Pat Donohue is such an effective life coach because he combines a lifetime of teaching experience with a passion for seeing people "unleashed" to achieve their dreams. He brings context and perspective to the table, given his "real-life" experience in business, athletics, and community leadership. He is quick to listen and connect the challenges which lie beneath the surface, and he helps me understand my strengths and capacities. Pat then crafts relevant & actionable insight, helping empower me with motivation, focus and practical disciplines to spur my personal and professional growth.

Loren Michaels Harris spoke at our high school's Operation Snowball weekend, a lock-in focused on drug prevention, leadership, and team building attended by 80 students. He is such a kind person and passionate, engaging speaker. He spoke about overcoming obstacles, keeping a positive mindset, and how our every action sends a ripple effect into the world. Several of our participants were emotionally moved by his inspiring story and came up to talk with him afterward, where he took time to have personal conversations and give encouragement. His message was powerful, uplifting, and exactly what our audience needed to hear. Thank you, Loren, for an unforgettable experience!

Mr.Katz is the best teacher I have ever had. Being in his class taught me much more than Biology. I developed a concern for the pressing matters of our environment and more conscientious about my food choices. Not only did Mr.Katz teach us lifelong lessons, but he also cares about his students. He forms friendships with them, which is somethings that most teachers do not do. One thing that I can say stands out the most is the Mycelia Project. Mr.Katz had his students make a semester long project that helps their communities and our environment. These projects can make a monument outs impact on our world and I think it's amazing that he has freshmen do this. Overall, Mr.Katz is the best teacher anyone could have.

The main word that comes to mind about Rosalyn's coaching is "courageous." She consistently and artfully offered steps, insights, and ideas that stretched me to my limits. It would have been easier for some coaches to simply go along, but Rosalyn provided the leadership I needed to press forward - and that's what I hired her to do. As a result, I now have a greater willingness to stand up tall and strong for what I believe are the best strategies in situations throughout my professional and personal life.

Dr. Michael Mecozzi spoke at our high school's Operation Snowball weekend, a lock-in focused on drug prevention, leadership, and team building. About 80 students attended, and this year's theme was "The Power of a Positive Mindset". He spoke on "Rethinking Your Thinking" and had many useful tips to overcoming negative thoughts and reaching one's full potential. He is such a kind, inspiring person and fun, interactive speaker. The students responded extremely well to his encouraging message and learned so much. Thank you, Dr. Mecozzi, for an unforgettable experience!

Hi! Min. Michael Muhammad over 20 years ago helped transform my life through the teaching of the most Ho. Elijha Muhammad and Minister Louis Farrakhan. He taught a character development class. I remember sitting in his class crying as he spoke with conviction and touch that made a heart to heart connection. As a college graduate I would say that I had never attended a class that provided a chomprehensive knowledge of self development. Anyone reading testimony, if you're familiar with the seven habits of highly effective people by Steven Covey. The seven habits are truly transformational. Min Michael and the principlals he teaches transforms lives. Many people spend money of things, Min. Michael Muhammad invest in building human potential. He inspired me and has left a forever impression of what leadership should reflect. Thank you Bro. Min. Michael.

I have been stuck in the same job for the last 5 years as a mid-level manager. I'm wasn't sure if there was hope for me to move to the next level in leadership. Letta was really responsive and quick to help me outline a strategy that should work well. We'll be meeting a couple times a month for coaching sessions where we'll work on mock interviews and leadership scenarios to help me gain more skills that will impress my bosses. This really seems like it's going to help me out of my rut!

I have studied Iyengar yoga with Amy Massat for well over a year, with great, steady progress. I am 76 years old and in good overall condition, but with rotator cuff issues in one shoulder. Amy has made a special effort to work that shoulder, in addition to addressing my overall alignment and ranges of motion. She has a good eye for analyzing a student's performance, and she articulates even the finest adjustments to one's positions very clearly. She brings great professionalism to her teaching, with her ability to demonstrate all motions and positions perfectly and her well planned lessons. I look forward to each session! Bill Gifford

Cassandra is knowledgeable, thoughtful and thorough. She always keeps the client's goals, experience, and skills in mind. Cassandra has a masterful (and magical) way of listening on multiple levels so she not only hears what is being said verbally, but she can also pick up on what is not being said. This is a valuable skill because often the key to personal and professional growth may not be obvious to the client. Cassandra can help the person go deeper and obtain a better understanding and acceptance of what “is” so that they can achieve clarity and commitment to go for what “is possible.” Cassandra’s workshops and presentations are well-organized, engaging and enjoyable. She is able to create programs that convey key information in easily understood way. I would recommend Cassandra to anyone looking for a workshop facilitator, public speaker, or personal and professional development coach.

About

I provide high energy, interactive, and empowering keynote addresses, hands on skill building workshops (when you want to dig deeper into an area than a keynote), and one on one coaching programs which inspire people to cultivate their leadership using personal, strategic, and actionable strategies. My keynotes and workshops are eye opening, interesting, and practical, and my coaching strategic and focused. My goal is to use all my tools to help you, my client, to develop your leadership, become a stronger (and happier) producer, and in turn help develop the leadership of those around you as well. Many of my recent work has centered around my book, Lead Me Out to the Ballgame: Stories and Strategies to Develop Major League Leadership. The book, as well as my presentations based on it, explores the "Ten Bases of Leadership" which were identified from over 100 interviews with Major League Baseball players, managers, and executives. Through the stories and strategies I share with my audience, participants, and clients, I help people in all walks of life to become Major League Leaders.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session.
