How much are singing lessons?

Singing lessons cost $50 per hour, on average. Hourly rates can range anywhere from $40-$80. However, some vocal instructors may charge flat rates or offer packages. They may also offer 30-minute lessons for a lower price. Or, they might require monthly tuition for ongoing classes. It depends on the voice coach.

How can I find a good voice teacher?

Use Thumbtack to find a good, top-rated voice teacher near you. With Thumbtack, you can view the teachers’ profiles, read their client testimonials and check their ratings. To ensure you hire the best instructor, ask them questions about their credentials and success with other students. You should also get cost estimates from at least three instructors before you make your decision.

What is a good age to start vocal lessons?

Whether you’re a novice or experienced singer, it’s never too late to start taking vocal lessons.

If you’re thinking about signing up your child for voice lessons, keep in mind that some instructors recommend waiting until their voice settles after puberty. Talk to voice coaches near you to find out if now's the time for you (or your child) to start taking lessons.

What are singing lessons like?

Every voice coach may have a different style of teaching, but here are a few things you'll likely experience during a singing lesson:

  • Explaining to the instructor what you want to improve on.
  • Going through a few breathing and riff exercises.
  • Receiving constructive feedback and criticism from the instructor.

Before your first voice lesson, you can ask your instructor what you should expect and how to prepare.

I am 51 years old and haven’t had any formal music instruction in 34 years. Decided it was time that I get some formal piano instruction just for my own fun and entertainment. Just had my first lesson. Vinnie assessed where I am at and what I wanted. I learned a lot about music theory that I had been missing in our very first lesson. I thought that it was an hour very well spent.

My two sons, 5 & 7, love learning from Mr. Bob! He’s very patient with the kids and talented with multiple instruments (piano, guitar, drums). He holds high expectations for his students, which allows my kids to progress rather quickly. I’ve been very happy with having Mr. Bob as their music teacher; the boys always look forward to going to music lessons.

I've been working with Suzanne for about three months now, and I'm so pleased with my progress in that short time! As an adult student who hasn't played in nearly 20 years, it's an understatement to say I'm rusty. Suzanne has patiently done a great job of working with me to assess my current skill level, build on my past experience, and work toward steady improvement in each week's lesson. She also set up lessons for my specific goals. I’m never going to be a concert pianist – I just want to re-learn my technical skills and get back to regular, comfortable, confident playing. She’s perfectly fine with that – unlike some teachers who push you to be someone you are not, or who are only comfortable with competitive students. As someone who squeezes lessons and practice into a very hectic schedule, I also appreciate that she understands when, in some weeks, I make more progress than others. I’ve had several teachers over the years. What sets Suzanne apart is that she suggests music for me, but also encourages me to trust my own intuition and preferences about what I'm ready to play. She’s direct but patient in her teaching style, praising what is working well, but clearly pointing out technique or practice approaches that will help the music get better faster. I also understand she conducts annual, optional recitals, which is great for building confidence and meeting new people. In terms of the teaching experience, Suzanne’s home studio is lovely, with two Yamaha pianos - one an upright, one a baby grand, both with beautiful voices. It's very rewarding to have the option to play both. From a scheduling standpoint, she conveniently texts for scheduling changes, and she’s flexible when lesson times inevitably have to change. The true test for me is that my family and friends have all commented on how much progress I’ve made in the last few months. Even my 5-year-old says, “You play beautifully, Mama.” I’m back to practicing every day, enjoying the unique stress relief and satisfaction of making your own music. All thanks to Suzanne!
