Where do I begin - well, let's just say that all my groomsmen and all of the bridesmaids that have yet to get married swore that they will be using Velvet Oaks for their weddings. The only problem will be booking them in time because of how great they are. Joe and the rest of his team are true professionals with amazing vision. Being the groom, I had enough to think about and didn't even think to worry about the videographers - luckily, I had the best ones around. From the start of our special day until the very end, we had a camera man following use to capture every moment we wanted captured. When we saw the trailer of our wedding video (I recommend you pay for it - well worth it), my wife and I were floored. We couldn't wait for the full video - when we saw the full video, we forgot how much took place and some stuff we didn't even get to see. Luckily it was beautifully captured. If you really need to, look around first and then chat with Velvet Oaks - but you'll be wasting your time talking to others as you will end up booking these guys. A+

The Maestro Media did an amazing job capturing all the special moments of our wedding day. We could not be happier with their work. Videographer, Mark Condra, was there working right alongside the photographer, capturing every imaginable detail. He worked so well with us and with our other vendors, helping the day go exactly as planned. The final products are videos we cherish and will use in the years to come to relive our wedding day. They gave us a copy of the full ceremony, footage of the toasts & first dances, a surprise shoutout video from friends & family (which we loved watching on our honeymoon) and such a creative, catchy highlight video that truly depicts the vibe of the whole day. Maestro Media was so quick in getting the final products to us. We won't hesitate to highly recommend them to friends and family looking for a talented, professional videographer.

Ed was fantastic... I cannot recommend him enough - from the professionalism, to the creativity, time management, flexibility, and dedication to the project - he was flawless throughout the entire process. We had a lot of specifications and without hesitation he created solutions when presented with constraints. Ed delivered the final product a week ahead of schedule and exceeded expectations at every opportunity. Without a doubt, Ed will be my first call for all future projects. Ed is truly in a league of his own. A class act, incredible videographer, and brilliant team member - Ed is a master in his craft and Homesick Blues Productions is by far the best decision you can make for your film project.

We hired Ben somewhat last minute as the videographer for our wedding, and we are so impressed! He was so friendly and professional, and went above and beyond to meet even our crazy requests. He worked closely with my husband to come up with creative ideas, and had the footage for us right away. Would definitely recommend!!

When I began planning my wedding, video was never part of my vision, even though I knew there would be lots of family and friends who would not be able to join us in person. But once I came across WeddingMix, video became a possibility and now everyone who couldn't make it can still see our wedding :) Videographers are restrictively expensive--that's the reason I never even had hope of seeing anything recorded for our event--so it's a bit ironic that WeddingMix ended up being one of our least expensive vendors! For reference, the photography cost us more than three times as much as the videography. But WeddingMix isn't just inexpensive, it's easy to use and has an AMAZING staff that blew my expectations out of the water. Signing up, learning how to work the cameras, sending the equipment back in, uploading our own footage, etc., it was all very straightforward which gave me confidence the entire time. The responsiveness and helpfulness of the WeddingMix team was better than any other vendor I worked with (even better than the friends and family who helped me with other wedding tasks, honestly) and they made my experience using the service a positive memory. Any time I have a chance, I recommend WeddingMix. A huge number of people don't consider quality video footage as a possibility when they make their wedding plans. I want everyone to know that WeddingMix exists because there's nothing like actually WATCHING the events of your big day unfold again to remind you of those deep, amazing, heartfelt feelings and experiences.

Jeff was wonderful to work with. My husband and I decided last minute that we really wanted to capture our big day on video, about 1-2 months before! I found my photographer successfully through thumbtack so I decided to try and find a videographer as well. And Jeff was the perfect fit! He went above and beyond what we even asked for, and all of our videos turned out perfect. We absolutely loved them all. There way of shooting our ceremony was very well done, honestly I only remember seeing his partner once, and not noticing the filming the rest of the time. They give you the privacy you want, yet still get awesome close up shots. I would highly recommend him!

Drake did an awesome job videotaping my daughter's wedding ceremony last weekend. He actually arrived almost an hour early to tape everyone arriving at the church, and stayed late to tape family and wedding party photos being taken. We now have priceless memories! We will highly recommend Drake to everyone we know who is looking for a professional, reliable and reasonably priced videographer. Thank you again, Drake!

I met Norvin Leeper last summer during a wedding where he worked as a Videographer and I was a photographer. From the conversations that we had I ask him to edit a behind the scenes video of me working as a wedding photographer. I had the footage and tried myself to put together a story but though I would give it to someone like Norvin to see what he could do with it. Wow just Wow. His rough cut blew me away. It was at that point that I realized how lucky I was to have stumbled on such a talented editor. He add music, motion graphics and gave it a polished look I would never have achieved even thought I had the very same editing programs he had. We went through three round of revisions where I was able to add my thought about my video. Norvin was very accommodating and was able to incorporate my ideas. Needless to say I'm delighted with my video. If you're looking for an editor, stop now; you found him and his name is Norvin.

I had the pleasure of working with Sarah for a Girl Scout Cookie-inspired recipe video. As a former Girl Scout, Sarah understood our mission and was enthusiastic about the project from the very beginning. She was a true professional from start to finish and very receptive to feedback. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an exceptional videographer in a heart beat!

We got photos and video, Steve showed us the work and we got to pick our favorite. I was a little worried we wouldn't get what we paid for at first, since my brother spent twice as much for his photographer and videographer, but I honestly liked our photos & video way better. We got everything faster than what Steve said it would take, so that very cool. Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
