Ms. Sandy has been doing an awesome job at tutoring my 6 year-old son. Before he met her, my son was struggling with reading a book.(because we only speaks Korean at home) Now his reading skills are much improved and he is able to read! His grade get higher since Ms. Sandy starts to teach him. She is warm, patient and very sweet. We really want to have her to teach him more. We also recommended her to my Korean colleague, who has a 5 year-old daughter. - NamSuk Oh & KyongHwa Jung (in Chicago)

Wendi was fantastic and extremely helpful. My daughter had about five or six 2 hour sessions with her. She really explained what to look for in a question and how solve it or interpret it. Because of her help, my daughter got a 1500 on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT. I highly, highly recommend her!!

This is a supplement review to one I left about 12-18 months ago. Greg has far exceeded my expectations. When my daughter was in high school, and studying for the ACTs, Greg tutored her for Geometry, for which her high school was sorely lacking. She improved by 6 points on that due to his tutoring. She has finished her Freshman year in college at the University of Kansas, College of Engineering, she wanted to take her Physics I prerequisite, which was a five hour course over eight weeks. It covered 12 chapters, and flew. Greg was wonderful! He explained, and gave her the confidence, and she ended up doing exceptionally in the class. I have had experience with other tutors for my other child as well, and he far exceeds anyone. He is prepared, professional, and highly intelligent; yet he speaks to the kids on the level that they are at. I would be happy to speak with anyone considering utilizing Greg's services. You won't be disappointed.

My daughter who is in high school started seeing Laura last year when she was struggling in her math class. She had seen two or three previous tutors who didn't work out because they made the material more confusing or they couldn't figure out the math themselves. My daughter was hesitant to go to another tutor. Laura has been wonderful! She knows math, loves it, and can teach and explain even complicated math concepts. She is flexible with setting times to meet and always is encouraging. I would highly recommend her!

Ole Spanish tutoring is a wonderful experience. I have had many tutors in languages and he makes the experience interesting and fun. We learn a lot and have conversation and still get vocabulary. He also uses different teaching tools which I love. Also, he doesn't go too fast or too slow- he mixes it up. I always had tutors that went so slow and I didn't get enough from the class but this isn't the case with Cristobal. He is willing to answer questions and always makes you feel good about answering. He is very encouraging. Don't hesitate to take with him. He is very thorough and good at teaching Spanish. I recommend him 100% and still take Spanish with him now.

She did a great job on tutoring my wife in academic English. We can only recommend her. She is not a nativ borne, however her language is more suffocated if she were. Maybe that's also why she is so good at teaching. She was the best tutor we have had. Thanks again

Our first meeting was great. He is a conscientious tutor. He prepared some practices for me to learn about my skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. And then he will customize a plan for me, according to my performance in our first meeting.

After deciding to return to school, and complete my degree, the last class I had to take was a Technical Math class. Being years later, this class was no longer offered - I had to take it as an independent student, meaning I had no instructor, or class to show up to, only a syllabus and a Math book. A Math assistance area was available to students, and there I met the tutor I write of here. Of the 6 to 8 tutors available, I signed up with Dave as much as possible. The class I was taking dealt with Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry as well as an introduction to Calculus. I could barely remember how to factor a problem, but working with Dave, he spent the time to help me get through the basics, and had the patience to answer many of my off the wall questions, and many that I thought were unrelated. The first test I took before I asked for any assistance, I had totally bombed. A 47... I knew I'd need help and after working with Dave for a week and a half, the retake test I took got me an 88. Dave helped me gain the confidence I needed to figure out problems on my own, and showed me how I could apply other concepts and equations from other chapters and solve new problems in a variety of ways. I am on my last exam now, and I still choose to wait in line to work with this excellent tutor, when there are another 5 available at any time. If you are in need of assistance with Math, and are looking for someone to help you either from the very basics to intermediate and advanced topics, I would highly recommend Dave as he is an outstanding tutor, with loads of patience and knowledge, as well as being incomparable to other tutors in his willingness to help and assist you as much as you need. Thanks Dave!

I could have never passed math class without this wonderful educator by my side. There's no question that I'm not the best student and I'm a struggle to work with. Maureen never gave up on me and motivated me to never give up on myself. Her teaching style and process made it so much easier for me to understand the content, where other teachers and tutors had failed again and again. Mo sets the standard that every educator should aspire to live up to. She is the absolute best!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
