satisfied with the cleanup EACH TIME they came in. Now, to the work they did...everything looked better than I even thought. I expanded my master bedroom (made 2 bedrooms into 1) and also added a bathroom. Wow!!! I wish I could post pictures of my bathroom!! Separate bath walk in shower etc... My kitchen cabinets needed to be resurfaced, again came out perfect. I also had to replace all my carpet for hardwood, again stunning! My foyer needed an update, I had marble flooring put in...beautiful! One of my bathrooms needed a wall of drywall replaced, that was done as well (the owner painted it for free for me!) All I can say is I would Highly recommend Signature Construction to all my friends and family! My parents just hired him this week as well! Great company!!!

Chano and his team did a great job resealing our kitchen floor and doing some other small flooring projects (stairs, basement landing.) The work was thorough, done well, and reasonably priced. Chano was easy to work with and kept us informed about any scheduling changes or issues. I would recommend A Plus Flooring.

Network Remodeling's team did a fantastic job on our home renovations. We completed remodeled our fireplace from the ground up and had marble stone ledger applied along with marble floors and crown molding throughout the entire first floor. Their work was outstanding! They were careful, professional, punctual every day and worked hard throughout the entire work day, never showing any form of laziness. The kitchen was remodeled by adding new cabinet hardware, backsplash, under cabinet lighting and wood trimming the island base. All of the work was done quickly, but with care and high quality. The work was done carefully and with so much value and pride put into the work as if it was their own home. Their setup and cleanup every day was effective and professional and very organized. I would recommend Network Remodeling to anyone for any home remodeling. We would definitely use them again in the future! Thank you Network Remodeling for making our home so much more amazing!

Patrick did a great job updating 2 shower valves and rerouting sink plumbing for a kitchen remodel. He even updated some piping to code that was not part of the original work scope. He was very helpful in recommending the right valves and future maintenance. Patrick was also very careful with his tile cuts as that was are only access point. He made a perfect cut that is easy to patch without damaging any other surrounding tiles. Highly recommended and definitely will be my Go To plumber from now on. I even have him coming back for some addition work.

We would without a doubt recommend CA Custom Woodworking for any home remodeling.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
