Tim did a great job replacing a cartridge in my bath tub. I sat and talked with him the whole time that he was working and he gave me some pointers on avoiding problems in the future. The original cartridge turned out to be faulty, and he returned immediately the next day and replaced it with a new (working) one, no questions asked. I could not be happier.

There is something special about Andrei. He is nothing like the contractors I was used to working with. From the first time we met during his estimate, he immediately stood out as professional yet very approachable, honest and detail oriented. No contractor has ever come to an estimate wearing a suit, breaking down the big project to individual tasks on the spot, and pricing each task individually as we spoke. And his price was truly reasonable. Andrei and hist partner Andrei had a rather big task on their hands - gut-rehab my master and second bathroom, and tile my foyer. I am a picky person, and I wasn't sure if I could find somebody to go along with my anal nature and constantly changing mind. But Andrei listened to all my needs and worked with me like a friend throughout the whole project. I wanted a modern curb-less linear shower drain for my master bath. Some contractors that came before Andrei have never even heard of that. He instructed my plumber on where to relocate the drain, and the rest was all Andrei. I wanted a double vanity instead of the single vanity and Andrei again worked with my plumber on relocating the toilet so we have space for a double vanity. The Andreis drove the whole project from start to finish, unlike many contractors which will leave you the last 10% for you to figure out. We had a few bumps along the road, such as having to wait on some tiles for a week, but the Andreis were very accommodating to our situation and they worked around our schedule. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but I hope you get the picture. No contractor is perfect, but Andrei comes really close to it. Best of luck to you my friend!

At first I hired Tom to move some plumbing in my kitchen remodel. He was on time, professional and very reasonably priced. He left our initial appointment just for an estimate with more work than he bargained for and each week I added more. In the end, he remodeled half of my house. From plumbing to electrical to tile to drywall, etc.. His crew is great and very respectful. My master bath looks amazing. Before he even finished my job I was referring him to family and friends. Do yourself a favor and hire him if you are reading this review. You won’t be disappointed.

The 'job' encompassed four separate projects: a) Re-roofing; b) New attic insulation; c) Upgrade from 100 to 200 amp electrical; and, d) Bathroom renovation. The job was scheduled to be competed on or before 7-Dec. Joe, and his team, worked on two projects simultaneously throughout the job period. The workmanship was good to excellent. Projects like these on older homes always run into unforeseen problems. Joe's team handled each "interesting situation" with grace and good humor without burying me in Change Orders. All projects were completed ahead of schedule with Joe - himself - being the toughest critic of the job. This left me with nothing to point out or complain about!! I plan on using Fox Restoration for other work in the spring.

I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

I needed to have some work done in the house. Raul the general contractor from Ram Renovation was referred to us by one of our neighbors who just completed a kitchen remodel with them. Needing some work done in the house, we decided to give them a call since their kitchen came out really nice! We received previous estimates from 4 other contractors and Raul was the last to meet with us. After meeting with the other contractors we weren't looking to change the layout of the kitchen, until we met with him! Raul opened our eyes and gave us ideas that no one else bothered to show. For the second meeting, he came and showed us a 3D design of the new kitchen layout. We opened a wall and made use of every space possible. Our new kitchen remodel is amazing, it totally changed the look of the house and now everything flows well together. We really enjoyed working with Raul, he has a great team and their work speaks for itself. I love it and I think it makes the house so much more beautiful!

The largest one to date was a full remodel of my master bath. I was very pleased with his professionalism! I definitely plan on using his expertise again in the very near future.

I am so pleased that I chose this company for my bathroom renovation. They were on time, courteous and really listened to what I wanted and came up with some really gorgeous designs and expanded on my own ideas! It was as if they knew exactly what I wanted. Price was not an issue at all because they worked within my budget and did not try to upsell me. The Workmanship was superb and I get so many compliments. I can't wait for them to start on my kitchen!!!!!

Recently, I had Design Developers & Rehub INC remodel my kitchen and two of my bathrooms, and change the flooring throughout the house and I couldn't have asked for a better experience with a company. The price that he came up with was very good compared to other prices, and I didn’t have to scale back the work I wanted either. Overall, he was very honest and fair. The quality of the work greatly exceeded my expectations. I recommend Design Developers & Rehub INC to everyone, as the process was smooth and painless.

Our experience with Lauren Marshall Interiors was terrific. We worked with Lauren on the renovation (gut job) of a bathroom in our 100 year old home. Because the size of the bathroom is small, it was important to choose appropriate materials and fixtures that modernized the bathroom without compromising the integrity of an older home. Lauren was able to design the space and work within our budget to achieve those two objectives. She provided great visualizations and walked us through the project. Although she had a vision, she was receptive to my input. She delivered all design specifications on time and within budget. She did not rush me to make decisions and gave me lots of options for materials. Lauren communicated well and often to ensure the project was progressing as planned. Additionally, Lauren was punctual to all meetings both at our home and showrooms. Lauren is a wonderful designer with a terrific eye for detail. I highly recommend Lauren Marshall Interiors for any and all home projects, whether a gut kitchen or bathroom job, or giving a room a fresh new look.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
